A Guide to Snowboarding in Tignes

Ancient history tells us of a place where skiing was encouraged as soon as it was born. Way back in the 1920s the area welcomed the first pioneer skiers with open arms. The same warm welcome has been extended to Tignes Snowboarding enthusiasts ever since they started to appear in the mountains during the 80s.

Espace Killy offers endless opportunities to boarders, whatever kind of riding they are looking for.

Miles and miles of beautifully groomed piste is a carver's delight. You can carve all day without repeating a piste or hitting a mogul if you don't want to! The pistes are excellent for jibbing too, with kickers appearing off the sides of many pistes, the Palafour being one of the best examples.

If you want to push yourself in this direction it's the park you are headed for. Espace Killy actually has two!

The Val d'Is? park (easily accessible from both Val and Tignes) is a haven of kickers. From easy greens for everyone to try, right through to the awesome 17 metre black which is not for the fainthearted. There are also a good selection of rails and tabletops to hit here.

The Tignes park in Val Claret proudly boasts one of the biggest half-pipes in The World (comes with a health warning!) where you'll be able to join (or just admire) pros as they practice for their next comp. There is also another good selection of rolling kickers and rails here.

A boardercross track can be found on the Tignes side too, with rolling jumps, serviced by it's very own lift. Come here if you want to challenge your friends to a race, it's the perfect place!

If conditions are right Espace Killy can offer powder runs unequalled anywhere. Skiers have been coming here for so long because of this, and it is no different for snowboarders.

Running off the sides of the endless pistes is a great way to learn powder riding, and once you have a feel for that you can really start to explore. Easy open powder fields in Br??s and Boisses are the next step. In poor conditions the trees in both these villages also offer shelter and visibility to keep you enjoying the hill.

But on a clear blue day nothing beats throwing down some lines on an untracked run of powder far from the madding crowd. There are big off-piste runs from the highest parts of the resort, starting with steep narrow couloirs to get the blood pumping, running out into big snow-filled powder bowls then through trees to the bottom of the resort. Many such runs are reachable without even a walk, and the best such run starts and finishes in our beautiful little village.

The Vallon of the Sache has a piste high on one side, but off-piste riders can explore the full extent of this secluded valley which is a nature reserve. Classic riding, stunning scenery, rejoining the piste just a hundred metres above Br??s.... you can spend an hour coming down this one and still be back in time for lunch on one of the sun terraces of Brev's restaurants.

So whether you are coming to try boarding for the very first time, or you are an accomplished boarder looking for fresh runs or park practice, Espace Killy really does have it all.

Skiers and boarders alike should only venture off-piste in the right conditions, with the correct equipment, knowing how to use it. If you don't know where you're going then don't go. Never follow someone else's track. Ride off-piste at your own risk.

Zilker Park in Austin

During Austin's warm spring and summer months, Zilker park puts on a wide array of activities for the entire family to enjoy.

Every year in March, the Zilker Kite Festival is held, bringing thousands of spectators with almost an equal number of kites, to the park. In 2008, the Zilker Kite Festival celebrated its 80th anniversary. The Exchange Club of Austin began the Zilker Kite Festival in 1929 as a way to promote creativity among Austin's children. Today, while promoting family time, the Exchange Club of Austin also raises money through t-shirts sales and concessions as a fundraising measure to split among charities preventing child abuse and dolling out college scholarships.

The Zilker Kite Festival is free to the public, and anyone can join in the kite competition, which has a variety of categories like highest flying, most unusual, and strongest pulling. The only stipulation is the kite must be handmade. For those without kite making abilities, bringing a premade kite is acceptable, but one can also learn to make a kite at the kite making workshop.

Built on a sloping hill across from Barton Springs pool is the Beverly S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theater. Since 1959, Broadway musicals have been entertaining Austinites on warm summer nights, and the Zilker Summer Musical is now the longest running outdoor "pay-what-you-want" production in the U.S. Run by Zilker Theater Productions, the Zilker Summer Musical brings in about 40,000 audience members every year. The organization also hosts performances by the Austin Symphony and the Austin Civic Orchestra on their hillside theater, where spectators can spread out blankets, bring a picnic, and enjoy the show while being surrounded by 100 year old pecan trees.

The 4th of July will bring over 100,000 spectators to the park who will find a spot for their family along the shores of Lady Bird Lake. The Austin Symphony Orchestra, which plans and produces the entire event, will set up and play from the new Long Center for the Performing Arts. The orchestra runs through a variety of patriotic songs, and during the 1812 Overture, cannon shots punctuate the music, and cue the fireworks to begin.

Blues on the Green is held at the huge outcropping of rock in the middle of Zilker park known as Rock Island. Another free event, Blues on the Green brings local acts to Austin's music loving crowd, with genres ranging from pop to bluegrass, and country to blues (obviously).

Across the park from the Rock Island is the Zilker Botanical Garden. At the end of March, the Garden put on their 51st Annual Zilker Garden Festival. The festival brings in over 100 vendors from around the area selling a wide variety of plants, herbs, and garden related items. The Garden Council, which is made of 39 different clubs, runs the garden and recently teamed up with ACL Festival promoters C3, who brought in 12 different musical acts to entertain the garden shoppers. Throughout the summer months, the Zilker Botanical Garden will host many other events and seminars such as the Cactus and Succulent show, and Basics on How to Build a Pond.

Though Austin in the summer can be a taxing time to be outside, Zilker park has several reasons to get out and enjoy its wide open spaces.

Feral hogs normal weigh on average 110 to 130 pounds however, Texas has been know to produce hogs exceeding 400 pound. Hogs can be found in virtually every county in Texas and are prized by hunters and hated by landowners.

6. The Central Flyway - The Central Flyway is one of the four major flyway routes in the country that migrating birds use to migrate North to South and back each year. No one knows exactly how many birds use this route to migrate but it is safe to say that millions of birds fly this route every year. With the Central Flyway running through Texas, bird hunting and water fowling is one of the top hunting sports in Texas.

7. 1,135,245 acres of public hunting land - While Texas is home to hundreds of private hunting ranches, there is still over 1 million acres of public hunting land available. Smith Mountain Lake Lakeside Living: History, Natural Design and Community

IGFA: The World Authority for Recreational Fishing

The most prominent authority on angling is the International Game Fish Association, also called IGFA. They also keep the most up-to-date world records for fishing catches, depending on the category of fish. IGFA usually institutes stringent rules to ensure fair play among angling enthusiasts. For these hobbyists, it is a great honor to be listed in IGFA's annual publication: The World Record Game Fishes. This publication also publishes tips for fishing. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive identification guide for fish. The IGFA is also passionate about conservation of aquatic resources, and they enlist the help of biologists worldwide for conservation efforts.

IGFA believes that game fishes, food fishes, and their habitats are assets to the world that should be conserved and used widely. They also believe that angling is an important activity that contributes knowledge to the public about sporting and practices geared toward conservation. Their objectives and projects have not changed for many years, but they have been brought to the attention of a much larger audience of angling enthusiasts.

This association also has records for fly fishing, saltwater, and freshwater catches, to name a few. To maintain the credibility of these records, a set of regulations regarding equipment and fishing practices are constantly created and updated. This helps for establishing uniform guidelines to govern world record catches, tournaments, and other activities.

The IGFA has a museum that showcases fishes that have earned world records over the years. Walking through the museum will give you a feeling of being underwater. Suspended overhead are over 170 species of game fish, together with the date they were caught, where they were caught, and the angler who caught them. The largest exhibit was a great white shark caught by Alfred Dean in Australia in 1959. It weighs 2,664 pounds.

To address the need for a repository of literature about angling, the E.K. Harry Library was constructed. It houses a comprehensive collection of films, art, artifacts, and photographs about angling, game fish, and other subjects that maybe of interest to hobbyists.

As part of conservation efforts, IGFA engages in continuous research and supported scientific tagging of species, as well as other programs designed to collect data. They work closely with biologists concerned with fishery to respond to the particular needs of conservation.

Before enacting or implementing laws regarding fishing, the IGFA is often consulted. The association also ensures fair representation for the angler in decisions that have something to do with managing the populations of game fish all over the world, among other issues that have an impact on recreational fishing.

IGFA began in 1939 as a response to the need for a universal code of ethics for anglers. In the late 1930s, the British Tunny Club was the first to institute an association of marine anglers worldwide, but it was discontinued because of the war. At around the same time, Micheal Lerner, Dr. William King Gregory, and Clive Firth heard about the British Tunny Club's plans, thought it was a great idea, and solicited support from companies, fishing clubs, and outstanding anglers. Finally, in June 7, 1939, IGFA held its first meeting in the American Museum of Natural History. Later on, IGFA president E.K. Harry proposed opening the association to individual membership ensure that funds that flow into the association is continuous. Finally, record-keeping rights were turned over in 1978 by a magazine called Field & Stream. Thus, the IGFA as the world knows today was born.

Swiss Art Outdoors

Lucerne is a beautiful city steeped in history and rich is Swiss culture. It is also where Switzerland began as a nation 700 years ago. The old town centre offers 15th century buildings with ornately painted facades, watched over by the towers of the city walls.

Our walking tour of the old town commences at the northern bank of the Reuss River, just in front of the two covered bridges, Spreuerbrucke and Kapellbrucke. Look upwards as you cross the bridges and you'll discover wonderful pictorial panels under their roofs.

On the Spruerbrucke or Mill Bridge, Kaspar Meglinger's 17th century plague paintings titled 'Dance of Death' are extraordinary. The Kappellbrucke or Chapel Bridge commonly appears in photographs of Lucerne and was originally constructed in 1333. It too has a series of paintings inside that depict historic events in Lucerne, but sadly some of these artworks were destroyed by fire in 1993, although fortunately the bridge was quickly restored.

We then walk along the river's edge. This water is so clear and clean and the Lake Lucerne catchment area is home to swans, ducks and an array of other bird life.

Next down past the Rathaus (town hall) and on to the cathedral of St Leodegar with its gothic-like spires. Arriving early on a weekday morning it's likely to be closed, but we can still enjoy discovering the intricately sculpted figurines that frame the main archway.

The main highlight for me is the Lion Monument, situated northeast of Lowenplatz. The Danish sculptor Thorvaldson is attributed with designing the monument to commemorate the 700 Swiss soldiers killed in Paris on 10 August, 1792. After the French revolutionaries stormed the Royal Palace (now the Louvre), the Swiss Guards were ordered to lay down their weapons by Louis XVI and were massacred. The sculpture depicts a dying beast draped over his Swiss-marked shield with a broken spear sticking out of his flank. This poignant piece was carved out of a cliff face in 1821 and is a fitting place to end our 1.5 hour walking tour.

From here, you can visit the Gletschergarten, where giant glacier potholes illustrate that 20 million years ago Lucerne was a subtropical palm beach. The Alpineum opposite the glacier garden is a relic from a bygone age with models of alpine scenes behind glass.

The Bourbaki Panorama is situated on Lowenplatz itself. The panorama is home to a mural depicting the retreat of the French Eastern Army under General Bourbaki into Switzerland during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Or, if you would like to get out and explore Lake Lucerne, head down to the boat jetties in front of Banhofplatz and enjoy a 2.5 hour cruise. I chose a second class ticket on the Brunnen for CHF24. Each vessel has its own dining car, lounges and viewing decks. A great way to spend a cool but sunny afternoon in Lucerne.

Learning to dive in Croatia

I really couldnt wait for my diving holiday and was counting down the days. It seemed to take so long but when the day finally came i just couldnt contain myself. My flight was with EasyJet and left Gatwick nice and early the morning. We flew to Split in Croatia and was greeted with the beautiful aroma of clean air, olives and vineyards found only in the Mediterranean. From split it was a sort ferry journey to Vela Luka, the base of Gorgonia Diving, where we was meet at the port by Tihana, one of the owners of Gorgonia Diving. Vela Luka has a beautiful and peaceful charm, one that i haven't experience anywhere else on my travels. We were taken the hotel 'Vala' where we meet the rest of the diving team and our instructor for the next few days, Steve.

The following few days were full of learning new things and having a great laugh with the guys at the centre. We practiced diving skills in front of the hotel in the shallow waters of Vela Luka. And then we went with the other divers on the diving boat. The 9m RIB (as i was told) was huge and had so much space for us beginners to use, we could hardly notice there were 11 of us in the boat! At first i was a little nervous as this was going to be my first 'real' dive, but along every step of the way we were under the watchful eye of our instructor and the other members of the team. The dive was fantastic, it was called the 'Blue Hole' and i would recommend it to every to ask for this dive when to you go to Gorgonia Diving. In fact all of the dive sites were fantastic, and we were told by other divers at the centre that the sites were the best diving on korcula island! On our last dive we were granted a fantastic surprise. Steve came over to us all and shoke our hands, he then reached into his pocket and handed us our certification cards.

I would reccommend visiting Croatia to everyone, and especially diving with Gorgonia Diving. The diving in Croatia is terribly under rated and it is truely as the Mediterranean once was!

They may have a simple repertoire of noises and body language, but the intelligence with which these signals are used and interpreted makes a big difference.

Chimps make use of simple gestures, waving their hand in the direction they want another chimp to look or holding out a begging hand for support then relying on the intelligence of the other animal to sum up the situation and react.

Some chimps even develop their own special signals. These observations indicate that chimps are the most intelligent communicators in the animal world, even compared to other highly social species such as lions, wolves and monkeys. This level of communication comes from chimps' deep understanding of the social world around them, which means that each chimp must be able mentally model the impact of its own actions on the group as well as being able to guess the intentions of others.

This exact model was enhanced with a reverse gear and new drive chain for added durability in 1984.

From 1980s onwards, Honda ATVs are used for racing everywhere from desert roads to frozen lakes all over America. Since Honda has been renowned for its high-performance vehicles that are fit for racing, their ATVs are no different.

After the success of three-wheel utility and sports ATV models, Honda as well as other manufacturers of all-terrain vehicles discontinued the production of three-wheel ATVs. They released a better version in four-wheel, allowing better suspension and a more powerful engine.

If your child has just turned two he or she will probably think that they are completely independent now. A good way to encourage them and to plan some fun in the park is to buy them a backpack.

It is important to choose the correct back pack for your toddler or you may find that you end up carrying it! Firstly the backpack must not be too long. You do not want to have the backpack pulling down or getting in the way on the slide (you may find that your child is not always willing to take off their new back pack once you get to the park!).

Secondly it is important that you cannot fit too much in their back pack. There will be days when your toddler will want to take their entire car or doll collection out with them, if the back pack is fairly small then they will realize that not everything will fit into it - and hence will learn to limit their park toys.

Keeping it practical is an important part of everything to do with a toddler. You can guarantee that your toddler will want to carry their own picnic snacks - so make sure that your toddlers backpack is easy to clean. It needs to be lined so you can just wipe out the inside. It is also probably a good idea to avoid the fabric outer layered ones as these get wet and waterlogged, and the mud sticks firmly to them.

Now comes the really difficult choice - what should your toddlers backpack have on it? Well, be warned that if you go for a recognized children's character such as Noddy or Spiderman there is the chance that you child will decide that they no longer like this character and then they will want a new backpack! If you choose something more general such as a fireman bag, or a bag which is quite plain and you can pretend it is whatever you want it to be; one day it can be Dora the Explorers bag, the next day it can be Diego's backpack; it can be a doctors bag, whatever you child thinks of, you can pretend it is.

Finally you need to make sure that you don't end up carrying your toddler's bag. Toddlers learn all the time from copying, so the more respect you give an item the more respect your child will give it. It might be a fun idea to give your toddler an old mobile phone which is no longer in use (remember to take out the battery for safety), and a key ring with an old key on it. Then when you are leaving home you can run through a check list; my bag, my keys, my phone; your bag, your keys, your phone. By doing this together he will see how important your bag is and will hopefully place a similar importance on his own bag.

Now you are ready to head out together. If you are going on a long bus or train journey, I found it useful to sometimes hide a little present in the bottom of the bag, so just when it is all getting boring and the other passengers are starting to stare, you can get your toddler to delve into their bag and find a special treat - if this is wrapped up, it will take up even more of the journey while they open it!

Apollo Bay - Seaside Spectacle

The scenic delights of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria are well known to campervan travellers who traverse its length in droves, taking in the stunning ocean views, weird geological formations and thick forest. Over hills, along steep cliffs, through rainforest and next to beaches- the road passes through an immense variety of landscapes in a relatively short distance, stunning first time visitors and temporarily satisfying the yearnings of those who return again and again. Many people unfortunately do not take the time to truly appreciate this part of the world- they feel they have got enough out of the Great Ocean Road itself. Truth is they are missing out on a lot- the small coastal towns they drive through harbour rich cultures, and there are attractions large and small lying just off the road that justify a few days stopover in various places.

One such place is the cosy hamlet of Apollo Bay, which lies on cape Otway about 190 kilometres from central Melbourne. Extremely popular amongst the city folk as a weekend getaway, Apollo Bay is one of the key towns on this stretch of coastline and its population of 1700 people depend largely on tourism and fishing to support themselves. Known by many as 'Paradise by the Sea', Apollo Bay is built on a perfect semi circle beach with pristine white sands and azure blue water which helps justify this label. The laid back attitude of its locals, the excellent tourist facilities and its proximity to the rugged Otway Ranges go a long way to justifying its sobriquet, as you will no doubt discover if you visit there.

The fishing industry in the town dates back over a century, and the large fleet of commercial boats moored in the harbour have become something of a tourist attraction. Its a pleasant morning spent wandering through the wharves looking at the boats, followed up by a lunch in one of the seaside cafes. My suggestion- try the seafood, because it doesnt get any fresher than this! If you fancy taking some of the seafood home with you, visit the fishermans co-op on the wharf, where you can buy fish literally straight off the boats. If you would rather catch the fish than eat them, then look into the charters available that will take you out to sea. Alternatively you can cast a line from the shore along with many other keen anglers.

The hinterland of Apollo Bay matches the shoreline for sheer grandiose beauty. The Otway Ranges are a stones throw away, and these rugged ranges are a naturalists delight. Thick forest covers the spectacular mountain scenery and is home to a myriad of birds and animals that cause no end of delight and entertainment to bushwalkers. Protected by the expansive Great Otway National Park, these mountains are renowned for their waterfalls. The most popular would be Triplet Falls, which has become a visitor icon here and should definitely be on your 'to do' list. Set amongst tall ferns and towering blackwood trees, there are boardwalks here that take you deep into the forest and to the base of the falls. Another popular waterfall is Stevensons Falls, which is reached via a lengthy walking track which has some stunning views.

Back in town, you will find a strong tradition of arts and crafts is prevalent in Apollo Bay. This is epitomised by the Apollo Bay Music Festival which is held every March, and attracts performers and attendees from all over the globe. There are also plenty of galleries displaying work from local artists, who gain inspiration from the beautiful surrounding landscapes and the tranquil setting of Apollo Bay. Much of their inspiration comes from the sea, and this is particularly evident in the 24 large sculptures built on the foreshore of the town. Every Saturday morning a market opens up on the foreshore where you can purchase crafts and local produce from the region. Its a great spot to hunt down a bargain and support the local economy as well.

An established tourist resort, Apollo Bay has a large range of accommodation options so you will find a caravan park for your campervan easily enough. From here there are numerous touring opportunities you could take, obviously the most common is to continue on down the Great Ocean Road to Port Campbell and the Twelve Apostles. Numerous drives into the Otways will take you past some stunning views and landscapes, and day trips to the waterfalls there come highly recommended. Whichever way you go from here, no doubt you will be thankful for your refreshing and relaxing time spent in beautiful Apollo Bay.

Stay fit and cycle the Tissington Trail in the heart of Britain

Just over year ago, after a heavy New Year's Eve session, a group of us decided it was time to get fit and lose a bit of weight (same as last year and the year before I hear you cry) but this time we actually did something about it. The men arranged to meet every Saturday morning to cycle for a couple of hours. The wives agreed to meet in the afternoons and walk for a couple of hours cross country using the footpaths. And, with a few exceptions, we all stuck to it; most of us and most of the time anyway. We are blessed with a number of fairly easy rides and plenty of good footpaths in this neck of the woods so the incentive to ride or walk through the lovely countryside around us helped to keep the experience a pleasurable one (well almost pleasurable) and we went out whatever the weather.

The first few outings the men made seemed a big challenge (anything up to four miles or so). Remember it was still winter when we started and pretty cold. Within a couple of months though they were seeking longer routes and in time, a distance of 15 miles in a morning was quite normal. They even started to take on routes that were not so easy (with steep hills!)

In January this year, to mark the success of a year's exercising, both groups planned a trip into the Derbyshire Dales to cycle (both the men and the women) along the Tissington Trail. This old railway line starts in Ashbourne and climbs gradually till you reach Dowlow, some 17 miles away and quite high in the Derbyshire Dales. Initially, the girls were going to walk it and the men cycle but it seemed silly to do it separately and so we all agreed to ride.

It isn't a difficult ride. The gradient is almost un-noticeable most of the time and there is always the thought that it will be down hill all the way back. Fortunately, the seven old station buildings are still there and four of these: Mapleton Lane, Tissington, Hartinton and Parsley Hay (what a lovely name for a station), have been opened as places where refreshments and food can be purchased. These were very welcome stoppage places, where we had a chance to regroup, catch our breath and have a cuppa and a natter.

The old track has been surfaced and is ideal for walking and cycling and for long periods runs along the ridge of the hills with spectacular views across the Derbyshire Dales on either side. All the fields and the path are lined with dry stone walls and the farm buildings are built of the same grey weathered stone, covered in lichens and mosses. Towards the top, as you get nearer to Parsley Hay, the track runs through a steep cutting and under a very tall arched bridge, and on our journey through this stretch, the wind came directly at us but after that the track sloped down till you reached the point where the Tissington trail and the High Peak Trail meet just before Parsley Hay.

By the time we got there, we were ready for lunch and the food place there served a mean Steak and Stilton pie with a cup of coffee and sticky cakes. Seemed like the best food in the World at that point. There is also a shop there that sells clothing and cycle parts.

Having rested, we cycled on up the trail for another four miles to Dowlow where the trail ends. That last mile up a fairly steep incline seemed like real torture. It was worth it though. After a group photo shoot, we coasted back for almost two miles without having to peddle. The return journey was much easier than the trip up with the incline mostly in our favour once we had climbed back up from Parsley Hay but even so, I think we were all a bit saddle sore and glad to see the end of the line at Ashbourne after a 35 mile round trip. A great day out, good company, lots of laughs and already planning our next trip (Rutland Water).

The basic knife blade in these tools can be helpful to scratch trees and branches in order to mark an unfamiliar trail should you get lost. Consider packing mosquito repellent and sun block when hiking these forest trails as well.

Coastal Hiking

The Pacific Northwest is known for its unpredictable and sometimes treacherous coastal weather. Hikers are advised to dress for the elements when hiking along coast range trails. A rain jacket and sturdy, waterproof boots are essential. The Oregon or SW Washington coast is are often overtaken by dense, heavy fog coverage. These fogs can come in without warning, stranding and disorientating hikers who are unprepared. It is important to bring a powerful LED flashlight or lantern when hiking this area to illuminate the trail or campsite as well as alert help should you need it.

Cave Hiking

Cave hiking is one of the more dangerous forms of recreational hiking. This activity requires specific safety equipment and long-term planning. Along with multiple light sources, appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water, one must also make sure to bring protective head gear, rope, and climbing gloves. Experts recommend headlamps when cave hiking to allow for hands-free hiking. If considering cave hiking in the Northwest, contact a professional in the area who can provide specific equipment needs and precautions.

The weather in Argentina varies from subtropical to winter cold; it depends in what part of the country you are. It's hard to speak generally about the weather in Argentina because it's different in different parts of the state. But I will try to inform you about the weather you can expect in different time of the year.

The important thing to remember is that Argentina is placed in the Southern Hemisphere which means that the seasons are inversed (when the winter is in the US, in Argentina is summer). The weather there can be very tricky and rapidly changing, especially in the parts that are close to the Andes. The weather there is really unpredictable so you should be careful cause the rainfall and floods are often and extreme heat or even snow are not rare either.

Mostly Argentina is really nice country with nice weather but there are parts that you may avoid. The south is very cold and winters can be brutal there so you should be careful. There is no need to go far south (unless you want to for some reason) because most of the hotels and attractions are closed.

Of course, the seasons with most attractions are summer and winter. Especially nice is Patagonia. It is very mild during the year with many attractions, but it can also be very unpredictable and it can change drastically without notice.

Few things you should try to remember is that the seasons are reversed which means that the summer lasts from December-March and the winter lasts from June-July. If you are looking for the most enjoyable weather that you should absolutely come in March, April, September, October and November.

Crowds in Argentina

Unfortunately the crowd is hard to avoid, unless you want to go in the low season. Yes, the high season and in the time of holidays the crowd is unavoidable. So, if you don't like crowds than don't go during the summer, winter or holidays. Or if you must try to stay somewhere out of town.

The best time to save money

Like every other country Argentina too has parts of the year that are more or less crowded and more or less expensive. If you would like to save money than try to avoid high season (Dec-Feb and Jul-Aug). Also, try not coming in Argentina during the holiday cause prices goes up. If you want to enjoy in your vacation for a lower price than I recommend you to come during the low season (September, April and June). Don't worry; weather is good during the low season too.

DAY 4 & 5 - MAASAI MARA
Two full days experiencing the Mara magic in the Kenya's premier reserve that is an extension of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The Mara reserve is the most popular in Kenya and it owes this to the astounding concentration of game within the park all the year round with the Wildebeest migration mainly in July and August. A visit to the Maasai village can be arranged at an extra cost on request. Overnight as above.

DAY 6 - NAIROBI
We break camp and drive to Narok where Maasai souvenirs can be bought, then back to Nairobi by late afternoon.

The Kings Canyon: Outback Royalty

The centre of Australia is dominated by millions of square kilometres of sunbaked red earth, punctuated irregularly by geological features that vary in their degree of spectacle from interesting to completely mind blowing. Modern tourists seem to be on a quest for seclusion- as the world gets smaller and smaller we are running out of places to escape the 'madding crowd', so we are broadening the scope of destinations we visit. As a result deserts are seeing a surge in the number of annual visitors, as no where else can really offer the isolation and the wide open spaces of a desert. Various spots in the Australian Red centre have benefited from this shift in trends, and one such spot is the Watarrka National Park in the Northern Territory, home to the majestic Kings Canyon.

When in the Alice Springs region a campervan tour to Kings Canyon is a novel way to get out on the road and see some amazing scenery. 350 kilometres south west of Alice, Watarrka National Park lies on the Western Side of the George Gill Ranges, and is characterised by high sided gorges and mountainous rocky landscapes, all showing the same red hue that is seen across most of the outback. As an important conservation area the Park is home to over 600 species of flora and fauna, many of them very rare, and all of them adapted to the desert environment in weird and wonderful ways - think jumping snakes, bearded dragons and thorny lizards!

The main feature of the Park is Kings canyon. At its deepest point it reaches some 270 metres in depth, and its high walls provide protection for the forests of palms and cycads that flourish on its walls and floor. The area has a rich and interesting Aboriginal history, and has been home to the Luritja people for more than 20 000 years. Westerners are relative newcomers to its charms, with the first white man to discover it being Ernest Giles in 1872. Today it is one of the most visited areas in the Northern Territory, and caters towards thousands of visitors a month. There is a visitors centre about 20 kilometres away from the gorge, and although this isnt always manned it provides a good introduction to the history, culture and attractions of the region.

The best way to see Kings Canyon is to take one of the walking trails into the canyon, past the best viewing points and normally away from the crowds. A short and easy walk leads into the centre of Kings Canyon, and is suitable for kids or anyone with mobility difficulties. Theres is a longer one (6 kilometres), which takes about three hours to complete and goes along the canyon rim. From various points on this one you can see such attractions as The 'Lost City', which is a series of beehive like rock formations that look like an ancient ruins. Another is the Garden of Eden, a deliciously cool valley with serene waterholes surrounded by lush vegetation.

The Kings Canyon has a little sister too, it lies nearby and is known as Kathleen Gorge. This gorge has a spring fed waterhole at its head known as Kathleen Springs, which are popular amongst bushwalkers looking to cool off after a hot day in the sun. There are a number of bushwalks here that are suitable for children, and there is even one that joins up with Kings Canyon. This should only be attempted by the very fit, and rangers must be notified about your walk before you set out. Many people choose to overnight on this walk, as it is a long distance to cover in a single day.

Being such an isolated spot, accommodation out here is fairly limited. Kings Creek Station is a camel and cattle ranch that has a large and shady campsite where you can park up your motorhome with the other campers. There are also safari like lodgings for travellers who arent into the camping thing! A restaurant and a swimming pool complete the creature comforts, and dont visit here without trying one of their infamous camel burgers!

Your journey to Kings Canyon can go through a number of places. You can include the East Macdonnell Ranges in it, then return to Alice via Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the West Macdonnell Ranges. Research is required here, and you will need to adjust your trip and where you go according to how long you have on your holiday. However long you take and whichever places you visit this holiday is likely to instill a deep affectation for desert environments in you, and be warned it is hard to get rid of. So I guess we'll be seeing you again next year!

Adventure tour to Chukotka

This survey trip grants an opportunity to see main features of Chukotka in one respectively short trip. You will see majestic tundra landscapes of plains and mountains. You will cruise along sea coasts and observe sea birds and mammals. You will visit national settlements and nomadic stands of aborigines: the Chukchi and the Eskimo and get to know their traditional lifestyle.

Itinerary

Day 0 (Thu). Departure from Moscow (E3-121, 19:30, DMD).
Day 1 (Fri). Arrival in Anadyr (12:50). Transfer to the city by minibus (car) and boat. Accommodation in hotel. City tour of Anadyr. (D)
Day 2. Acquaintance with Anadyr. VisitingChukotka Heritage Museum Center, Museum of Geology, Art Gallery. Free time. Overnight in hotel. (BLD)
Day 3. Trip to local tundra all day long with picnic and fishing. Overnight in hotel. (BLD)
Day 4 (Mon). Transfer to the airport. Flight to Provideniya (AD013, 10:30 - 12:00). Transfer to the settlement. Accommodation in a private small hotel (or home stay). Sightseeing tour of the settlement. Visit to museum of local lore. Folklore dancing performance of aborigines - Eskimo (Siberian Yupik) and Chukchi. Group briefing. Preparations for the trip. (LD).
Day 5. Ride (25 km) by 6WD coach / truck from Provideniya to the Yupik national settlement Novoe Chaplino. Acquaintance with the settlement. Visit to local house and lunch with aborigines. Further ride (12 km) to Inakhpack countryside. Passage by motor boat to Gylmimyl Lagoon (1 h). Good chances to observe grey whales, walruses, fur-seals (nerpas) and sea birds as pelagic cormorant (Phalacrocorax pelagicus), horned puffin ( Fratercula corniculata), pigeon guillemot (Cepphus columba) and others. Setting a base camp. Overnight in a hunting hut or in tents. (BLD)
Note: In case of worse weather conditions group waits at Inakhpack with accommodation in hunting hut.
Day 6. Sea round trip by boat: Inakhpack - Yttygran Island (20km) - Nynengen Island (9km) - Inakhpack. Visiting the sacral Eskimo place 'Whales Avenue'. Lunch - picnic. Boat based observation of the huge seashore colony of sea birds as guillemot, seagull, pelagic cormorant. Return to the base camp. Hiking. Swimming in hot springs . Possible fishing. Dinner with tasting of dishes cooked with salmon and/or sea mammals' meat, salmon soft caviar, tundra's berries, mushrooms etc. Overnight in hut or tents. (BLD)
Day 7. Sea round trip by boat to Arakamchechen Island (40 km) and back in direction to Kygynyn Cape (40km). En route, good chances to observe feeding grey whales, walruses and fur-seals (nerpas). Stopping at Kygynyn Cape with a small distance walking to a big rookery of walruses (usually 500-3000 animals). Photo and video shooting. Lunch - picnic. Passage by boat to Glazenap Bay to visit a memorial place from time of exploring of Chukotka. Return to the base camp. Free time. Overnight in hut or tents. (BLD)
Day 8. Sea passage along Senyavinsky Strait to the mouth of Penkigney Bay (15km). Observation of the largest Chukotka birds' rookery of horned puffins, pigeon guillemot and others at Merkinkan Island. Continue of sea trip to the national Chukchi settlement Yanrakynnot (12 km). Short time tour of the settlement. Dinner with tasting of local cuisine. Overnight in a local house. (BLD)
Day 9. Ride across tundra (50km) along Marich and Getlyaninvaam river valleys by special off-road caterpillar vehicle to a field base of Chukchi reindeer herders. Examination of traditional Chukchi dwellings - yarangas. Meeting with herders and exploring of local life style and their traditions. Lunch with traditional local dishes. Overnight in tents or yarangas. (BLD)
Day 10. Ride by caterpillar (around 10km) to a reindeer herd (around 1000-2000 animals). Photo and video shoot. Explore of herders' lifestyle. Drive (around 10 km) to Getlyanin hot springs. Rest and swimming. Possible fishing (fly and bait fishing) of salmon trout, chun salmon, eelpout and grayling. Dinner with fish soup. Overnight in tents or hut. (BLD)
