The Lowdown on Galapagos Diving

The Galapagos Islands are known for many things. The same natural wonders that made the Galapagos such an interesting place to study by pioneers like Darwin have also made it an interesting place to vacation. Outdoor enthusiasts from all corners of the world who are traveling on a variety of different budgets make the trek to these islands every year. Whether they find interest in the unique bird populations on land or the one-of-a-kind underwater environment, these travelers share in common a true interest in adventure travel.

For underwater adventurists, the Galapagos Islands provide a unique experience. Thriving reefs, marine life and some of the best underwater visibility (often 100 feet or more) on the planet help to give the Galapagos Islands a reputation as one of the seven underwater wonders of the world. This is partially due to the fact that around 70,000 square kilometers of Galapagos marine areas are considered to be protected and the islands are far enough out of the way to make the destruction of this environment less likely.

What you can expect from a Galapagos diving Trip
To begin with, the Galapagos Islands offer something for divers of all skill levels. That being said, the water conditions of many dive areas are much more appropriate for intermediate and advanced divers. For any diver, the Galapagos is sure to deliver a life changing experience.

Currents - Due to strong currents, most dives done in the Galapagos are drift dives. Throughout different seasons, the Humboldt and Panama currents affect dive conditions. Divers not experienced in drift diving may want to steer clear of the dives offered in current-heavy areas.

Water Depth - While there are plenty of dives which take place shallower water, many of the most impressive dive experiences are to be had at deeper depths around 70-100 feet and beyond.

Temperature - Thermoclines play a big role in diving in the Galapagos. Surface temperatures reach between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year. These temperatures can fluctuate as much as 5 degrees Celsius as you descend.

Marine Life - Expect to see abundant marine life on any dive in Galapagos. As this area has been protected from hunting for quite some time, various marine specie populations have grown tremendously. Sharks, rays, sea lions, whales, reef fish and much more are not uncommon sites. In fact, rare whale sharks are seen fairly regularly in some dive zones.

Safety
Travelling with an experience dive company is important. It's also important to make your level of dive experience clear to your dive guides. Many dive charters do provide on-board safety equipment so you should ask about that as well. Lastly, since 2001, a hyperbaric chamber has been available in the Galapagos in case of emergencies.

Whether you trek to the Galapagos on a live aboard dive charter or enjoy a luxury cruise through the islands, take at least a couple days to explore everything the Galapagos have to offer, under the surface. A dive opportunity like you'll find in the Galapagos would be a shame to miss and an experience to remember.

For the clothes, take with you what the season demands --- but make sure that it's fast-drying, light, and comfortable. For the backpacking footwear, it will depend on which area you'll be trekking and traversing, and in how much hiking you'll be doing --- you may need a sturdy pair of hiking boots or walking shoes. You may want to pack a good pair of sandals as well, since they are comfy and not really heavy in the bag. When one plans his checklist of the things needed for the trip, he must always bear in mind both the journey and the destination, so that he would know what backpacking footwear and clothes are really useful and practical to bring. Sometimes, when one thinks of trips, he will have the tendency to include things that may be too impractical to carry but he just feels like bringing it with him. What you have to remember first is the journey --- the most appropriate backpacking footwear would be sports sandals or good quality walking shoes if you plan on following a paved or smoothed trail, but if it's more of rugged terrain or rough area, then the most appropriate backpacking footwear would be a very sturdy hiking boots to keep you on your feet; and a good set of backpacking clothes for the journey would be a comfortable light shirt and a jacket if the weather requires it. Backpacking footwear and clothes are very important in these trips because this will be your first line of defense when you're out in the open fields. Your safety and protection from outside dangers like adverse weather, insects, plants, soil, water, etc., depend on the backpacking footwear and clothes you wear on that journey.

So, if you plan to embark on this kind of thrill and unpredictable excitement, then make sure you're ready with everything you need --- from your backpacking gears, backpacking clothes, backpacking footwear, etc.

Knapsacks of the most common but tough gear for backpacking trips

Boasting the best which define hiking and camping, two popular outdoor activities known throughout the world, backpacking trips are quite ideal avenues for fun for friends and family alike.

Backpacking trips differ from regular camping when talking about the total weight a backpacker would have to bring along with him/her, as a degree of hiking is involved with the outdoor activity. Quite understandably, backpacking trips require backpackers to travel light, bringing with them only essentials, if not ultralight gear designed for backpacking trips, like lightweight flashlights, lightweight portable stoves, and lightweight backpacks.

The first thing to consider when backpacking would be the type of pack one would bring. Osprey backpacking packs are among the most popularly known to be used for backpacking trips. Here are two of the considered best Osprey packs for backpacking trips.

The Osprey Atmos 35 Pack for Backpacking Trips

Weighing 1.16 kilograms, medium sized, the Osprey Atmos 35 allows backpackers to move faster, more comfortably. With the pack made lined with a thermoformed and perforated padding, it is truly an ideal pack for backpacking trips.

The Atmos 35 pack is built with a 210-denier broken twill nylon fabric, making it a durable backpack, and is designed with Osprey's AirSpeed suspension air system, affecting the overall comfort experienced in using it for backpacking trips.

As a pack for backpacking trips, the Osprey Atmos 35 successfully fits the bill defining backpacks for backpacking trips.

The Osprey Talon 44 Pack for Backpacking Trips

Not only limited for backpacking trips, the Osprey Talon 44 is made to carry up to 30 lbs worth of backpacking equipment, and is also used for adventure climbing trips, adventure racing and ultralight backpacking excursions.

With the pack's main fabric made of an amalgam of nylon and denier fabrics, Osprey's Talon 44 weighs 1.05 kilograms, medium size, and 1.11 kilograms, large size, making it a light backpack capable of serving most backpacking trips, with no compromise for a backpacker's comfort. Designed with an access area for sleeping bags, adjustable shoulder and hip holders, these and more functional features abound the Osprey Talon 44.

All in all, both Osprey packs are quite ideal for backpacking trips, in the sense that they are both functional backpacks, which truly shine once brought outdoors. With enough compartments to fit other backpacking gear types, the Talon 44 and Atmos 35 are superstars when it comes to packs for backpacking trips. A title rightfully earned, and justly deemed.

Buying Guide For Riflescopes

So, it's time to buy a new riflescope and you are getting ready to start shopping. If you haven't purchased a rifle scope in the last 10 years or so, you may be in for a surprise as things have changed quite a bit in the riflescope industry. When buying a scope these days, you need to know terms like field of view, parallax, and objective lens. These terms aren't all that complicated, but you'll be able to make an educated buying decision.

Before we get into the terminology, it's important to clearly define what type of shooting you will be doing as scopes these days can be very use specific. If you are doing long range shooting or varmint hunting, you'll need a scope designed for that use. If you are shooting a .22 for plinking or for fun, then you won't need a high power scope. Clearly identifying the type of shooting that you will be doing will make it much easier to choose the best scope for that purpose.

Let's get into common riflescope terminology:

Parallax - Parallax is a fancy term that basically describes a condition that occurs when the target image is not precisely focused due to misalignment of shooters eye on the reticle plane. The truth is, every riflescope has some degree of parallax, and it's more pronounced at longer distances. You can view parallax when shooting as it appears as apparent movement between the crosshairs and the target when a shooter moves their head and changes eye alignment in the scope. Many modern riflescopes have a built-in parallax adjustment that compensates for this condition based on the range to the target. If you are shooting beyond 100 yards, this is a nice feature to have.

Scope Magnification - This is also called the scope "power". There are two basic kinds of rifle scopes for sporting purposes, fixed power and variable power scopes. Fixed power scopes have a preset magnification power set by the manufacturer that can't be changed. A good example of a fixed power scope is a 4 X 32, which has a fixed 4 power magnification that magnifies an object up to 4 times larger than you could see with the naked eye. Variable power scopes possess an adjustable magnification that can be changed within a preset range. For example, a 3 X 9 X 40 would be a variable power scope where the power can be adjusted anywhere from 3X up to 9X by turning an adjustment ring. Most variable power scopes have the adjustment ring on the objective lens, but some of the new scope models have this adjustment on the side and are called side focus models.

Field of view - The field of view is commonly called the FOV, and it's the measure of how much area you can see through your scope at 100 yards. For example, a scope with a FOV of 30 would mean that at 100 yards you would be able to see 15 feet to the left and 15 feet to the right of the target.

Eye relief - The eye relief is a term used to describe the optimal distance between your eye and the scope, where you can see the scopes entire field of view. Typically, if you move your head forward and move underneath the eye relief distance, you won't be able to see the entire field of view. Most scopes have an eye relief between 2 and 4 inches, depending on the power of the scope. The higher power scopes tend to require a longer eye relief.

Objective lens - The objective lens is the lens in the front of the scope, and is usually measured in millimeters. The larger the size of the lens, the more light it will gather. In the case of objective lenses, bigger isn't always better as the larger objectives will be heavier and may require special rings or bases to mount to your weapon. Generally, an objective lens anywhere between 32mm to 44mm will be fine.

The beautiful of Koh Samui

Initially, the Koh Samui island was dwelled in by fishermen settlers for approximately 15 centuries back. They came from Southern China and Malay Peninsula. The term Samui is mysterious in particular. Probably this word is an addition to the name of a certain native tree called mui, or perhaps this is a version of the Chinese term Saboey which means "safe haven". Koh is a Thai term meaning "island".

Koh Samui is usually called Samui by the locals of Thailand. This island is located at the east coast Kra Isthmus of the country. It is the country's 3rd major island having a vicinity of 228.7 km as well as a population of more than 50,000. The island is prosperous with white sandy beaches, innate reserves, coconut trees and coral reefs.

The island only encounters 2 seasons similar to other areas of southern Thailand. Rainy season arrives during May until December, and dry season happens during January until April. Because the island has a tropical weather, every time there is rain, it pours heavily but not too long.

During the late twentieth century, the island was a remote independent district, having short association with the Thailand mainland. Koh Samui lack roads until early 1970s, and there is a 15km trip from a side of Samui going to the other side which included a whole-day trek via the mountainous central rain forests.

Previously, Koh Samui's economy centers on survival agriculture, fishing, and coconut as their main source of crop. Starting 1980s, tourism has made way to change their status and is prevailing nowadays. The establishment of steady, high speed internet connection has made this island a practical spot for IT businesses, which is now providing a certain level of economic assortment. With the island's weather and accessibility, this has made it really striking for international investors.

A private airport known as Koh Samui Airport is primarily constructed by the Bangkok Airways. Still it is the major operator and the sole airline that provides services to the island going to main Thailand. There are private speedboats that you can hire going back and forth of Koh Samui. Regular boats are linked to Koh Phang-gan and Surat Thani. At daytime there is a boat going to Koh Tao.

It was just in the early 1970s when the original visitors who rode a coconut boat came to Koh Samui. For many years the island only contains a small number of bungalows and a seep of tourists. During the early 1990s was when boats packed with travelers began to arrive at the island and that was when the island become well known. Today, Samui is the 2nd well-liked island destination of Thailand next to Phuket.

This island is a sanctuary of innate beauty, having nice white sand beaches, stunning corals, luscious lagoons, scenic waterfalls, crystal clear water and captivating coconut trees. Tourism is now the leading industry, than the previous one which is the coconut. The progress of Koh Samui is no w paying off. Beaches such as Lamai and Chaweng are congested. Though, there are still serene beaches around.

Towns For Your Crete Sightseeing

Planning out any Cretan holiday can be a challenging job due to the sheer number of available options. There are several towns of significance, each having an abundance of modern infrastructure, archeological richness and natural beauty. You can choose any of these towns for your Crete Sightseeing, depending on your personal choice. Among these towns is Heraklion, the capital and the largest city of Crete. The city accounts for roughly about 15% of all arrivals into Greece through its international airport and consists of a flourishing hotel industry to add comfort to your Crete sightseeing. Heraklion is also where the Minoan archeological site called the Knossos Palace stands.

Chania is the next town for Crete sightseeing after Heraklion. With an official population of around 70,000 in the greater Chania, this second largest city of Crete has several tourist attractions to look around for. The city is roughly divided into two major elements, viz. the old and the new towns. The old one sprawls around the harbor area and carries one of the best ancient settings for holiday making in Greece and elsewhere. The town used to be encircled by the old Venetian fortifications, some of which survive even today adding to your Crete sightseeing plans. If the old town had spas, cafes and other recreational facilities carved out of the old heritage buildings, the new one will surprise you with its modern setting.

One could choose from a number of archeological places in Chania to add to one's Crete sightseeing. Most of these places lie in Kasteli, Splantzia, Halidon street, at the harbor, in Topanas and the Jewish quarter. The combined tourist arrivals of the above two cities, i.e. Heraklion and Chania, form a decent percentage of the entire Greek tourism. Rethymno is another town, which could be added to one's Crete sightseeing flavors. The town has a population of roughly 40,000 and a past dating back to antiquity. The old part of Rethymno, built during the Venetian era, is among the best preserved sites of its kind in today's Crete.

Archeological remains have withstood the change of time, weather and man's interference in Rethymno, to continue being listed along the best Crete sightseeing locations. These included buildings and harbor from the Venetian period, and stoned staircases and arched doorways from the Hellenic-Roman and Byzantine era. The city has a Venetian castle named the Fortezza, which is one of the largest and most preserved of its kind in the whole of Crete. One more town for Crete sightseeing is Ierapetra in the eastern Crete. It holds a population of about 24,000 and is widely known for its Greek, Roman and Venetian lineages.

Agios Nikolaos is another Crete sightseeing location, which lies east to Heraklion and is widely known for its tourism potential. The town plays a regional hub for 20 odd villages and is well connected through Nikos Kazantzakis airport with the mainland Greece and the European cities. The city is widely believed to have been inhabited since the Bronze period. Crete sightseeing locations within Agios Nikolaos include, the Lake Voulismeni, the island Agioi Pantes, beaches along the coastal region, the local archaeological museum and one key flora exhibition "Iris".

Cretaquarium - A Crete Tours Destination

You can decide to visit several other places, apart from visiting the Greek heritage sites, while buying your Crete tours package. The Cretaquarium - Thalassocosmos complex, a state-of-the-art sea water aquarium is one such place among several others, which you could decide to add to you Crete tours itinerary. The aquarium works as a modern-day research, educational and entertainment facility for those seeking to learn about the Mediterranean sea-life. Researchers and holidaymakers are known to throng this place in good numbers throughout the year. Cretans are known to have been living alongside the ocean since the Minoan era, and it is fitting that a state-of-the-art aquarium should be added to your Crete tours plan.

The Cretaquarium - Thalassocosmos was opened in December 2005 at a former US army base in Gournes, Crete and it immediately became a key ingredient for the seekers of Crete tours. The aquarium, which has been funded under the EEA Financial Mechanism by Norway and part of 29 similar projects, has been able to draw more than 100,000 visitors by this time. Greek holidays have always had a fair bit of sea adventure attached with them, since most archeological sites are spread across several islands apart from the mainland Greece. Those who may decide to buy their share of Crete tours will also find themselves yachting and visiting the Cretaquarium - Thalassocosmos .

The aquarium is designed to have room for 300 visitors at any given period of time during your Crete tours, and could be visited throughout the year, including all public and religious holidays. Either your tour operator that might have sold you a Crete tours package or the local guide will help you reach out there. The Minoan Civilization, which is believed to have flourished across the Greek island of Crete, is known to have depended heavily on seafaring for its livelihood. According to some experts, the occurrence of the Thera volcanic eruption only a tad earlier before the Minoan Civilization fell apart, was the chief cause for its annihilation. Minoans heavily suffered in the area of sea trade due to this natural calamity, it is believed.

You could choose to see ancient wall painting, showcasing an inherent connection between the Minoans and aquatic life, while being on your Crete tours. The paintings will also show how seafaring the Minoans were, by depicting their action packed life style. While being inside the Cretaquarium, you could watch up to four thousand marine organisms through various methods. The aquarium is made to accommodate these organisms within specially designed and fabricated tanks, filled with an estimated amount of 1.6 million liters of seawater. Visitors can watch these species through glass and acrylic windows, while being on their Crete tours.

Some very small organisms, such as eggs and larva, are displayed through a large screen, which the visitors can decide to manipulate themselves. The aquarium, built over an area of 5000 m2, has several ingredients to add to your Crete tours. For example, you can sip coffee at two different places and spend time chatting at the central meeting point. More information could be garnered about the Cretaquarium - Thalassocosmos complex either online or through your Crete tours guide.

Ascending the Canopy

It's something you've always considered, but feared too much to explore. And now, so many years later, you find yourself amid Costa Rica's verdant forests, among fervent friends all harnessed up, each one donning a helmet, a sweat-laden t-shirt and an ear-to-ear grin. You ponder, "Am I really prepared to do this?" You're 30-years old, relatively inactive, and prefer surfing the internet to the soaring canopies of Central America. And yet here you are, straddling a wooden plank from a staggering vantage point, overlooking one beautiful, exotic, and teeming tropical forest. You're friends, all agog, nosedive into the lush, green labyrinth without fear or hesitation. You, on the contrary, are frozen in your tracks. It's all so surreal, if not unreal altogether.

A compassionate tour guide takes your hand, sensing your mushrooming panic. You must look pathetic: a middle-aged man cowering beneath some silly, fluorescent orange helmet, on the brink of mental breakdown and/or urination. But you smile, and yield to his mollifying grasp; you take a moment to absorb the overpowering beauty around you as well as the fortune afforded you; you jump off the diving board, and then you soar.

The forest's canopy zips by you in sudden, emerald flashes. You cascade graciously down the zip-line, suddenly elated, intoxicated by the incredible height and magnificence of the rain forest summit. You release a resounding holler of thrill and exaltation, one that rivals the canopy's high-pitched twitters and reverberating calls. You spot a squirrel monkey leaping to a higher limb; a sloth dwelling languidly among the foliage; and a plethora of birds climbing the sky.

When you descend the horizontal traverse and prolific Costa Rican canopy, you feel yourself a changed man. Exhilarated, rejuvenated, you giggle much like the 8-year old girl in your periphery. You high-five companions and shake hands with the Canopy tour guide, who is clearly satisfied by your euphoric demeanor. You can leave Costa Rica with pride and accomplishment, having toured and soared among the canopies.

Arenal Adventures in Costa Rica

When visiting a country like Costa Rica, one rich in idyllic white-and-black sandy beaches, lush rain forests, and a profusion of active volcanoes, it's imperative that tourists seize any and every opportunity to explore the versatile landscape. For those privileged enough to visit the enchanting country, and even more so the region of Guanacaste, there's one spot in particular that will undeniably rouse awe and wonder, humility and apprehension: Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica's most renowned and active volcano.

Among the plethora of volcanoes that dot Costa Rica's varied terrain, Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica's most highly-regarded and frequently visited. It doesn't take much to discover why; as one of the world's top 10 most active volcanoes, Arenal Volcano offers recurrent, explosive performances, as the incendiary volcano spews plumes of smoke, ash, and florescent red lava from its voluminous crater.

For Costa Rica, Arenal Volcano has become an emblem of sorts, the towering stratovolcano a symbol of the country's beauty, diversity, and ecological prowess. Lunging up from the earth at a staggering 1,670 meters, the Arenal Volcano continues to mesmerize eco-tourists, who travel the world over to witness the volcano's tantalizing, colorful eruptions.

For adventurous itinerants in pursuit of a majestic destination, Arenal Volcano is definitely a mesmerizing attraction, its omnipotent presence taking dominion over Costa Rica's lush, tropical landscape. For optimum views, however, the powerful Arenal should be observed in the evening, as clouds often obstruct full, day time panaromas. Fortunate guests will view Arenal Volcano in a most spectacular form: stirred from slumber, shooting glowing lava against a deep, night sky.

Experiencing Puerto Rican Flora at Montoso Gardens

90 acres of botanical gardens await discerning Puerto Rican tourists, many of whom visit the expansive Montoso Gardens in Puerto Rico to unearth a colorful inventory of over 600 species of flowers, plants, fruits, nuts, and spices. The garden, an elusive jewel poised along the staggering Pico Montoso Mountain, overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea, has elicited eco-tourists and horticulturists alike from even the world's most remote crevices.

The allure of the Montoso Gardens, aside from its fascinating location (wedged between soaring mountains at an altitude of 1500 feet), boils down to the garden's multifaceted landscape: Montoso houses not only a colorful botanical garden, but also a comprehensive nursery and tropical and flower fruit farm. As such, Montoso Gardens is a sanctuary for those in pursuit of the tropic's diverse assemblage of flora.

Adjacent to the 5,000-acre Maricao State Forest, this former coffee plantation was created in 1987 by Bryan Brunner, a devout tropical horticulturalist who, after coming to Puerto Rico to teach graduate horticulture courses, decided to remain permanently and commit himself to conservation and tropical ecotourism.

Visiting Montoso Gardens entails a world of tropical opportunity, and for $5 donation, Montoso guests can absorb the garden's natural beauty through breathtaking hikes and scenic mountain vistas which provide a canvas for photographers of all skill levels. Visitors will admire the orange birds of paradise and fluorescent pink gingers that blanket the garden's surface; sample cinnamon, pili nuts, or several others in its whopping 258 fruit, nut, and spice collection; and wander among delicate flowers as they linger gracefully among the mountainous terrain.

Camping and Outdoor Activities at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, Texas

No matter what time of the year it is, people are always looking for new camping and outdoor activities to partake in. This is especially true if they live in a colder climate and they want to experience warmer weather for a while.

Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, Texas is open as early as March and as late as October. This leaves plenty of time for people with Spring Fever or Fall Blues to get away.

It is one of the places where people can experience outdoor fun during certain off-season months of the year. This park offers more options than other campgrounds and outdoor facilities do during the spring and fall months. Of course, guests are welcome during the summer months, too.

In addition, people can experience holiday fun that takes place in this area. Lynn Creek Park is home to the annual "Prairie Lights" which takes place from Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve every year.

Lynn Creek Camping and Outdoor Activities

People who come to Lynn Creek in Grand Prairie, Texas often enjoy outdoor fun such as swimming at the beach, scheduling a barbeque picnic, play at the "SS Prairie Dog Mega-Playground (open 2007)," or participating in team sports. This park offers activities for both adult and children.

If the children would rather not swim, they can play on the massive playground nearby. Likewise, if couples would rather relax on the sandy beach than spend time in the water, that is their prerogative.

It is all about making this camping and outdoors trip what each traveler needs and wants. For example, Lynn Creek Park also includes a boat ramp area for those who participate in various water sports.

Some of these boating facilities are located at the nearby Joe Pool Lake area. Boats can also be docked at certain spots along the coastal areas of Cedar Hill State Park and Lloyd Park.

One of the pavilions used for barbeque picnics and other outside parties provide enough space for up to a couple of dozen people. One pavilion offers room for six picnic tables total while the other allows for up to eight picnic tables.

The "SS Prairie Dog Mega-Playground" and nearby area includes the following facilities: multiple steep-sloped children's slides, picnic areas, bathhouses, and shade structures.

Team sports played at Lynn Creek Park include volleyball, which takes place on a sandy court; and soccer, baseball, and basketball, which takes place in the grassy areas. Children, families, and large groups will never be unoccupied on this trip.

"Prairie Lights" Display

Quite a variety of camping and outdoor activity takes place within Grand Prairie, Texas parks. However, this area is also known for its "Prairie Lights" display.

This attraction consists of up to 3 million lights displayed. More than 100,000 visitors attend this spectacular Christmas and holiday lighting event, which takes place every single year.

Exterior Home Improvement

From twinkling candles glimpsed through a window to trees and shrubs decked in brightly colored strands, light can be the warmest welcome for your guests during the holidays. And if you've been thinking about enhancing the lighting above and around your front porch or door, the holidays are a great time to put that thought into action.

"People spend more time than ever before in the outdoor spaces of their homes," says Rick Seidman, president and chief executive officer of Quoizel Inc. of Goose Creek, S.C. "The front and back entry areas have become living spaces frequented by friends and family. This has led to consumers wanting to decorate and light these areas with the same importance as the inside of their home."

Attractive exterior lighting not only enhances your enjoyment of your home, it adds curb appeal and value, and can welcome guests with a feeling of warmth and security all year round. Good lighting is especially important during the holidays, when more guests will be coming to your door, the experts agree.

Homeowners thinking about upgrading their exterior lighting should keep some basics in mind, including scale, style, visibility and planning.

"Frequently, you see homes with outdoor lanterns that aren't large enough for the home or the area it's lighting," says Rick Wiedemer, Jr., certified lighting consultant and president of Hinkley Lighting in Cleveland. "When choosing a lantern to hang above your door, consider viewing your home's entry from the curb or coming up the driveway as a guest would."

A good rule of thumb for choosing a right-sized lantern is to pick one that is at least a third the size of the door, says Mark Rottner, president of Artistic Lighting and Designs in Norcross, Ga. "That means if your door is 7 feet high, your lantern should be 27 to 30 inches long," he says. "If you decide to go with a lantern on either side of the door, then each should be about 25 percent of the door's height."

Appropriately sized lanterns not only provide ample illumination for the area you're trying to light, they also impart elegance to a fa?e, says Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for the American Lighting Association (ALA) and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky's School of Interior Design. "They really are a show of confidence."

The style of the lighting is also important, the experts agree. The style of your outdoor lighting should match both the design of your home's exterior and the lighting design inside the house.

"Lighting should be selected to accentuate the architecture, not detract from the beauty of the structure," says Jeffrey R. Dross, senior product manager with Kichler Lighting in Cleveland. What's more, he adds, "it's important the entryway lighting has a relation with driveway lights, landscape lighting, deck lighting and the rest of the lighting on your home. You want to avoid the 'flea market' approach where all the pieces are different."

If your home is colonial, Victorian, traditional, craftsman or contemporary, be sure to look for lighting that pairs well with the architectural style. For example, if the exterior color palette is warm, then brown or bronze light fixtures may be more appropriate, Dross points out.

Don't be afraid to incorporate some trends into your exterior lighting design. Some hot exterior lighting trends include the addition of crystals to different style fixtures, and - for upscale homes - natural gas lanterns in copper or brass. Layering several types of lighting at an entry is also popular, Wiedemer says. For example, if your door has an overhang, you may place recessed lighting in the overhang, paired with decorative lanterns on either side of the door and path lighting leading up to the door, he says.

"There's more variety than ever in outdoor lighting," Rey-Barreau says. "Pluralism is the trend."

Homeowners looking to temporarily enhance their outdoor lighting for the holidays have a host of options as well. Rottner likes the idea of putting exterior lights on a dimmer to create a warm, comforting mood. Wiedemer recommends adding low-voltage landscape lighting, which is easy to install and can be moved or added on to in the future.

Attractive outdoor lighting can be a great way to welcome your guests at the holidays, the experts agree. "A warm glow by your front door indicates your personality, and the personality of your home," Rottner says.

An Extra Pair of Socks - 10 Essential Backpacker Items for Your Own Safety

Beginner backpacker safety is imperative for every novice to know while planning for that first exciting backpacker trip. What are the ten essential pieces of equipment every backpacker should carry to assure a safe trip?

1. Sturdy leather hiking boots, waterproofed prior to trip, and worn on several long hikes prior to trip This is essential for comfort and safety. Should you develop a large blister or two on the trail you might not be able to return under your own power. It is essential that your boots already be worn by you and have conformed to the shape of your foot. Get your blisters done and out of the way on a few shorter, local hikes. Waterproof the boots and waterproof them again before the big trip. Keeping your feet dry is of utmost importance for backpacker safety. Everything depends on your feet!

2. Waterproof tent that you have practiced setting up before the trip There are so many suitable backpacker tents on the market today that which one you choose is not as important as learning how to quickly set it up prior to your trip. You don't know what weather conditions await you at the end of the first day on the trail, and if it is cold and rainy you will be plenty grateful to know how to quickly set up your shelter.

3. Waterproof frame pack with ample shoulder and belt padding. If the pack is not waterproof then invest in a waterproof pack cover. Your whole trip would be ruined if all your supplies got rainsoaked on the first day. It is essential that your sleeping bag remain dry regardless of how much rain you might have to trudge through.

4. Goretex or silk inner layer for cold, rainy climate is essential for keeping body heat in where it is needed. Some people prefer silk because it breathes better than goretex type materials. If your inner layer doesn't allow air flow, you will become wet from the inside out.

5. Backpacker stove that you know how to use - it doesn't matter what brand, all that matters is that you know how to use it. If the stove is new be sure it works and that you can light it easily. Now think about wind and how you would light that stove on a real windy day. If the stove is old be sure all parts are working and that it has been cleaned recently. Backpacker stoves are famous for getting clogged and not working on the trip, so be sure your stove is clean.

6. More stove fuel than you think you will need is worth the extra weight. Should one of your group become injured, you might be spending an extra day on the trail, and it is essential you have a working stove for the extra unplanned day.

7. Enough dehydrated food for entire trip, plus extra should you have an unplanned additional day due to one of your group becoming ill or dehydrated or injured. You might also encounter another backpacker group with an injured member and could offer some of your extra food to them.

8. Sleeping bag rated beyond climate conditions but not too much beyond. If your sleeping bag is TOO good, you will end up perspiring all night and end up getting cold from being wet. If your sleeping bag is not warm enough you could suffer from being too cold. Neither extreme is desired and both are avoidable. Do your research and know what the likely temperatures will be for the elevations at which you will be setting up camp each night.

9. More socks than you think you will need. Your whole trip depends on warm, dry, comfortable feet. You will be glad you packed extra pair of socks or two. Perhaps your boots aren't as waterproof as you thought, and that little slip into the water as you crossed the creek soaked your socks. You didn't expect that, and you will be glad to have that extra pair of dry socks.

10. First aid kit large enough for the size of group you are backpacking with. Think worst case scenario and plan accordingly. This is another item that is worth its weight in the pack. There is no such thing as a first aid kit that was too big for the trip. But plenty of first aid kits are too small for your group. Choose accordingly. Split up the first aid supplies among all members of the group or else take turns carrying the complete kit, switching off at lunch or the start of each day.

Following these basic rules of backpacker equipment safety can mean an enjoyable, safe trip for every novice backpacker.

Best Binoculars - The Best Binoculars According to the Consumers Who Use Them

Finding the right pair of binoculars can be quite difficult if you don't know what to look for. Every manufacturer out there markets their products to be the best so you can't rely on advertising alone. It is a good idea to look at the independent reviews that consumers are posting online about the various binoculars they have bought. Since they aren't working for the manufacturer they won't be trying to persuade you, they will simply be giving their unbiased opinion of how it is working out for them.

One of the best pairs of binoculars when it comes to independent reviews online is the Monarch model by Nikon. It offers many great features and accessories. Everything about this model of binoculars fits the definition of quality. The lenses they feature are just as good as those found on many other brands that cost twice as much.

They also feature a very solid frame making them durable and long lasting. You can use them for a 330 foot view and 19.6 mm of eye relief. It is very easy to understand why consumers are so happy with both the quality and the price of the Nikon Monarch.

For those who want the top of the line when it comes to binoculars, the Zeiss Victory is getting the very best consumer reviews. They are pricey though with a price tag of approximately $1,500. For that price though you also get a lifetime warranty so you won't have to worry about buying a new pair of them in the future.

They are impressive though and have a long list of features you will really enjoy. They offer a crystal clear view and they are also very comfortable to use. They can be used most anywhere because they are waterproof and fog proof.

If you are looking for a compact pair of binoculars consider the Pentax Papilios. They are very light with a weight of only 10.2 ounces. You can pack them in your purse or even for a long hiking trip. They compact to a very small size of only 2.2 inches so you can easily fit them in your pocket. One of the drawbacks though is the tend to fog up easily if the weather conditions are right. They are a good buy for the price though.

Thousands Of American Coca Cola Bottles That Are Without A Trade Mark

During World War11 American troops were based in the tropical islands of Vanuatu, (New Hebrides). They left behind thousands of pieces of broken 'No Trade-Mark Coca Cola bottles.' In her tropical garden, the well known artist, Faith Hodder, has created an interesting a 'no trade mark' Coca Cola corner.

Around 100,000 American troops arrived on Santo, one of the largest tropical islands in Vanuatu. On the main island Efate, another 25, 000 troops were also based. The American troops had the task of halting the forward move of the Japanese down through the chain of the islands of the South Pacific.

The remains of an American World War11 downed aircraft is till visible outside the Aero Club at Port Vila. "Shortly after the pilot had dropped wrapped lollies from a cockpit to some village children, the American aircraft crashed into a tree," says Wallace Andre, 74 year old witness to the accident.

With several bottles being drunk per person per day, the consumption of Coca Cola quickly outstripped the supply, being consumed every day. In an effort to meet this, the Americans shipped empty bottles out to Vanuatu, where they were filled were kept supplied from the Vanuatu factory. However, for some unknown reason, the majority of the bottles however, had no trademark. This has left the island of Vanuatu with the unique phenomenon of thousands of pieces of no trademark Coca Cola bottles.

Just as quickly as the Americans appeared, they suddenly disappeared. The Coca Cola factory also disappeared with the troops. There were aborted attempts at trying to burn some of the thousands of Coca Cola bottles.

Vanuatu is the 'Must See' travel adventure destination of the South Pacific, Coca cola.
