What to Wear and Bring to Camp

If your child is attending camp this summer, you may have questions about what he or she should wear and bring. In fact, this is one of the number one questions parents ask the camp director when signing up for camp.

The answer depends on several things, including the type of camp you are sending your child to, any special needs or requirements your child may have, and any rules or regulations the camp goes by or recommends.

In general, if your child is attending day camp (where he or she will attend camp during the day but return home each afternoon), your "packing list" will be much less involved than if your child is attending resident (overnight or sleepaway) camp where they may be living for several weeks at a time.

If your child is going to day camp, then in general, your son or daughter may need a backpack filled with basic supplies such as a swimsuit, towel, lunch and a change of clothes.

But for a resident camp experience, your camper's packing list will be much more involved. They may require suitcases or duffel bags, pillows, toiletries and other living supplies.

What if your child has special medical requirements? For example, many kids take medicine while they're at camp. So if this pertains to your child, be sure to alert the camp director beforehand and send any medications to camp with your child in the original prescription container with a written note describing how and when the medication should be administered along with any other important instructions.

When your child goes to camp, there is a lot to think about and remember. Knowing what to send with your child is an important part of the camp experience. Any camp you choose should provide you with a written checklist of what to wear and bring so you don't forget anything.

Keep the above information in mind and you'll be fine!

What Is A Possibles Pouch?

In the early 1800's this Possibles Pouch was just a flat rectangular bag with a flap which had to be carried under the arm or packed into the saddle bag. As things progressed Mountain Men or Fur Trappers fitted a strap so the bag could be carried over the shoulder. These bags would contain pipe tobacco, medicine and other essential items that these men may need to use on their outings into the wilds.

Various Possibles Pouches were created by the Native Indian Women for carrying a variety of items. These Possibles Pouches would come in several sizes and would be decorated in beads with a strap.

The Possibles Pouch has evolved into something which is quite different from the early days because now they come fitted with belt loops and are carried on the belt. Primarily these have been adopted by the Bushcraft Fraternity because of the need and requirement to carry extra items to aid their survival in the wilds.

Some of the items carried in the Possibles Pouch are First Aid Kit, Fire Making Kit, Cutting Tools and Cordage.

This list is endless and each person have their own specific items that they would carry in these Possibles Pouches. Normally these bags are constructed in leather either by Wet Forming or using the the Box Wall Construction method and are stitched together with Linen Thread for the more authentic look.

The use of Linen Thread does have it's drawbacks as the stitching will rot in time especially if the Possibles Pouch constantly gets wet. Modern threads such as Tiger Thread are more widely used because this is a man made fibre and will not rot over time. Another material to use is Artificial Sinew which is made up of several strands and these are split down to be used to stitch the Possibles Pouch together and again this does not rot.

Closures for the Possibles Pouch again vary from toggles made from Antler or Buffalo Horn to Brass Sam Brown Studs through to Buckles or a simple leather Thong which passes through holes to keep the flap closed and the item inside dry.

Benefits of Aloha Vacations

Hawaii is one of the most beautiful states of the United States America in the central Pacific Ocean comprising the Hawaiian Islands. The Hawaiian Islands historically known as the Sandwich Islands were included in the U.S. territory in 1900.Tourists to this place can stay at any of the innumerable hotels there but those with budget restrictions can opt for Hawaii apartment rentals.

These apartment rentals have several advantages over hotel rooms. Short-term apartment rentals are meant especially to cater to travelers. These apartments are fully furnished and will give you a certain amount of independence, especially in cooking your favorite meals, which is not possible in hotel rooms.

Renting an apartment in Hawaii allows you the comfort of a private residence. There is no checking in with the front desk, no one telling you that you can't have guests in your apartment, and no hawkers standing outside our apartment trying to sell souvenirs like they do in front of hotels. If you cook, you have a full kitchen and are able to buy your own food at a local market instead of paying high hotel prices for meals.

Hawaii is considered one of the best vacation destinations in the world. Tourists coming here must be not willing to settle for anything less than the best when it comes to accommodation. The best art of Hawaiian vacation rentals is that they are everywhere you will want to be during your Hawaiian vacation. So whether you are looking for the lap of luxury, the fast and furious good time, or the romantic hideaway, your wish and dream vacation can come true.

These vacation rentals have several benefits. These are:

1) Privacy is the biggest benefit that you get at Hawaii vacation rentals. You will defiantly enjoy the complete privacy.

2) During your stay in these vacation rentals you will sure get homely comforts. Not only this, you will get all essential amenities inside these accommodations that are necessary to make your stay comfortable and joyful.

3) Hawaii vacation rentals offer you much more space than hotel rooms. These are ideal places to stay if you are planning a vacation with your family. Every member of family will get enough room to move around. This is sharp contrast to hotel rooms where you feel cramped for space.

Finally, there are many other advantages also of staying at Hawaii vacation rentals during your holiday trip. However, it is not possible to narrate every one here. The best way is to experience yourself by hiring one whenever you go on a vacation next time.

Top Five Cruise Destinations to Escape the Cold Winter Weather

What better way to escape those cold weather doldrums than a relaxing cruise to a warm destination. Cruises offer all the amenities of home, and many more. The all inclusive nature of a cruise vacation makes it easy to relax and put the thought of cold weather and work behind you.

Choosing a destination to escape those cold weather blues can be a fun challenge. There are many options for warm weather cruising. Some may choose the more exotic routes such as the Panama Canal, Australia and New Zealand, or even the Nile River. Others may choose the allure of the Mediterranean and the French Riviera. Still some prefer the South Pacific or the Mexican Riviera.

All of those destinations have a lot to offer, but the five destinations below are the top five for the warm weather seeker.

Multi-Destination Caribbean Cruise

This is by far one of the most popular cruise choices. The Islands of the Caribbean have so much to offer. They are as diverse as they are similar. The sandy beaches, blue waters, and lush jungles entice many visitors to jump ship at each port and explore the many offerings.

These cruises range from a 3 day excursion to 10 day island-hopping expeditions. Some cruises focus on only a couple of islands, while others make a swing around the entire area. On board the ship you can enjoy the entertainment and meals, while resting up for the day trips to the islands. Scuba, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, or simply exploring villages and mountain trails, are all examples of some of the adventures that await you on the islands.

While it is impossible to experience all the Caribbean has to offer in one multi-destination cruise, it does allow the traveler the opportunity to sample a little of each culture. This smorgasbord of experiences opens new opportunities for future vacation planning.

Barbados

While we are still in the Caribbean, Barbados is a superb destination. With nearly constant 80 degree temperatures, soft sand beaches, cool blue waters, and lush vegetation, this is a vacationer's paradise; a relaxing cruise to the island makes it even more enjoyable.

Barbados offers a rich cultural history coupled with many modern amenities. Friendly, laid back people also make this a choice destination. Throw in some great water recreation, posh resorts, and a hopping nightlife and Barbados becomes an even better choice.

Hawaii

Although not well known as a cruise destination, Hawaii has always been a warm weather destination for travelers. The problem for most vacationers was choosing which island to spend their vacation on. A cruise through the islands eliminates that choice. You get to experience them all.

You could choose a cruise that started in Honolulu and then hop to each island for a great cultural and entertaining vacation. The time aboard ship could be used to rest up between visits to the islands. This is a great way to experience all the islands have to offer in a short amount of time.

For those who enjoy the on-ship part of the cruise the best, there are cruises that depart Mexico or British Columbia and float across the pacific for a very relaxing trip. These are much longer excursions. The onboard time can be spent enjoying all the amenities the ship has to offer before embarking on the many island adventures.

Aruba

Another Caribbean destination, Aruba, is well known for its nightlife. Aruba has often been called the Caribbean's answer to Las Vegas, with its many lavish casinos and upscale resorts. This island relies on tourism to keep it going, with over fifty percent of its gross national product coming from tourism. That explains why the people are so open and friendly.

The trade winds help keep the temperatures down from the extremes, but the arid, dry climate promises plenty of beach weather. Days spent on the beach and in the warm waters, coupled with nights spent enjoying the resorts and casinos equals fun and relaxation. A low crime rate just adds to the air of relaxation.

U.S. Virgin Islands

This popular string of islands is a hotspot for cruise ship tourism. St. Thomas is the port of choice for shoppers. There are many other attractions and beautiful beaches, as well. Many cruise ships focus their trip on St. Thomas alone, and the passengers are not disappointed. However, the other islands cannot be ignored.

St. John is not a common cruise ship destination, but it is an easy ferry trip from St. Thomas. St. John offers a great look at the nature and history of the islands. And, if it is history you are looking for St. Croix is the destination of choice. It is rich in history with many historical attractions. And Water Island, although not on the cruise ship docket, is a short ferry ride from St. Thomas and offers a relaxing taste of paradise. With less than 200 residents it is an unspoiled gem in the chain of islands.

The English Lake District - A Walkers Guide to Helvellyn

One of the more popular goals for the walker in the English Lake District is the windblown summit of Helvellyn, England's third highest peak. Situated in the eastern side of Lakeland between Thirlmere and Ullswater, the mountain has easy access with several wide paths leading to the summit. Here I shall outline the main routes of ascent and their relative merits.

From the A 591 about three quarters of a mile north of Grasmere an easy but steep path climbs grassy slopes to Grisedale Hause the pass leading over to Patterdale and Ullswater. Just beyond the summit of the pass, the track skirts around the right side of Grisedale Tarn before another path branches off to the left. The main path continues to Patterdale - a pleasant walk in itself but the left branch climbs a steep and loose slope in a series of zig zags to the summit of Dollywaggon Pike - yes the Lake District is full of curious names. Beyond Dollywaggon Pike the route heads northwards along a wide ridge which appears more like a plateau with an escarpment of cliffs falling down to the east. This is wonderful walking country as the way progresses over Nethermost Pike before the final easy rise to Helvellyn with its stone shelter at 3118 feet or 950 metres.

If we go about 3 miles further along the A 591 towards Keswick, another popular route leaves from Wythburn Church by Thirlmere - there is a car park on the right (as you head north). The Wythburn route is shorter and more direct but it is steep throughout most of its early stages. The path is good and joins the Grasmere route just before the summit. At under 5 miles return, the wythburn route is the shortest way to the summit of Helvellyn.

From the eastern side of the mountain the approaches are more interesting with views of the crags and rocky ridges that make up this aspect. From the beautiful village of Glenridding by the shores of Ullswater, a single track road leads up a valley to the Youth Hostel and site of an old mine - the road is for access only and you should park in the village. From the mine buildings the track climbs up out of the trees to a wide valley which it follows for perhaps just over a mile where a path heads up the slopes to the right. This path climbs steadily to the ridge between the summits of Raise and White Side.

The ridge is now followed in a more or less southerly direction over the broad grassy top of White Side and steeply up to the minor summit of Helvellyn Lower Man - itself a great viewpoint for the valley below. From here it is a short walk to Helvellyn's main summit. This route is an easy and very pleasant outing with some spectacular views and is a good choice if you would rather avoid the crowds that you can encounter on some of the more popular routes.

I have left the best until last here and the popularity of this next route is the only thing that is wrong with it. Striding Edge is a name that most walkers visiting the Lake District will be familiar with. Those who plan to it will think of the name with apprehension and those that have done it - with fondness.

From Patterdale just under a mile south of Glenridding another single track road leads off to the start of the path over Grisedale Hause mentioned in the first route. There is parking about half a mile along this road where a path leaves the route to Grasmere and climbs the steep slopes of Birkhouse Moor to the north of Grisedale. There are views up the fabulous Grisedale valley to the crags of Nethermost Pike at its head and the precipitous St Sunday Crag opposite while you ascend the path to the start of Striding Edge itself.

Striding Edge is the ridge to the south of Red Tarn which is visible after the initial ascent but the path is clear and there will usually be people to follow! Crossing the Edge is an exhilarating walk along a rock ridge with Grisedale below on the left and Red Tarn on the right. While there are a few exposed sections it is not difficult and you are able to walk rather than scramble your way along most of it. At the end where the route leaves the ridge and climbs up to Helvellyn there is a short scramble up about 20 feet of easy rock and then you're up.

The ridge to the north side of Red Tarn linking Helvellyn with the shapely peak of Catstycam is called Swirral Edge and makes a good route of descent taking you back to the Start of Striding Edge. The slightly easier Swirral Edge also makes a good route of ascent but it is easier to go up via Striding Edge rather than to descend it if you're doing a circular. This route should be avoided if it is icy or very windy but is safe in the mist - there's no problem route finding and you can't see the drops if it's foggy!

So there's a choice of a few ways up Helvellyn - generally the paths from the Ullswater side offer pleasanter hikes but whichever route you use, have a good day in the hills.

Lyme Disease - Can It Do More Than Just Tick You Off When You Travel On Vacation?

Travelers, campers, tourists and vacationers alike can be at risk for getting Lyme disease, a serious, debilitating condition caused by being bitten by an infected tick.

What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?

Some of the symptoms of Lyme disease are the classic bull's-eye red rash, fatigue or loss of energy, feeling sleepy, tingling and numbness, swollen and painful joints, memory loss, and feeling like you are getting the flu. Paralysis of the face is a less common symptom.

Lyme disease can make your life miserable and cause you a lot of pain and suffering if it's not diagnosed and treated right away. The longer you wait before seeing a health professional allows this disease to progress quickly and it may not be possible to lessen it's effects.

How is Lyme disease spread?

Ticks bite and feed on animals such as mice, other small rodents, and deer. If any of these animals are carrying the Lyme disease bacteria, they can pass the bacteria on to the ticks. When people are bitten by an infected tick they may contract Lyme disease.

How can you reduce the chance of getting Lyme disease?

Some people do not have symptoms that show right away so prevention is always the best policy. If you are traveling in the spring and summer months to or through areas where deer, mice, other rodents and animals live, the following are some things you can do.

If you are camping on vacation or holidays, you can limit the number of ticks around your campsite by reducing the brush and leaves debris. Wear light colored clothing so you can more easily see these very tiny black insects and remove them before they attach to your skin. Be sure you wear long-sleeved shirts and tuck them into your pants. Also tuck your pant cuffs into your socks. It is also a good idea to wear rubber boots as ticks are usually found close to the ground. However, you can also get them in your hair if you brush against leaves on a low tree branch. Wearing a light-colored, wide-brimmed hat may help. Be sure to check your skin and scalp carefully as ticks can easily be overlooked, especially in your hair. Applying a DEET containing insect repellent to your clothes and exposed skin, as well as applying the insecticide permethrin to your clothes will also help.

How can you remove ticks safely?

Ticks that have burrowed and embedded themselves under your skin can be removed with small-tipped tweezers. Make sure that you do not leave any part of the tick under your skin. Once the tick has been completely removed, disinfect the wound thoroughly with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Keep in mind that you are not totally out of the woods yet, so to speak, as the symptoms can take several days, even weeks before they show. Using tweezers is the best and safest method for removing ticks. Do not try to remove any ticks using burnt matches, petroleum jelly, or alcohol as this will cause the ticks to release more of the bacteria into your blood stream.

Please note that at the present time there is no vaccine available for Lyme disease.

According to the Center For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) this bacterial disease is vastly under reported, perhaps by well over 100,000 cases per year in the U.S. alone. You can go to their website at cdc.gov for more information on Lyme disease.

Can Serious Danger Lurk Under The Sun On Your Tropical Vacation?

Even though these sun related problems, sunburn, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, are not diseases, they can be very serious and could put a real damper on your holidays. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when dealing with the sun. Keep in mind that the sun's rays are more intense between noon and three p.m. in the tropics and at high altitudes, even if it's a cloudy or overcast day.

What can you do to prevent getting a sunburn when you travel to sunny holiday destinations?

In general, the fairer or lighter your skin is, the easier you may sunburn. Even clouds offer little or no protection from a severe sunburn. So why take a chance of ruining your holiday when getting a painful sunburn is easy to protect against? To prevent getting a bad sunburn, especially if you sunburn easily, use a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30, or stronger if possible. Use the sunscreen liberally, wear a wide-brimmed sun hat, choose UVA and UVB protection certified sunglasses, and wear a long-sleeved shirt and slacks. Try to stay out of the sun between noon and three in the afternoon. Build up your exposure to the sun gradually, day by day. Limit the length of time that you spend in the sun to about fifteen minutes the first day, and increase your time in the sun gradually on subsequent days.

What can you do to treat a severe sunburn?

You can ease the pain of a sunburn by soaking in a cool bath three to four times a day. If you add some baking soda to each bath, it will help even more. Cool showers will probably hurt too much, and they are not as effective or soothing as cool, relaxing baths. To help with headaches, or pain and swelling, take aspirin or other pain medication such as Advil or Ibuprofen. Do not take any aspirin based pain medications if you are on blood thinners or have an ulcer. If you are not sure if it's safe for you to take these pain relievers, check with a doctor or medical clinic. To avoid dehydration, drink at least six to eight glasses of water per day. Do not break any blisters if you can help it. Broken blisters can easily get infected, especially in the humid weather of the tropics. If they do break, wash them gently with soap and warm water.

If your sunburn does not appear to be getting better and you still have pain after a couple of days, you develop a high temperature or fever, have a splitting headache that won't go away, are vomiting or have diarrhea, feel dizzy or confused, or your eyes hurt and light bothers them, you must seek medical attention immediately.

What can you do to prevent heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is completely preventable. Wearing a wide-brimmed sunhat, drinking lots of liquids, and staying out of intense heat and humidity will help you avoid this serious problem.

What should you do if you have the symptoms of heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is caused by a combination of very high temperatures and humidity. This may result in the loss of fluids from your body through excess sweating. These fluids must be quickly replaced or heat exhaustion can result.

The symptoms include headache, fatigue, lethargy, giddiness, and muscle cramps. The treatment is to immediately move out of the sun or heat and drink plenty of liquids, preferably commercial beverages containing electrolytes, such as Gatorade. Do not drink any alcohol as this will make your condition worse.

If you do not feel better and show positive signs of recovery within a very short period of time, have someone help you get to a hospital immediately as your condition could easily progress into a true medical emergency called heatstroke.

What actions must you immediately take if you get heat stroke?

When heat exhaustion is not successfully treated immediately, it can result in a very serious medical emergency. Heatstroke is characterized by high body temperatures of 102 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit, or 39 to 41 degrees Centigrade. There is also a cessation of sweating. The symptoms of heatstroke include flushed, red skin, headache and confusion which can progress into delirium and convulsions, and can be fatal.

Note: Someone must help you by quickly taking you out of the sun or heat and rushing you to a hospital immediately.

Don't Get Caught in the Rain - A Cautionary Tale

Can a camping tent survive Hurricane Cheddarwurst? Here's a funny story for you... Last year, my friends and I found ourselves at Sunset State Beach in California. The campground is called Sunset because it arguably has the best sunsets over the pacific ocean, in all of California.

We arrive at around noon and immediately set up shop. This involved unpacking the car, assembling our tents, and immediately having a beer. All of our tents were pretty standard with the dome shape, poles, and water proof covers. Well, almost all of them. One of our friends lacked the basic tent, and decided to design a makeshift tent with a giant blue tarp and some bungee cords. It actually looked pretty decent.

When we checked in, the Park Ranger gave us a weather report with a slight chance of rain and his added opinion that there wouldn't be any. We enjoyed most of the day with a few beers, a walk down to the beach, a few beers, roasting hot dogs, a few beers, eating Cheddarwurst (which our new tent architect decided to bring), chatting by the fireside, and a few more beers. As the sun went down so did our eyes and we retired to our tents shortly thereafter.

It must have been about five hours later that I awoke in a puddle of water from a hurricane that had decided to blow in. Okay, so it wasn't really a hurricane, but it sure seemed like on at the time. As I unzipped my tent and peered out in the pitch black, all I could make out a giant blue tarp flapping in the wind like a sail that lost its wind. Not wanting to bear the cold and more wet, I attempted to get some more sleep but simply ended up laying there until dawn.

When everyone rose in the morning, we noticed that our tent designer fled the scene of the storm, leaving only a drenched blue tarp. Their car was gone and we all laughed and gave them an A for effort.

The moral to the story is to be prepared with a decent tent. Even though our friend didn't have a tent to begin with, my tent failed the test too. It's best to do your research on what tent will work for you.

P.S. My personal opinion is to invest in a good water proof tent.

Decorative Outdoor Gas Fireplaces

The latest trend in the newer homes is an outdoor fireplace. This is an amenity that the homeowners are considering to make their outdoor living space more fun and useful, all the year round. Many people like to sit and relax in their backyards, after a day full of frantic work. However, the air becomes chilly at night and in the absence of a suitable outdoor gas fireplace, it is tough to sit outdoors. But thanks to outdoor fireplaces, you can now enjoy your outdoor space!

For constructing a fireplace, you need to keep particular things in mind. It is prestigious to carefully choose the correct point or location for building an outdoor fireplace. For safety reasons, make sure that your fireplace is as far away as possible from your plants, home and other structures that can be burnt.

It is easier to purchase pre-fabricated fireplaces that have been built with safety in mind. But if you are self-assured enough to build it from scratch, then textiles can be brought from any home improvement store as well as those specializing in garden or outdoor materials.

Another idea would be to create a sophisticated outdoor retreat, complete with palm trees and patios- with the fireplace being the main attraction of the design. On the other side you can even buy smaller, less costly models that not only increase the liveliness of the outdoors and don't even burn a whole in your pocket. For example, Pacific Products offers portable outdoor fireplace that can be easily transported on camping trips or simply to your backyard deck.

Outdoor gas fireplaces are now becoming relatively common in all households. With proper decoration and styling, these outdoor gas fireplaces can become the center point of attraction in your backyard or garden!

Vacations Only Available Through a Travel Agency

Going on vacation is what many individuals spend their entire year dreaming about. For some a simple vacation means visiting family and friends, but for others a vacation means getting away to a destination that is exotic, fun and exciting. Maybe you desire an extreme adventurous holiday or maybe you in search of peace and serenity, whatever your holiday idea is, travel agencies have the tools and expertise to help you find a perfect destination.

Why Use A Travel Agency?

There are many people who feel that it is not necessary to make use of a travel agency. From flight arrangements to booking accommodations, there are several aspects of planning a vacation that many individuals feel are simple. A common question is: Why spend money having someone plan a vacation for when you can do it yourself? This may be true in some instances; however, there are many benefits to using a travel agency.

Remember, making travel arrangements and vacation plans can be a very stressful experience. Having to phone dozens of places and speaking to many front desk operators can be frustrating. You might think that this does not sound so bad, but setting aside enough time to do the appropriate amount of research can be difficult with a full time job, not to mention a family as well. A scenario such as this can lead to plenty of stress, or worse, a slip up with the vacation plan itself. Hotels, airlines and tourist attractions may be overlooked. The best options are sometimes not advertised. A seasoned travel professional (i.e. a travel agency) most likely will be better suited to provide you will the best options available, whether they are advertised or not. Yes, working with a travel agency costs money, but the service provided can relieve you of many hassles and save you time too.

Inside Tips

The biggest advantage of travel agents is that they work constantly with hotels, resorts and other individuals in the travel industry. This means that you can be sure the arrangements your travel agency chooses fit your budget and your lifestyle. In addition, because travel agencies deal with vacations on a daily basis, they will also be able to inform you about the hottest destinations. You will not only receive the advantage of knowing what places are great to visit, travel agencies might also be able to give you great packages that will save you money.

What Services Do Travel Agencies Offer

When it comes to travel agencies, many people think that they offer a money wasting service. This is false; you get what you pay for and it relieves you of travel anxiety. The rule that everything will and must go wrong is no longer your concern

Travel agents will advise you on the best locations there are and try to arrange a discounted package for you, which, if you were picking your own location, you would not be able to get.

They also take care of all flight and traveling arrangements. They will book your flights both locally and internationally and confirm it just before you leave for vacation. For instance, if you need a car rental service, your travel agency will make all of the necessary arrangements.

They will also finalize all accommodations at the hotel or resort of your choice and arrange for any special requirements you or your family has. Travel agencies will also create an itinerary for you. They will give you a list of places to visit and go sightseeing, and can make the all of the reservations as well.

Travel agencies also offer great customer care and will check with you to see everything is going as planned. They want to ensure that your vacation goes smoothly and that you do not run into any complications. If you do find that you are having trouble on your holiday, the need to sort the problem out yourself is not necessary. Simply call your travel agent to deal with any hassles such as problems with your room, amenities, etc and they will correspond with the resort staff to ensure your stay is pleasant.

An Added Advantage of Travel Agencies

Besides the fact that travel agencies know where all the hotspots are, they sometimes have the advantage of knowing about a certain place or resort before anyone else does. Usually travel agencies will be notified first about new places opening, which is an advantage to you. Because they are notified first about these destinations, you get a chance to visit a location that no one has been to before.

Another advantage is that sometimes these new resorts require reviews and will allow travel agencies to refer customers to them in order to try the place. This is usually offered at a lower rate and so you save money for an equally fantastic vacation.

Outdoor Stoves

Outdoor stoves are used for preparing scrumptious dishes, when an individual is outdoors. You may either cook in your backyard or prepare meals when you are camping outside but for all such activities, you certainly need an outdoor cooking stove. The term "stove" refers to a cooking gadget which is used for cooking purpose or heat generation.

For a camper or backpacker, it is essential to carry an outdoor stove with him/her. The outdoor cooking stoves are very much acceptable since heat can be regulated as compared with open fires. Moreover, the outdoor stoves take much less time to cook food than charcoal grills. Every time you set fire to the charcoal, you are heavily dependent on outdoor conditions. It happens a lot of time that when you return to your campsite, after a day full of hectic outdoor activities, you are too tired to make repeated attempts to light charcoal. So, it is better to carry an outdoor cooking stove along with you.

Initially coal fueled or wood burning stoves were used, but due to the progress in technology, many more innovative and better versions of outdoor cooking stoves have been created. Pressurized cooking stoves are quite best-selling these days as they have the potency to set lite any type of inflammable liquid such as diesel, alcohol or any other type of motor fuel. They can certainly warm and cook the food very speedily.

The outdoor cooking stoves are available in a plethora of designs, styles and shapes. Backpacking stoves are an ideal option for those who travel long distances. Some outdoor stoves are larger, and can be transported by a car, canoe or horseback. Larger stoves store more fuel and facilitate the preparation for more than one dish at a time.

Outdoor stoves are tough and strong and are made in such a way that they can hold up against unpleasant climatic conditions. They are more or less sensibly priced and last for years, if kept properly.

So, get a suitable outdoor stove and make your outdoor cooking a nice and enjoyable affair!

When to Choose a Travel Agency for your Vacation

Travel agencies go beyond just finding plane tickets or booking a cruise. They often serve as the middle person between a traveler and the various services and destinations. It is a myth that booking through an agent will cost more. Travel agencies get their commissions from the various cruise lines, vacation packages, and airlines, not from the customer. This fact can actually save you money.

While it is true that if you simply need a flight from point A to point B, and back, you can probably get that on your own at a reasonable rate. Even if you need a hotel at point B for a few nights, you can negotiate that on your own and get a great rate. But, what if you need more than that? What if you don't have the time to shop the rates, negotiate, and then compare all the rates? That is where a travel agency can come in and help.

When preparing for a trip, the packing, planning at home and the destination, arranging for coverage at work, and all of the other little details can be daunting. So, if you can get a little help with the travel details, it can be a big help. A travel agency can handle all of these particulars for you.

A travel agency can often pull together the airfare, hotel accommodations, rental car, and maybe even a few meals and event tickets, and put them into a package deal that makes the entire trip much less stressful. Their immense network of connections in various locations and with various services can help make each transition in the trip easier. When it's done right you should not notice a bump anywhere, just a smooth ride from point A to point B.

The network of resources a travel agent has at their disposal pays off for you in price as well. Because a travel agency has connections with many different services they can find you the best flight, hotel, rental car, etc. for the right price. They spend the time researching all the options so you don't have to. When they are done, they can put together a package with the best price for each component of the trip. They have leeway in the pricing also, because their commission comes from the companies they sell for, so they can offer a lower cost by cutting their commission slightly. You win with a great price, the airlines and hotels win with people in their beds and seats, and the agency wins with a multi-part sale.

A travel agency can also answer many of the questions that arise before a trip. They can help with travel insurance, inoculation procedures, passport and visa applications, connections at the destination, and even transport from the airport to hotel. They can often answer destination specific questions to help you prepare for the trip, as well, such as climate conditions, crime rate, availability of certain amenities, etc.

Any time you are planning a long, multi-destination trip or specialized trip, a travel agency should be involved. The multi-destination trip can become very confusing, especially if the destinations are international. The various countries are all likely to have their own laws governing travel and a travel agent can help you navigate those laws. They can also help you book the best, most reliable flights to and from the various points.

A traveler going to a difficult country or one where Americans are unpopular should also use a travel agent. Whether the issue is obtaining a Visa or slipping into the country via a small charter service from a friendly country, a knowledgeable agent will be able to help with that. Sometimes flying to a country like Switzerland and then taking a small connecting flight on a European airline will reduce the tension upon entering some countries.

Travelers with special needs or special requests will find more success using an agency, also. If you want to get special rates for age, affiliation, or occupation, you might find it easier with a travel agent. If you need a specific room number in a particular hotel in the city of destination then you might need a travel agent to arrange that for you. If you must follow a specific diet while traveling, a travel agent might be able to recommend eating establishments or the location of specialty food stores. They can also arrange for accommodations on flights.

If you find yourself stranded your agent may be able to redirect you and get you moving again. If a snowstorm in Maine strands you at the airport, they can help to find you accommodations. If your flight out of Cleveland is mysteriously cancelled they can help you get on another plane. If the hotel you were supposed to stay at in Bangkok burned to the ground just before you got there, they can find alternate lodging. Such disasters are rare, but they do happen - and working with a travel agent means that you have an advocate and a helping hand while you are away from home.

Glowworms of the Waitomo Caves

In a small village located just a few hours from Auckland, New Zealand lies a cave system that serves as a major tourist attraction in New Zealand. Waitomo is a 300 resident village which plays host to over half a million tourists each year, many of which come to explore the caves of Waitomo and in particular, to witness one of the major attractions, the Waitomo Glowworm.

On a typical cave exploration anywhere else in the world, the only light to be seen usually comes from manmade floodlights or flashlights carried by the explorer. Without these sources of light, the explorer is left to experience true pitch-black conditions with the exception of the occasional and imagined flash of light. An exception to this rule can be found in the Waitomo Caves where an interesting biological phenomenon creates bits of light amidst the cave's pitch-black surroundings. Tourists from around New Zealand and the world come to play witness to this biological anomaly.

The Waitomo Glowworm, the known cause of this phenomenon, is actually the larvae of a fungus gnat which can only be found in New Zealand. Typically emanating from the ceiling of the cave, observers can witness what appears to be hundreds or thousands of glowing 'lights' against the backdrop of a pitch black cave. The experience of witnessing the Waitomo Glowworm has been compared by many to sitting on a dark hillside under the well lit, star-studded sky on a summer night. Playing witness to such a rare natural occurrence is nothing short of extraordinary.

Fortunately, playing witness to the Waitomo Glowworm doesn't require a great deal of adventurism or athleticism. This part of the Waitomo Cave tour good for all types of visitors. For the adventure-junkies, the areas around the Waitomo Glowworm caves also have much more to offer. Advanced cave tours lead the adventurous travelers deep into the cave system through tight crawl spaces and repelling into seemingly endless underground pits. To those who have experienced the depths of this cave system, the journey has been a memorable one.

How Can You Protect Yourself From Serious Mosquito Borne Diseases When You Travel On Vacation?

The mosquito is a major cause of a number of serious diseases throughout the world. Five of the most prevalent mosquito borne diseases are Malaria, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Dengue Fever, and West Nile Virus.

Malaria is the most common of these serious diseases caused by mosquitoes. Well over a million people die from this disease world wide each year.

Just like bed bugs, mosquitoes are attracted by the heat of your body as well as the carbon dioxide that you exhale. The female mosquitoes deposit their eggs into your bloodstream as they feed on your blood. These parasite eggs incubate and mature in your liver and then attack your red blood cells. The first symptoms of malaria usually arise within twenty-four hours. Some of the symptoms are a high fever, shivers and chills, as well as nausea and vomiting. These symptoms are usually followed by a deep sleep and then a flare up occurs. If these symptoms keep repeating themselves every two to three days, you must seek medical attention.

There is an anti-malaria prescription drug that can be taken to help protect you when you are traveling on holidays in mosquito infested tropical climates. But, to receive the maximum protection, this medication has to be taken before, during, and after your trip. However, even when taken properly as prescribed, these pills are not always completely effective.

If you get malaria, there are a number of pharmaceutical drugs such as Chloroquine, Doxycycline, Mefloquine, and Fansidar, can be prescribed to treat malaria, but again, they are not always totally effective. Ask your family doctor or pharmacist more about the dosage and length of time that you should take any of these prescription medications.

You can protect yourself from yellow fever by getting a vaccination from a physician at the local health authority before you travel on your holidays. This vaccination lasts approximately ten years and is very effective.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that is also transmitted by a bite from an infected mosquito. This disease can be prevented by a series of three vaccinations.

Dengue fever is another viral disease that is spread by mosquitoes. There is no vaccination to prevent this disease.

The West Nile Virus is also spread by infected mosquitoes. There is no vaccine available to protect you from this disease either.

Keep in mind that when it comes to all of the serious mosquito borne diseases, prevention is always better than a cure, even if there happens to be one. It is always best to limit the chance of being bitten and infected by mosquitoes in the first place. You should always wear loose fitting, long sleeved shirts and slacks and use a DEET containing insect repellent when mosquitoes become active near dusk. Also, be sure to kill all the mosquitoes in your room before going to sleep, and always use mosquito nets and coils when you are camping or planning on sleeping outdoors.

Use a Travel Agency to Book Your Spring Break Vacation

Instead of deal directly with the airlines, has it ever occurred to you to use a good travel agency to book your spring break vacation? Airlines will quote you fares and book your flights, but that's as far as they go. A travel agency can offer discounted fares, advice on spring break destinations, and may have a great deal or two for you and your friends. Spring break is barely two months away, so now is the ideal time to start looking for a travel agency.

If airlines are offering huge discounts to lure money-weary individuals into travelling, imagine the larger discounts that a travel agency can offer. Since travel agents purchase blocks of seats, they can pass on the savings to their customers.

There are numerous travel agencies, but there is only a fraction of those agencies that cater to the special needs of the student travel industry. Although you can use any travel agency to book your spring break vacation, why not choose a travel agency that specializes in student tours and spring break vacations?

Looking for the Right Travel Agency: Tips

Before you book your next spring break vacation, the travel agency must satisfy certain requirements. You may want to look into the following criteria:

• Full Description of Services - Does the travel agency introduce itself adequately to potential customers? Do they have contact numbers, student packages, discount programs, and do they explain the procedures for their spring break packages as well as clearly state their refund policy?
• Variety - Does the travel agency have a wide range of destination choices and do they have hotel categories that meet all budgets? Some travel agencies like to specialize in a certain number of destinations - USA, Canada, or Mexico; some cover the world! When travel agencies can book spring break vacations almost anywhere in the world, that means that they've been in the student travel industry long enough and are confident that they can offer far away and exotic destinations without any problems because they belong to a large network of travel professionals;
• Discounts and Deals - Does the travel agency extend discounts for group travel or do they have frequent hot deals to offer? The capability to offer great deals can mean any number of things: they have good relationships with major airlines, hotels and tourist organizations, they receive discounted rates from suppliers and they in turn offer these to student travelers, or they are booking so many flights and vacation packages that they earn free points or free miles. You could be offered a deal to the Bahamas, your destination of choice, because the travel agency happened to receive a deal from a Bahamas tour operator at the time you booked!
• Photographs - Wouldn't it be nice to see what you are getting into? If you are going to a spring break destination for the first time, you would want to know what kind of hotel you're staying at, wouldn't you? It isn't enough for the travel agency to say, "You're booked at a 4-star hotel". You'll want to know the name and location of that hotel so you can look it up on the Internet or ask people about it, plus you'll want to see the rooms, dining facilities, and recreational facilities. Some travelers have been dismayed to find out that the hotel had only one treadmill, as opposed to what the travel agency described as a "full operating gym". Or that the travel agency said 12 tennis courts, when in fact the hotel did not have any, referring travelers instead to a sports center a mile away!
• Interactive web site -Instead of spending precious minutes on the phone asking the travel agent about destinations, packages and vacation amenities, it would be simpler to do the search yourself on their web site by giving you the option to select a city and a package. When you've found what you're looking for, that is when you call and ask for details that weren't covered on their web site.
• Flexibility - some travel agents require you to pay for their packaged vacations to be able to receive discounts, but some travel agents are flexible in that they allow you to choose only air, or only hotel, or both.

A good travel agency is well organized. This important trait is evident in the way they present travel information. For example, there are websites that are designed to specifically cater to students. They list the cities they serve with a brief article about popular attractions and then you click on a link and the screen displays what their package covers plus costs for the city you selected.

So if you're using a travel agency to book your spring break vacation, look for an agency that's efficient, organized and capable of offing some fantastic deals.

The UK's Best Dive Sites and How to Get There

Somewhat of a closely guarded secret, the scuba diving in the UK is superb - with a coastline of thousands of historical shipwrecks to discover, encounters with playful seals, beautiful drifts though glorious underwater scenery full of soft corals and plentiful marine life.

One of the hotspots for UK diving is the Orkney Islands - the harbour at Scapa Flow is visited by divers from all over the world to explore the sunken World War 1 battleships of the German fleet - puposefully scuttled under command of the German admiralty in 1919 to avoid surrendering the ships to conquering British forces. From the Orknies it is also possible to dive St Kilda, well known for its birdlife, and the underwater marine life is no less spectacular.

There are at least 10 locations in the UK where it is possible to dive with seals, but the most popular has to be the Farne Islands off Northumbria. Here you can pretty much guarantee an encounter with a playful seal or two and experience the thrill of diving through gullies, along underwater cliffs and through fields of atmospheric life supporting kelp forest.

The soft corals and sponges that adorn the cliffs of the Farnes can be seen all over the UK. There are beautiful dives in particular around the south west coast of the UK which the Gulf Stream keeps supplied with plenty of nutrients. The Manacles in Cornwall has reefs, drop offs and pinnacles covered with jewel anemonies and colourful fish, and I haven't even mentioned the Scillies with wrecks, reefs and walls decorated with corals, sea fans and sea squirts. Similarly divers come from all over the world to visit the Skelligs in southern Ireland with its consistently clear waters perfect for underwater photography.

Larger marine life is out there - some divers are lucky enough to witness the annual migration of the basking sharks, or the occasional dolphin or sunfish. For me personally an encounter with a seahorse off the coast of the Isle of Wight was a moment I will never forget.

So how do you access these dive sites? Dive charter boats on divesearch are waiting to take you there, visit the clickable map to find one and research the useful links you need to plan a trip and refresh your diving skills or start from scratch. And did I mention 10% off teepee holidays in Jersey with BleuSoleil when you book through divesearch?

Tips For Using An Online Travel Agency For The First Time

Deciding to set aside some time to go on vacation is both fun and exciting; the worst part however, may be organizing the trip. Planning the entire trip yourself takes time and effort, and you might not always know the best locations, hotels and tourist attractions to visit. After all of the time and energy spent planning a vacation on your own, don't be surprised if you feel like you need a separate vacation to relax from all of the stress the first one caused.

Advantages of Using an Online Travel Agency

It can be very time consuming to plan a vacation, and the best way to ensure you enjoy yourself is to work with someone while making all of the necessary arrangements. The amount of time it takes to go into a travel agency and meet face to face with the agent is not always available, and doing it over the phone can cause a lot of confusion. A more time efficient option is to use an online travel agency. It is not only faster, but you will be able to view all packages before making a decision. With dozens of online travel agencies available, making bookings online is very accessible and, at the click of a button, you will have a vacation waiting for you.

This service is a great way to ensure that all your vacation needs are taken care of and that you can ultimately relax when you are away. Online travel agencies give just as much customer care and attention as you will receive when you walk into an agency. You will be assisted throughout your bookings and will be made to feel like you are in safe hands. You will get advice on the best destinations and will be able to view photos and read testimonials on these places.

Online travel agencies offer an impeccable service at low commissions. Compared to a walk in travel agency, you will probably save more money on agent fees considering you choose the travel company wisely and do your homework to compare prices of other existing online travel agencies.

How to Select an Online Travel Agency

When it comes to choosing online travel agencies there are a few tips that you might want to follow. If it is your first time, you are probably eager to start clicking away but before you start, it might be wise to listen to what some of your family and friends say.

Ask around and find out which online travel agencies people recommend. This will not only save you time going through many travel sites but you will also have a first hand testimonial about the agencies service and customer care. Try to remain open minded though. Remember that good service does not mean the same to everyone, but obvious dissatisfactions we all have in common.

Once you have considered these recommended online agencies, do not stop there. It is time for you to do a little research and compare other websites, but at least through these recommendations you will have an idea on how much you need to pay, what type of service to expect, etc. Go through travel agencies sites that suite your budget and pick a destination accordingly. Also, try to find out what the most popular travel location this online travel agency refers clients to. By doing so, you might even be lucky enough to score a discounted price.

The key to approach any online travel agency is to be knowledgeable. The worst that could happen to you is either you get ripped off by paying more than what the holiday is worth, or you end up vacationing at a place nothing like what you expected. Also, look for companies that allow you to choose your own travel route and beware of ones that try to force you into visiting a location you really do not want to.

Other Advantages of Online Travel Agencies

Not only are online travel agencies very useful when it comes to working out holiday itineraries, but they can be useful in a couple of other instances as well. Example, simple procedures such as booking flights might be a walk in the park for some, but for others it seems like a complicated process that they fear. Online travel agents can assist in booking local flights as well as international flights and will also take care of business trip arrangements. For business travel, online travel agencies will book accommodation for the night and make sure you have reliable transport available. All you have to do is visit the website and all correspondence is done via e-mail.

This seamless process can really alleviate some of the stress commonly associated with traveling. Using an online travel agency is advantageous in many ways, but relieving some unnecessary stress may be at the top of the list.

Tips for Finding Great Deals on Cruises

A cruise is a great way to beat the winter blues, or get that all inclusive vacation for the whole family. A cruise is the best way to get to many destinations. Cruise ships offer so many amenities that most feel like a floating city. Once a vacationer experiences the enjoyment of a cruise they come back for more.

So, a cruise is a great vacation, but what about the price? Nothing spoils a great vacation faster than going into debt to pay for it. Below are some tips for finding the best deals on cruises.

Be Flexible

One of the best ways to find a great cruise deal is to be flexible about your vacation. Flexibility in the type of cabin, ship, and to some degree the destination, can all increase the opportunity to find deals. Being flexible about departure dates can also reduce the rates significantly.

Choosing off-peak times is also a matter of flexibility. If you are willing to hit the Caribbean in the summer or Alaska in spring or fall you might find more deals. These ships tend to be less crowded and the rates lower. These might be the last, or first, trips of the season and the cruise lines will often offer discounts just to fill the cabins.

For those who are a little more adventurous and have lots of flexibility in their schedule, last minute booking can often save a lot. Ships that are not full will offer reduced rates in an attempt to fill their cabins. This method can be risky and may result in missing a chosen sailing, but can also result in substantial savings.

Flexibility in departure cities can save money also. Departing from the Northeast, especially early in the season, can decrease the cost by quite a bit. When the ships are leaving their home ports and heading south to start the season you can sometimes get a great booking rate from their home city. You might also save on airfare if you live near one of the departure cities. Driving to the port, as opposed to purchasing a flight, is considerably cheaper. Jacksonville, New Orleans, Norfolk, and points in Texas often offer comparable cruises at much lower rates than the ones departing from South Florida.

Book Early

"Early Bird" discounts are very common in the cruise industry. Booking a cruise early, before it begins to fill up, is a great opportunity to get discounts. Once a ship gets near capacity, especially for popular destinations, the discounts dry up and the remaining cabins go for full price.

Booking summer vacations in the mid- to late winter timeframe is a great way to take advantage of these deals. This allows time to shop for the best deals and still book early enough to enjoy the discounts. The same holds true for winter voyages. Booking these in the summer often results in substantial savings.

Use an Agent

Travel agents can often shop the available cruise lines and find the best deal to meet your needs. Some agents specialize in certain cruise lines, but they also often have more leverage with those lines and can offer additional discounts not found directly through the line. Since agents get commissions on each cruise vacation they book, they can often give part of that commission as a discount, to entice the vacationer. This means an even lower rate.

Agents also know the best destinations for the particular time of year to get the best value. They can "shop" the various ships and packages to find one that suits your individual needs. To get the best value from an agent, do a little research first and then ask about the cruises that you found that best suit your plans and price range.

Get All-Inclusive

Cruises offer a wide array of on-board entertainment and food choices. These are always included in the price. The hidden costs can add up quickly. Port charges and taxes, tips, alcoholic beverages, special services, and special events on land can all add up to increase the total coast of the trip.

Airfare is another added cost that can increase the overall price of the trip by a large amount. Many cruise packages offer airfare in the deal. However, sometimes this is from one, or a limited number of, locations. Getting to those airports can increase the cost, as well. Shop for deals that include airfare from your local airport, rental car or shuttle service to the departure point, hotel accommodations (if you will need to stay in the port city before or after the trip), and return airfare, preferably at discounted rates.

Tips, and most port charges and taxes, are seldom included in the price, but a good agent can help you plan for those costs ahead of time. This should be factored into the final decision on destinations and ship choice.

Tips for Booking a Cruise through a Travel Agency

When you are using a travel agency to book your cruise, you already know that you are going to get the best deal and that you are going to have access to all sorts of different packages. However, in order to be sure that you have found the perfect cruise for you and your family, there are a few things that you should keep in mind as you work with the agency.

Discuss with your travel agent about the different cruise lines that they work with and what those cruise lines offer. Often, if you simply go to book a cruise with a travel agency, they will go to the cruise line that gives them the biggest commission. However, there are other cruise lines that they might work with, and it is important for you to know this. The reason is that different cruise lines, and different ships, have things to offer that are vastly different. For instance, some cruise lines have lots of programs for children, while some of them focus on adults and leave kids to fend for themselves. Some cruise lines have specific cruises for singles, widows, and other various groups of people. If you truly want the best cruising experience, something that you will want to consider will be looking at these different cruise lines and ships. Therefore, talk to your agent about the various lines they work with and the cruises that are available.

Another thing that you need to think about when you are booking a cruise through a travel agency is the location. Again, some travel agents get bigger commissions to go with specific locations, and so they will try to place you in cruises that might benefit them the most, rather than thinking about what you would really like - so make sure the agent understands your preferences. Ask about the other locations and destinations and see which types of deals those places might have for you. Your travel agent will have a good idea of which destinations are best if you are single, if you are going with your spouse, or if you are going with your children or extended family. Different destinations mean different things for travelers, and so you really want to think about this and research it before you book your cruise.

When you are booking a cruise with a travel agency, another thing that you want to think about is the time of the year you will be taking your cruise and what this means for pricing and destinations. Some destinations only offer cruises at specific times of the year, which means that those destinations are not going to be open all year round. Some cruise lines will follow the same route but stop at different islands or at different destinations, and each of the destinations that they might stop at will have different things for you, your spouse, or your kids. Therefore, in order to make sure that the cruising experience is the best that it can be for all of you, you will want to talk to your travel agent about the specific places you will be going with your cruise ship.

Another tip to follow when planning a cruise with your travel agent is to look at the on board entertainment as it pertains to you and your family. Each of the ships will have different entertainment, whether this is musical acts, comedians, magic shows, or other types of entertainment. Therefore, something that you want to keep in mind is that whether you are traveling alone, with your spouse, or with your children, the types of entertainment that you are seeing should mirror the things that you most enjoy. You do not necessarily want to attend a cruise with mostly family-friendly entertainment if you are a single person, and you do not want to take your children on a cruise that offers only gambling and other adult-themed entertainment. Ask your travel agent about the onboard entertainment, and you will be sure to choose a line and ship that is best for you.

When you are booking a cruise, you will probably have many questions, and you want to be sure that you can get the best deal. Therefore, you will always want to look at going through a travel agent. They can help you by answering your questions, and by making sure that you know the deal you are getting is going to be the best possible. Booking a cruise is something that you should be happy about and something that you should take pride in, so go ahead and make sure that the cruise you choose with your travel agency will lead to the memories of a lifetime for you and your family. You will be glad that you did.

Plan a Ski Vacation with a Travel Agency

There are several different ways that you can plan a trip. Many people like to go it alone, making their own reservations, doing their own working, and hoping that they stumble onto the best deals. Sometimes, people don't even do any planning, they just go ahead and take the trip, and fly by the seat of their pants. In both of these types of trip taking, you might end up with some good deals. But, more often than not, you are going to end up paying much more for your trip, and maybe experiencing a little more stress than you really need. Planning your trip on your own can be stressful and time consuming, and it can also end up costing you much more money than you thought it would.

Sometimes people like to have a little bit of help, and this can be where a travel agency comes into play. If you plan a ski vacation with a travel agency, you are going to get lots of benefits that you might have not even thought of. You'll be able to have the trip of your dreams, and you'll be able to say that you truly have been there and done that. You really want to relax and enjoy your trip, so don't add to the stress by planning the entire thing on your own! Remember that travel agents are there to help you, so you'll be able to book the best trip possible.

When you book a ski vacation with a travel agency, you get many things that you might not even have thought of. The first of the benefits are found in the process itself. When you are working with a travel agency, you usually go right to them and talk to someone face to face. A travel agent is assigned to you, and you get down to work planning the best trip possible. You will explain what you would like to get out of your ski vacation, and they see what types of trips they'll be able to give you that meet your needs.

Also, you will have a chance to look at brochures or different places that you might go, and different vacations that you might take. Each travel agency is going to be different, but all of them will be affiliated with different locations and have deals at different lodges and with different airlines. As you browse through their deals, you will have a chance to see which trips will be the best for you. As you are looking at all of these pieces of information, you can get a good idea about the type of trip you would like to take, and from there, you should be able to get to that perfect place.

Working one on one with someone allows you to look at the various trips they have to offer, and compare those trips to others. You can make sure that you are getting the best deal in this way, and it can allow you to be really happy with what you have chosen. When you work with a travel agent, you should be able to take advantage of deals that are available only to that agency, which means that these are deals you would never be able to get while planning a trip on your own.

Another benefit of booking with a travel agency is that you are going to be allowed to book far in advance. Often times, agencies will get you even better deals by having you book trips well ahead of time. This serves a couple of purposes. First of all, it allows you to get the best deal for your trip, and it also allows you to have the satisfaction of knowing that your trip has been planned well in advance. You have plenty of time to make other arrangements at your destination, and to get a good idea of where you are going to be and what you are going to be doing when you plan well in advance.

There are also package deals that you can take advantage of when you are booking a ski vacation through a travel agency. For instance, you can save money on the lodging, the plane ticket, and also on the car rental for while you are there. These are basic package deals, but travel agencies have even more to offer you, including packages for chair rentals and eating out on your vacation. Going through a travel agency allow you to have all of these choices, and have access to all of these deals while you book your trip.

Different forms of camping and camping equipment

Camping - an outdoor leisure activity is a cheap form of accommodation for people attending large open air events. Most people enjoy nature while camping by spending one or more nights, usually at a campsite. Camping may involve the use of a tent, a primitive structure, or no shelter at all.

Camping describes a range of activities such as climbing, mountain tracking, swimming, fishing etc. Survivalist campers usually set off with little more than their hiking boots, whereas recreational vehicle travelers arrive equipped with their outdoor camping equipment like electricity, camping stoves, patio furniture, regatta clothing etc.

Let's know discuss about different forms of camping:

Mobile Camping: This form of tent camping is also known as backpacking. Backpacking campers use lightweight camping equipment that can be carried long distances on foot. They usually hike across the land, camping at remote spots, often selecting campsites at will if resource protection rules allow.

Canoe Camping: This form of camping is usually common in North America .It is similar to backpacking with the only difference being that canoe is used as a mode of transportation to carry weight in place of a backpack.

Bicycle touring or motorcycle camping: The bicycle or motorcycle is used to carry the camping gear and as the primary means of transportation, allowing greater distances to be covered than backpacking although less capacity for storage.

Winter Camping: It simply means camping outside during the winter - often at the places where there is snow on the ground.

Adventure Camping: Camping by people who indulge into activities like adventure racing or mountain racing during the day time and camp in a minimalist way at night is known as adventure camping. Such campers usually carry basic items of camping like sleeping bags, lightweight gelert tents, small camping stoves etc with them.

Camping is now recognized as a key part of the leisure activity around the world. The right equipment with right planning goes a long way in the camping experience. You have lot to see and enjoy than worrying for the camping gears in the middle of nowhere.

The English Lake District - A Walkers Guide to Scafell Pike

The highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, lies in the western part of the English Lake District - an area of breathtaking scenery mostly within the Lake District National Park. The mountain at 978 metres or 3210 feet is generally accepted as being a harder walk than the slightly higher Snowdon in Wales, and though a very popular hike it is probably less climbed than Helvellyn in the eastern part of Lake District. Scafell Pike lies in probably the least accessible part of the region and all of the routes to it cross excessively rough and stony ground. That's without the weather - we'll come to that later!

Scafell Pike though is one of Lakeland's best outings and here I have outlined the main routes of ascent and their individual merits. None have any technical difficulties but you will become well aquainted with large stones - lots of them.

For the walker approaching from Borrowdale to the north - easily accessible from the Keswick area - there are two main routes to Scafell Pike. The path via Esk Hause is probably the most used and the easiest. This well marked and usually busy path leaves Seathwaite which is as far as you can drive up Borrowdale, and continues up the valley to Stockley Bridge - a picturesque stone bridge spanning the stream. Just beyond the bridge, the left fork of the path is taken leading eventually to Esk Hause at 2490 feet - the pass about 400 m south west of the stone shelter. From Esk Hause, the path which remains easy to follow, heads up to the right then bends left and crosses a stony plateau. The route becomes progressively rougher the further you go and dips down slightly twice before a final steep ascent leads to the summit.

The Corridor Route is the other main route from Borrowdale and is the better of the two in my opinion being more varied and interesting. Follow the path up to Stockley Bridge as in the previous route but instead take the right fork of the path climbing up ahead to Sty Head Pass, the pass between Borrowdale and Wasdale Head. Turning left at the pass, a path then soon leads away to the right across steep looking ground. It traverses between the crags and past the gully of Piers Ghyll before climbing up to Lingmell Col. There is one short easy scramble near Piers Ghyll but no other difficulty. A stony path now winds its way up from the col to Scafell Pike up to the left.

For the walker setting off from Langdale - easy access from Ambleside and Windermere - an easy but long route heads along the valley of Mickleden to the infamous Rossett Gill path. Climbing Rossett Gill is not difficult but very loose and rough and is unlikely to rank among the favorites of Lakeland fellwalkers. The worst can be bypassed by a series of paths up the slopes to the left of the main eroded route. After Rossett Gill a wide constructed - and usually busy path leads through some wonderful high country to the shelter below Esk Hause where the main route from Borrowdale is joined.

From Eskdale to the south a much less used route ventures into the remote country of Upper Eskdale to reach Samsons Stones - several huge boulders scattered on the valley floor beneath Scafell's Cam Spout Crag. The path ascends the steep mountainside to Mickledore which is the ridge separating Scafell Pike from Scafell. From Mickledore the route to the Pike turns roughly north up more rough ground to the summit. There is no walkers route directly up to the neighboring peak of Scafell from Mickledore. The Eskdale route does not have any technical difficulties but is not for totally inexperienced walkers doing their first outing in the Fells. This side of the mountain is much more remote and you will encounter far fewer people. It is my favorite route to Scafell Pike.

Finally 2 routes ascend from what is arguably England's finest mountain valley - Wasdale Head. The most direct way up Scafell Pike leaves Wasdale Head from near the campsite and ascends Brown Tongue to the natural stony amphitheatre of Hollowstones below the rock walls of Scafell Crag and Pikes Crag. You can head up to Lingmell Col from here and join the upper part of the Corridor Route from Borrowdale but while Lingmell Col is a good spot, this misses out the best of both routes. Instead ascend to Mickledore by an easy scramble and bear left past Pulpit Rock to the summit. This will make up for the trudge up Brown Tongue which is neither Wasdale's nor Scafell Pike's finest feature.

A better route from Wasdale is to follow the Sty Head path to that pass and join the corridor route from Borrowdale thus reaching Lingmell Col by a longer but more interesting path.

Finally that promised word about the weather. Do not be fooled by the modest altitude of Scafell Pike. Sprinkling Tarn on the Borrowdale side of the mountain has the dubious honour of being officially the wettest place in England which isn't a particularly dry place to start with. Add to that that England's highest mountain is one of the first big objects in the path of the prevailing west and south west winds. Yes this part of the Lake District has some weather patterns to rival New Zealand's Southern Alps and likely as not you will see all four seasons in a day - often in an hour! Don't let that put you off though, it's all part of the fun - take clothes that will keep you warm and dry and enjoy a great day in the hills.

Ski Goggles: Essential For The Ski Season

Snow covered slopes have always been a paradise for skiers. Skiing is a popular winter adventure sport for people who take pleasure in speeding down ice covered mountain paths.

Skiing is an expensive sport, as the gear that is required is quite costly. The most important equipment are ski goggles, as they play the role of eyes in determining the path in skiing.

Ski goggles are made of a semi elastic material, like rubber, so that in case of a collision the goggles bend and do not injure your cheek bone. Ski goggles have an attached elastic strap so that it perfectly fits the skier and prevents them from falling off while skiing. Ski goggles undergo chemical treatment, which makes the lenses water resistant and this further helps in reducing fogging.

During skiing, you are constantly slapped by ice, wind, snow, rocks etc. Therefore, you need some kind of protection for your eyes so that you can see through the whole event. Ski goggles are required for the purpose of protecting your eyes from harsh weather conditions.

While choosing ski goggles, you should choose those goggles which are not only good looking, but also have all the required features to protect your eyes.
Before buying a pair of ski goggles, always check if they offer UV protection or not. Ultra violet rays are quite harmful to the eyes, as they tend to burn the cornea causing cataracts and other eye problems. Skiers are more vulnerable to UV rays as they are reflected off the snow.

The ski goggles should have anti-fog and ventilation attributes. They should have tiny holes in them to aid circulation, which keeps the eyes refreshed and also reduces fogging and makes it easier for skiers to concentrate on the path.

Ski goggles come in many tints and colours, and each tint has a different function. Light coloured lenses allow more light to enter while more light is blocked in dark coloured lenses.

Lenses with a bronze tint are the best at providing protection against UV rays; they are multifunctional and can be worn both in sunny and cloudy conditions. Chrome tinted lenses are better suited for bright sunlight conditions. Clear lenses are used in bad weather conditions like blizzards and snow storms, as they allow better visibility.

Nowadays you can get ski goggles with polarised lenses. Polarised lenses have an added advantage for skiers as they stop light reflected off snow, which many skiers find bothersome. However it has a major drawback too; with polarised lenses it is impossible for the skier to see ice patches, which can be very dangerous.

For skiers who wear glasses for corrective vision, there are some ski goggle models that allow the skier to wear spectacles under them. There are manufacturers that provide ski goggles with vision correcting lenses, but they are quite expensive.

Ski Goggles are an essential gear for skiing as it helps in protecting eyes from extreme weather conditions like snow, heavy rain or hail. Selecting a proper lens for your ski goggles completes 80% of the task.

Then select the best predator call that suits well for that particular animal. Before buying or using a predator it is advisable to get the permission from the commission of wild life because in some place the use of predator call is banned. Apart from a trial camera and a predator call, the hunters can also a get a digital range finder camera. It is nothing but a camera that is fixed with a range finder. It is used to find the distance of the object that is being focused and that of the camera. They have a very good zooming option with which pictures can be taken which will have an excellent clarity. Ladies, You CAN Ride Your Own Motorcycle!

It doesn't matter if you're tall or short, younger or older, if you want to ride your own motorcycle, YOU CAN! I thought I would never have my own ride. I thought I was too short, I wasn't strong enough, and I was too old. I WAS WRONG. Here's how I got started.

I had been riding behind my husband for probably 20 years off and on, never going anywhere in particular, and just seeing the country roads on the weekends. One day it struck me like a bolt out of the blue. I could see a whole lot more if his head wasn't in the way! I'd had my own bike once before, but I either had to stop at a curb or have someone taller on the back. What a joke that was, not to mention dangerous. That was 1984 and I never tried to learn again after that fiasco. I just thought I was stuck on the back forever.

After my epiphany that day on the country road, I bought a 2003 Harley Superglide and just thought I could jump on and go. WRONG!! Riding responsibly and having a good time takes some preparation. I strongly recommend a motorcycle safety course, available around the country, as opposed to learning from a friend, and here's why:
1. Everyone in the class is a new rider, so nobody laughs.
2. The instructors are experts.
3. It's a huge confidence builder before riding with friends or relatives.

After I took my safety course I could hold up that 600+lb motorcycle, start it and take off confidently. I was ready for real street practice, and practice I did. I rode every weekend from May to August. By the end of August I was ready for a road trip. We set off for Chattanooga, Tennessee. Imagine, a brand new rider heading for the back mountain roads. What a blast!

I learned a few things on that trip, like how great a group of bikers can be and how much fun it is to just take off. I also learned what I needed to take and how to pack my gear. Saddle bags work great on a non-touring model, just slip 'em under the seat. For a longer trip, I add a leather backpack style bag that fits over the sissy bar. A tent and sleeping bag save on room costs, too. Always remember a good leather coat, chaps and gloves because sixty degrees in the yard is a lot warmer than sixty degrees at highway speeds. Rain gear is a good idea, too. It's nice to have some tunes on the road as well, so I carry an MP3 player and ear buds. A digital camera is a must if you want to remember the ride and the great people you met, and if you just can't get away from cyberspace, a laptop and Wi-Fi signal detector are really handy.

So, ladies, there you have it. If you think you're too short, or too old, or too whatever, remember this; I'm 5'2", I got my first real motorcycle at 43, and I'm nowhere near ready to quit riding.

I'm not stuck on the back anymore!

Hillwalking in the Oban Area

Hillwalking in Scotland attracts visitors from all over the world. While many prefer to walk in popular areas such as Glencoe, the Grampians or Arrocher Alps, some discerning hillwalkers will tell you that the Oban and Argyll area offers some classic climbs with equally classic views. Situated on Scotland's West Coast and a two hour drive from Glasgow, climbing here is not only exciting and varied, but much less quiet than the more popular climbs.

All of the hills and mountains here lie close to the sea so summit views are spectacular and varied. In one direction lies the island-dotted Firth of Lorne and Sound of Jura with the Atlantic beyond. Turn around and the rolling Scottish Highlands stretch into the distance, peppered with mountain peaks. The short list below describes some celebrated walks in the area.

Ben Lora

A few miles north of Oban at the village of Benderloch is Ben Lora. At only 308m, this hill may not be tall, but the views from the top are among one of the best in Scotland. Take the forest path from the carpark just south of the petrol station in Benderloch. The waymarked path splits in a couple of places with one (the left) giving a gentler start to the walk which becomes steeper further up. Most of the route is through deciduous then coniferous forest where the path is steep but solid underfoot. As it nears the top it becomes boggier, but with perseverance, the walker is rewarded with a magnificent vista over sandy-beached Tralee Bay, past Connel Bridge, all the way to Oban with the Firth of Lorne and Mull in the distance. Turning around there is another fine view up Loch Etive to the Ben Cruachan range. There are wooden benches at key points on the route to rest tired legs or admire the view. Walking time is 1.5 to 2.5 hours and the distance is 3.75 miles.

Pulpit Hill and Gallanach

This varied walk starts in Oban's town centre and ends on a moorland hill behind the town. From Albany Road follow the sign marked "Gallanach and the Kerrera ferry." After the library, a sign "Pulpit Hill" points up the steep Haggart's Brae. Take this path to the top, all the while following the Scottish Rights of Way Society signs. At the top is a fine viewpoint overlooking Oban and its harbour as well as the "Priest's Stone" which once served as a pulpit. Take the lane out of the carpark and follow the road to a signed "Kerrera Ferry." Continue along this muddy woodland path past the mill pond, some deciduous woodland and on into open moorland. After some boggy ground, the path clears, so continue on to reach the viewpoint. From here, the track meets a minor road. At this fork, turning right leads back to Oban while turning left leads to Gallanach. This is a good 4 mile walk and should take around 2 hours.

Beinn Fhionnlaidh (Ben Fee-on-lay)

This mountain is the closest Munro to Oban and its summit views give interesting views of Glencoe and Glen Etive. Start at the end of the public road in Glen Creran. Following the signs for Glen Etive and Glenure Lodge continue on past the bridge, turning left towards the white cottage. Take a left turn immediately after the farm and follow the rough track behind the second cottage. This leads through ancient pine forest and when it splits, take the right fork which leads onto the Fhionnlaidh ridge. The ridge undulates for a while and although the summit is not visible there are good views of Beinn Sgulaird across Glen Ure. Where the ridge levels out there are a few lochans. Continue eastwards up the steepening ridge to the summit which has a large cairn and trig point. From here, there are fine views of Loch Etive stretching down to the Firth of Lorne and Glen Coe. At 9 miles, this is for the more serious walker and should take around 5-6 hours.

Many routes have been signposted by the Scottish Rights of Way Society and the Argyll Forestry Commission which makes navigation easy. In addition, a good local hotel or shop, or the Tourist Information Centre in Oban's Albany Street can provide leaflets on walks and routes.

Harry Young works for Toltech Internet Solutions and writes on behalf of Loch Melfort Hotel. A family run, comfortable and friendly 3-star, 2 AA Rosette hotel on the romantic coast of Argyll in the Scottish Highlands with the finest views on the West coast. Offering the very best in service, tranquil accommodation, tasteful decor and a gourmet dining experience made with fresh local seafood and produce.

Why You Wouldn't Want To Be Without A Sleeping Bag During The Winter Season

A sleeping bag is an essential accompaniment when camping, climbing or hiking, if you are not within reach of a bed. Sleeping bags are designed to provide warmth and thermal insulation. They can protect, to some degree, against the chill of wind, damp and general exposure - but you should really use your sleeping bag within a tent (or a least a bivouac sack, which is a waterproof cover for a sleeping bag) if you are caught short in bad weather.

Most sleeping bags can be rolled up and carried within a rucksack. They are typically square with a zip on one or two sides but generally they do not unzip all the way to bottom because heat is lost through the zipper. Some sleeping bags are specifically designed for the male or female and there are kiddie versions. There is normally a drawstring at the top to aid the trapping of warm air. There is a wide variety of insulating materials for sleeping bags. Goose down or a synthetic fill is generally used to insulate the bags. These are equal at helping to keep warm and help prevent hypothermia. Many sleeping bag shells are covered with a durable water repellent finish, which should guard against moisture reaching the inner.

There are four different types of Sleeping Bags. The summer season bag, which is suitable for temperatures 35 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, a 3 season bag that covers 10 degrees to 35 degrees Fahrenheit, a cold weather bag that covers minus ten to plus ten degrees Fahrenheit and lastly the winter/extreme sleeping bag that is suitable for under minus ten degrees Fahrenheit.

For the winter season you should choose a sleeping bag that is suitable for the conditions that you may expect while away, so either the cold weather bag or the winter/extreme bag would be best. Carefully consider the temperatures that may occur in the locations that you going to. Choose between a bag for men or women. Are you going to get wet? Down can get wet easily, and thermal insulation would become affected. Synthetic is cheaper and is great for those that experience rain or don't have much money to spend on a bag. It can become extremely cold very quickly early in the winter, so if you are out for a long expedition ensure that you have a suitable sleeping bag that you can get into before you run the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. In order to avoid the risk of hypothermia ensure that you get into your sleeping bag with full clothes on that are dry, keep the bag zipped up and drawstring tight around your head, make sure you have eaten and are well hydrated - and if possible, use a tent or bivy shelter which can add an extra ten degrees.

You can enhance your sleeping bag's life by hanging it in a garage or somewhere equally suitable. If this is not possible store the sleeping bag loosely in a cotton storage sack to ensure that the insulation does not become permanently compressed, which reduces all heating properties.

Where There Is A Sea There Are Pirates!

The annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival is going on in Tampa soon! I had never even heard about it until I moved to Tampa. I was invited to go by some new friends, and they said it was kind of like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It was pretty interesting to say the least! There were parade floats (mainly shaped like pirate ships) going down the streets of the old historic section of Ybor City tossing beads into the crowd, and shooting blank pistols. There were food vendors off to the side, little shops, and just tons of people! It is said that over 400,000 people attend.

It's about the legend of Jose' Gaspar that was said to be a Spanish pirate that operated in southwestern Florida. It was first held in 1904 on horseback. In the parade, the "crew" all dressed in pirate and wench costumes, arrives on a 165 ft. long pirate ship landing by downtown Tampa. The mayor of the city lends the key of the city to Captain Gaspar and they go on down one of the city's major streets, Bayshore Boulevard. The festivities last for a few weeks! It begins with the children's parade. They launch fireworks over Tampa Bay. A couple of weeks after the "invasion" mentioned above, there's a more adult oriented night parade in Ybor City.

Mardi Gras begins February 24th, the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans, Louisiana, Brazil and Rio de Janeiro! In Europe they have "Carnival". Ireland and the U.K. have what is called "Shrovetide" where eating pancakes are their tradition on Shrove Tuesday. This is also popular in the Caribbean and parts of Latin America.

Well, keep in mind as the old saying goes "Where there is a sea there are pirates". No matter where you'll be, if you're near festivities or crowds, it's always a good idea to keep yourself protected as these kind of festivities are also usually associated with alcoholics, pick pockets, robbers and who knows what else. You don't want to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and not be able to protect yourself. The Runt Stun Gun is a great light weight little device with max power to have on you!

Yours In Safety,

Regina Jacques

Dont Forget These Items The Next Time You Go Camping

I have been camping since I was five years old. My dad would drag (literally at first) me and my brother out into the woods to enjoy a weekend of camping, fishing and hiking. Little did I know then as I was throwing a fit to not leave the comforts of my warm bed, that I would become a campaholic.

Ok campaholic is not a "real" word but I added it to my Microsoft Word dictionary so it would not be mistaken as an error. If you ever used MS Word then you know what I am talking about. In any event my definition, for you purists out there, would be any person who is addicted to camping.

That describes me to a tee now. I love to go camping and although my schedule prohibits me from going each and every weekend, I try to get out about 3 times in the spring and 3 times again in the fall. I personally do not like camping in the summer. The summer is hot and when it's hot you can't enjoy the campfire which is one of the draws to camping in the first place.

Since I have been camping a lot I have also gotten a lot of my friends into it as well. The question I receive the most is, "what should I bring?" That is an open ended question, and you really could answer with anything. But what I wanted to touch on are some of the things that I consider essentials (the items beyond bringing your food of course).

Tent
Well it goes without saying that if you forget your tent you will be sleeping under the stars. Now I have done that myself, but let me be the first to tell you that it is only enjoyable up to the point when it starts to rain, then you just get wet. Don't forget your tent. Also buy a tent that will fit the number of people you will be sleeping in it comfortably. Never go by what the instructions on the tent say. If it says it sleeps 4, it more than likely can only sleep 2. My rule of thumb is to add 2 to the number of people that will actually be using the tent. For example, if three people will be staying in the tent look for a tent that sleeps 5 or more. Usually the numbers come in even notation, i.e. sleeps 2, sleeps 4, sleeps 6 and so on.

Sleeping Bag
You could bring blankets from home and they will work fine, but a decent sleeping bag wraps you up and helps use your own body heat to do the trick. They are specifically made for outdoor use and a good one is worth its weight in gold. Unless you will be camping in extreme cold temperatures you can pick up a good one at any Wal-Mart, Target, Dick's Sporting Goods or where ever camping supplies are sold in your area.

Lantern
Back when I started camping with my dad there were two types of lanterns sold in stores, propane and gas (liquid). Today you have those same options but the battery powered ones are just as good, just as strong and last just as long. It really comes down to preference. I love using my Coleman propane lantern. It brings back memories of yester year and gives me that "I'm camping feeling".

Some might say what about a stove? I do own a propane stove and it works great, but if you are camping in a campground, chances are they are supplying you with a fire ring and the grate to cook on. Just fire up some wood and do all the cooking you want. I prefer cooking over the open flame. I think the food tastes better, and let's face it you aren't cooking over a fire ring at your home. Of course the downfall is you really can not regulate the heat as much when cooking in this manner so you have to keep a close eye on whatever it is you are making. Mmmmm, nothing like the smell of bacon cooking over the open flame first thing in the morning!

Happy Camping!

What's the best beach in Florida? Bets are on Sanibel!

Every year, Dr. Beach, aka Dr. Stephen Leatherman, Director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research issues his pronouncement of the best beaches in America. Generally, at least 3 of Florida's beaches make the list. The anticipation of the pronouncement is keen, to say the least.

But the popularity of announcing best beaches has gone much beyond the trend began by Dr. Leatherrman years ago.

There are pronouncers of best beaches sprouting up as quickly as beaches can be found.

The Travel Channel did a show not too long ago that had great visual appeal. Because it was a filmed feature and not reliant on still photography, the program really put Florida in a whole new light. The visuals were awesome and would make some question why they would ever leave the state of Florida to go to a beach anywhere else.

The show featured the top ten beaches in Florida and gave the reasons for why each was chosen to be on the list:

10 - Daytona Beach: activities and driving up and down the beach

9 - Sanibel Island (Gulf side): sea shell collecting

8 - Panama City: Spring Break

7 - Sandspur Beach (Bahia Honda): Nature preserve

6 - Smathers Beach (Key West): island-style

5 - Clearwater Beach: boating, even a pirate cruise

4 - Lover's Key Beach (outside Ft. Myers): seclusion/couples (Lover's Key Beach Club Resort)

3 - Palm Beach: living the high life, shopping (The Breakers Hotel)

2 - Siesta Key Beach: soft sand (Sand Sculpture Contest)

1 - South Beach (Miami): international scene (latin influence), winter fashion, non-stop nightlife

A life long beach lover and unofficial beach rater for many years and from many countries and continents, I would really have to question this rationale. I mean, seriously, would someone really go to a beach because they could drive their car up and down the beach?

I go to beaches to escape cars (and noise and traffic)!
Similarly, I don't need a beach to go to a beautiful hotel, go shopping, party or mingle with the rich and famous. Cities are made for scenes like this.

So, were I to toss out numbers 10, 8 and 1, it would only leave 7 top beaches in Florida, moving Sanibel into much higher ranking.....where it should be.

Why, you ask?

Well, Sanibel is great for shelling, one of the top 3 beaches in the world for that activity. Because the Gulf is generally calm, it is also great for boating. It is bordered by a nature preserve, so it is fantastic for nature viewing. There are many points of seclusion on Sanibel's beaches, including the popular Bowman's Beach near our condo and house where one can find privacy and romantic ambiance (try doing that on Siesta Key, as lovely as the sand is!)

Using as a more valid comparison the reasons I believe that most people seek out beaches---- nature, beauty, boating, seclusion---- Sanibel would more than likely win the race.

Tips to choose good quality bags for various purposes

This being the age of internet there are a number of websites that sell quality bags online. Some knowledge in judging the quality of a bag will help you in choosing the best bags for your needs. Especially while choosing duffle bags, or laptop backpacks or rolling backpack.

Duffle bag

Duffle bag is ideal when you need to stuff a lot of items in a one bag as you travel. The duffle bag is mostly made of nylon fabric and can expand to some extent. It works best if you have a lot of items. However, carrying formal clothes is not advisable as they may get wrinkled in the duffle bag.

Laptop backpack

Today laptop backpack is needed by office goers, college students, and even high school students. Luckily there are a variety of laptop backpacks available in the market specifically for this use. While purchasing a laptop backpack make sure that your laptop fits in and also check if the compartments have extra padding for protection.

Rolling backpack

While backpacks are a great way to carry a lot of things, no one would like to carry it all the time as it exhausts the most needed energy. Rolling Backpacks are the ideal solution for travelers of today. The modern rolling backpacks come in various shapes and sizes that meet every requirement of the travelers.

Well, to find the quality of these fabulous products on display, you need to check the following: fabric, handles, wheels, zippers & locks.

Fabric

When it comes to the fabric, most bags are made from nylon, leather, or polyester. If you choose nylon remember the higher the denier, the more rugged the bag will be. 2520 denier is said to be the most durable nylon. This is used for duffel bags and rolling backpacks. If you like to choose leather bags, look for the full-grain or top-grain as these are the sturdiest ones. When it comes to a leather laptop backpack, full-grain can provide the maximum protection to your gadget. Polyester is the least durable of the 3 fabrics used in the making of the bag. Like nylon, polyester also gets sturdier with the increase in denier of the fabric. Polyester bags are best suited for infrequent travelers.

Handles

Most bags are equipped with a push-button handle that locks in two positions. Check if the thermo plastic handles have rubberized grip for comfort, and also check if the handles can be extended further to make it comfortable while rolling the bag. However, most handles look very similar and the difference in the quality of handles can best be determined only by the reputation of the brand.

Wheels

Wheels of bags are usually made of rubber or thermo plastics. They are quiet and wear like iron. Wheels that are slightly recessed into the frame last for a longer period. Bags equipped with four 360 degree rotation wheels are best for multi-directional rolling.

Zippers & Locks

Always look for large and oversized zippers and pulls because they tend to be sturdier and are great for a firm grip. If you opt for nylon zippers, look for self-healing zippers that can be set right in case they separate due to internal pressure. Also look for bags with TSA-approved locks as it can relieve you of your worries during the air travel.

Lightweight Travel Trailers

Many people who want to add a small camper to their pick up truck discover that there are very few lightweight travel trailers to choose from. Weight is the problem not the variety of the RVs, since most of the existing recreational vehicles in the category are too heavy for a car or light pick-up truck to pull. A closer analysis of the market offer will show you that even the RV companies no matter if we are talking about rental companies or dealers have shown little interest in purchasing lightweight travel trailers. The reasoning for such a sales policy is very simple: these RVs are not that much in demand on the market, and therefore it is not profitable to keep them in stock.

The bathroom plumbing adds up quite a lot to the weight of the vehicle, particularly as the ceiling design has to be altered to. Therefore, some lightweight travel trailers have a rudimentary form of bathroom or lack it completely. Four types of vehicles fall in the category of lightweight travel trailers: the ultra-lightweights, the fiberglass eggs, the pop-up tent trailers and the teardrop ones. Each of the models has its advantage and downside: thus, the pop-ups are suitable for warmer climates, the fiberglass ones have a specific smell inside because of the materials they are made of, and the teardrops have offer pretty little space.

Lightweight travel vehicles of around 2,000 pounds could be the most convenient, but that very much depends on what the client aims at for both quality and use. In terms of size, the interior of lightweight travel trailers resembles a small or medium-sized bedroom in the most fortunate of cases, which is between 10 and 12 feet. This should be enough to accommodate a couple, but not for a family. Manufacturers provide the models ready furnished with basic appliances including a basic functional bathroom with or without a shower, a microwave and a stove.

The amenities included as well as the overall features of the vehicle determine the price for new and used lightweight travel trailers; the costs usually reach $10,000 or somewhere around this figure. The manufacturing year and the technical inspection remain key points to check when you want to purchase a used recreational vehicle. In the absence of a dealer in your local area, check online for more comprehensive resources. The databases you consult should be updated, otherwise you may be looking at items that are no longer in stock.

Printable Travel Games

Classic games like word puzzles, mazes, connect the dots and tic tac toe still have their group of fans even if console games and cell phone games make them seem obsolete. The above mentioned are also recognized as great travel games since parents find it a real challenge to keep their children's boredom away particularly when driving long distances. Various web pages represent the easiest source of printable travel games that can be included in the luggage for "boredom" sufferers, yet keep in mind the fact that kids with carsickness should be distracted in different ways, as any attempt to watch a fixed point when the car is moving will only aggravate the sickness.

There are web sites designed for the sole purpose of providing good quality printable travel games for family activities with preschoolers. You don't have to be an experienced parent to remember to pack some toys and favorite games to keep the children occupied when traveling by car or flying. To support the use of printable travel games make sure you take everything necessary for their playing: make sure to take crayons, markers and gel pens of varied colors and sizes. Moreover you can arrange the printable travel games into some plastic sheet protectors and use a three ring to bind them together so as to create a nice trip memory book.

Good printable travel games and coloring pages can be found on Crayola.com a site that provides printable activities and design patterns for all the geographical regions, thus, the kids can have fun playing with the various elements specific to one state you are going through or another. Quizzes just like simple coloring patterns such as birds, flags and flowers get a special meaning for the child who plays with them. One parent or an elder brother may have to look after the little ones and see to their game, but they will probably have time too.

There are all sorts of printable travel games created for older children, but every parent will appreciated whether one activity or another suits the child's age or not. You can even ask the kid's opinion and see what kind of games he/she prefers so that the contentment rate during the trip be as high as possible. The travel destination is also important for the selection of the printable travel games: if you are going to the seaside, then, ocean life coloring sheets will surely raise the child's interest and curiosity, and the same trick is true for trips in the mountains.

Eco Tourism in Panama

With the world's tourism leaning away from themed vacations, a new trend sees families traveling to jungles instead of Disney; taking cruises to Alaska instead of the Bahamas. This sect of tourism, aptly referred to as eco-tourism, flourishes in response to the times; as conservation consumes every aspect of our lives.

But this should come as no surprise. We have become so desensitized to the novelty of amusement parks-the flashing lights and loud noises-that we have reverted back to the basics. No longer do television audiences demand compelling dramas and convincing dialogue, but instead vicariously invest their lives into the lives of others. The number of active reality television programming now exceeds sitcoms. The lives we were once content with, we have outgrown and now we crave the intangibles; the streamlined cityscape of an overwhelming Japan; whale-watching among a sea of glaciers in Antarctica. The experiences that we once relied on television to provide for us, are now within reach and in demand.

Panama, like most countries with an eclectic array of remaining natural resources, are well aware of this recent surge. Hence commercials not for specific attractions, but for the locations themselves. Cancun will likely show clips of white beaches and romantic sunsets; Venice-gondolas streaming along Canal Grande. Panama, on the other hand, subscribes to the loose-adage "if you've got it, flaunt it." What the country happens to be in excess of is forest land.

Planning a vacation around a particular park in Panama is a very intimidating assignment, so it's best to, instead, construct it around a hotel or specific area of the country and from there, select a park relevant to where you are staying. This guide will help you take that final step toward completing your vacation planning.

La Amistad National Park - Covers 511,000 acres of mountainous terrain in the Cordillera de Talamanca Mountain range. The park is known for its cloud forests and display of 7 of Panama's 12 naturally occurring life zones.

Over 100 species of mammals, including primates like the howler monkey, black handed spider monkey, white throated capuchin and night monkey are found here. The park is also home to 5 species of cat including the puma and jaguar, 91 species of amphibians, and 61 species of reptiles.

The 3 towns nearest the park are Cerro Punta, Volcan in Chiriqui Province, and Changuinola in Bocas Del Toro; all providing transportation to La Amistad Park.

Bastimentos Island National Park - Encompasses 13,000 hectares of Bastimentos Island of the Zapatilla Cayes in Bocas Del Toro; composed of both land and ocean. A popular beach area of the park among tourists is Red Frog Beach, named for the red poison dart frogs that are native to the area. The park also opens its waters to snorkeling and diving, allowing visitors to experience unspoiled coral reef and over 200 species of fish.

Cerro Hoya National Park - Covers 80,500 acres in Los Santos and Veraguas and is about 215 miles from Panama City. The Park's terrain stretches from coastline to volcanic mountain. Although Cerro Hoya is one of the least explored parks in Panama, it is home to coral reefs, 95 species of bird and many large cats.

Chagres National Park - Located within Panama and Colon Province, covering 320,000 acres. The primary purpose of this forest is to protect water sources important to the Panama Canal and Panama City; however, does not close the park off to human interaction.

The park is comprised of steep mountain, lakes, rivers and tropical forests. While the park is home to a complicated ecosystem of plants and animals, it is also home to a tribe of Embera Indians.

Coiba National Park - Located within the western portion of Veraguas and consumes 667,000 acres of terrain. Because of its size, number of islands, and virginal beaches, Coiba is considered one of Panama's premier parks.

Thirty-six species of mammals have been recorded to live within the park, including 147 bird species, 69 fish species, and 39 amphibian species. Coiba Park is also the habitat to humpbacked whales, orca whales, pan tropical spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins.

Altos de Campana National Park - Comprised of approximately 39 species of mammals, 267 species of birds, 62 species of reptiles, and 82 species of amphibians. Altos de Campana is considered Panama's first national park and was established in 1966.

The park is mostly rugged terrain, leading to lava fields and El Valle Del Anton Volcano. As it is located in the western portion of the Panama province, about 1-1.5 hours West of Panama City, it is one of the closest national forests to many of Panama's resorts; including Melia Panama Canal and

To assume that Panama is one massive forest is understandable; much of the Panamanian land is coated in lush vegetation. However, the country is more than trees and wildlife and streamlets. Other branches of Eco-tourism reach the country in the forms of Smithsonian Institute research centers, the Camino Cruces Trail, the small fishing communities of Las Perlas, and the San Blas Islands. Whether a trend or something more, it is worth recognizing Panama, with all of its forestry and inhabiting animalia, as a country that truly feeds the world's ecological obsession.

Camping Tips

How to Choose a Summer Camp

Seems like everyone is opening up shop and calling themselves a camp these days.

Is the local Karate studio where your child takes Karate lessons but offers a summer program also a camp? Is your children's Art studio a camp?

However you define "summer camp," choosing the right one for your child can be a challenging and sometimes overwhelming task. The sheer number of available programs can make matching the ideal program to your child's interests, needs and personality seem daunting. Furthermore, as a parent, you have the responsiblity of ensuring the camp you choose for your child is operated in a safe and appropriate manner for your child's age and skill levels, and that it complys with all applicable laws and regulations.

The following is a camp selection checklist for parents to consider when considering summer camp opportunities for their kids:

1. Identify the camp's program emphasis.

Every camp has a different philosophy and program emphasis. Some camps promote structured group activities, while others give campers more individualized freedom to pick and choose the activities that appeal to them. Some camps offer strictly traditional activities, such as horseback riding and archery, while others may focus exclusively on sports, drama, or surfing. Perhaps your child would flourish in a competitive camp environment whereas another child would be better off taking part in non-competitive camp activities. By knowing your child's personality, interests, personality traits, and learning style, you can better identify the right camp for you.

2. Confirm that the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association.

In order to earn accreditation by the American Camp Association (ACA), camps must comply with up to 300 best-practice industry standards relating to camper health, safety and program matters important to a camp's operation. Less than 25% of all the camps in the United States have achieved ACA accreditation. If the camp you are considering isn't accredited, it's not necessarily a "bad" camp. But you should ask the camp director why it's not.

3. Ask about the camp director's background.

Camp directors must meet certian standards to actually be a camp director. To ensure that the camp director is qualified, make sure they meet the minimum standards set forth by the ACA. Such standards recommend that camp directors hold a bachelor's degree, have in-depth experience in camp administration, are at least 25 and performed in-service training during the last three years, among other considerations.

4. Camper-to-counselor ratios.

To make sure your child is getting the individual attention and supervision he or she needs for his or her age, compare the camp's counselor-to-camper ratio to ACA standards. For day camps, the general ratios range from 8:1 for 6, 7 and 8 year olds, to 10:1 for 9 to 14 year olds, and 12:1 for campers ages 15 to 17. For sleepaway camps, the general recommended ratio is 6:1 for 7 and 8 year olds, 8:1 for 9 to 14 year olds and 10:1 for campers ages 15 to 17.

(Please note, the above-cited child-to-counselor ratio standards are only ACA's general, MINIMUM recommendations and may vary depending on various situations and/or conditions. Moreover, there could be additional standards relating to specific programs and/or activities where more supervision may be prudent, if not required. Accordingly, you should use your own judgement and conduct your own research to decide what is appropriate for you and your child.)

5. Inquire about camp staff

Your child's counselors can make or break a their camp experience. In addition to facilitating camp activities safely, counselors should serve as role models and be dependable, trustworthy, and show enthusiasm for their role. For safety reasons, counselors should also be CPR and First Aid-Certified and have undergone criminal background checks prior to employment by the camp and be cleared through the Department of Justice's Child Abuse Registry.

6. Accommodation of special needs.

If your child has special needs due to an allergy or other medical condition, be sure to ask if the camp is equipped to handle these special requirements for your child.

7. Find out about how the camp handles discipline.

As in any organization, rules are needed, and the camp's disciplinary approach should be fair and openly communicated. Positive reinforcement, a sense of fair play and assertive role-modeling are important things to look for. If penalties apply to certain violations, camp staff should apply them fairly, calmly and without unnecessary criticism.

8. Check the camp's references.

References can provide you with a glimpse of the experiences others have had at a camp, and they are an important way of checking out a camp's track record and reputation. Before you choose a camp, the camp directors should be willing to provide references upon request.

Learn All Kinds Of Cool Stuff About Trees

Most of the people today prefer to live in cities where high-rise buildings, traffic lights, and busy streets are flourishing. But even if these modern architectures and technologies have already replaced the rich land and forests of long ago, it is still essential that there are trees or any kind of plant within the area. Trees and all plants are important for all humans and animals to survive in this planet.

All kinds of trees are known as perennial plants. When properly taken care of, it can live for at least 2 years or more. Unlike other kinds of plants, most of the trees can live for long years. There are even some trees that can live for more than 100 years. And there are also some trees that can actually live for at least a thousand years or even more.

Trees are woody plants that are made up of numerous branches which are supported by a single sturdy trunk. There are different kinds of trees and each has its own characteristics. They all differ in height, shape, sizes, and the appearance of the leaves of the trees as well. But according to the experts, before a woody plant can be considered as a tree, it must be at least 3 meters up to 6 meters high by the time it reached its maturity. Aside from that, the trunk diameter of the woody plant must also be at least 10 centimeters so that it can be one of the perennial woody plants. On the other hand, if it does not meet the said requirements yet the plant is still made up of several stems, it is then called as a shrub.

In order for humans and animals to breathe fresh air, there must be trees surrounding the area where they live in. It produces the amount of oxygen which is the primary element if you want to survive in this planet. Aside from that, the trees also play an important role in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide as well. With the help of the trees, the temperature of the ground will also be cooler at the same time.

This type of plant is one of the most essential components that make up the natural landscape. It can prevent the erosion of the land and protect the people from landslides. Other than being soil holders and great part of the agriculture industry, trees are also used in designing as well as adding aesthetic appeal at the same time.

There are five different branches of a tree namely the leaves, the twigs, the branches, the trunk, and the roots. The latter part of the tree is the one that serves as the anchor so that the earth can get hold of the plant. The root also is the one that is responsible for absorbing the nutrients and water from the soil. The leaves are the ones doing to all the carbon dioxide to oxygen conversion and the rest of the parts hold the leaves so that it can get the nourishments from the roots.

The James Bond of Derringers aka Bond Arms Cowboy Defender

Bond Arms firearms are some of the most trusted weapons for concealed carry holders across the country. These firearms are well-known for their historically inspired designs, which feel like pieces of history revamped to meet the needs of modern shooters. Bond Arms' secret to their success is the ability to quickly and seamlessly change barrels and calibers in a matter of seconds. These pocket, dual-shot handguns also can be comfortably carried or concealed without a hitch.

After shooting the Bond Arms Cowboy Defender, I was very impressed with the performance and quality of these derringer-style firearms. Unlike a wide range of other double barrel firearms this Bond Arms model fits your hand comfortably and is just as nice to look at as it is to shoot. The Cowboy Defender can be changed to a wide range of calibers by removing the pivoting pin, which opens to load and unload your pistol, and can be obtained for about the cost of other handgun barrels. The only tool required to change barrels is an Allen wrench, and can be done in seconds. These barrels come in a wide range of calibers, from 45 Long Colt to 22 Long Rifle; there is something for any and every type of shooter.

When testing the Bond Cowboy Defender 357 Magnum, I used 38 Special snake shot to get an idea of the practical use that many in the southwest might use these firearms for. After seeing the groups shot at a distance of around 10 yards, I was impressed with the ability to stop a snake or other animal you may not want to find with your foot in the desert. Since I was so impressed with the snake shot, I tried a few rounds of 357 Magnum to see if the Cowboy Defender was comfortable to shoot, unlike all the derringers I had experience with in magnum calibers. To my surprise, it was extremely comfortable to shoot.

Bond Arms' performance and comfort are credited to the weight, which offsets the recoil, and allows for better follow-up shots. One of the only problems I had with the Bond Arms gun was the ability to find a holster from a third-party manufacturer. Bond Arms makes their own line of holsters, but these holsters are on the less frugal side of the market. Otherwise, I see no draw back in the Bond Arms double barrel handgun. Bond Arms products are all simple designs that work in any conditions and hold about the same price range as any entry-level pistol.

Bond Arms handguns are great for concealed carry permit holders, as well as those hiking into potentially dangerous areas. I would feel confident that any of these firearms would serve well for those individuals who have to constantly patrol or walk through the desert on a regular basis. Bond Arms handguns might not be good for taking to the range and shooting a few hundred rounds; however, they are great as a personal protection weapon, offering a small amount of moving parts and cutting down the chance of potential failure.

Hiking in Wales - a Quick Guide to Snowdon

At 3560 feet or 1085 metres Yr Wyddfa - better known as Snowdon - is the highest mountain in Wales and one of the most popular hikes in Snowdonia. Many people simply take the mountain railway to the summit and some of those walk down but the hike to the summit is definitely more rewarding than the use of steam power! I have listed a choice of the best walking routes here.

The path from Llanberis is the easiest, as there is a wide track all the way up and no particularly steep or rough ground. The way is long though - 5 miles each way - and will always be busy in holiday periods. This route roughly follows the railway track up the western side of the mountain and you will encounter a large number of people walking down who have caught the train to the summit. You would be justified in a certain amount of smugness as you pass them! Good luck to them though - the train's a great ride.

If you drive along the A 4086 towards Betws y Coed, you will go through the spectacular Pass of Llanberis up to Pen y Pass at 1170 feet. This is the nearest point of access from the road to the summit and several routes leave from here. There is a charge for parking and there's often no room at busy times. The bus which circles the mountain in summer - check local tourist information for times - stops here and will save the frustration of not being able to park as well as allow you to admire the views on the way up.

From Pen y Pass the other 2 most popular routes begin. The Pyg Track leaves in roughly a westerly direction from the car park and the Miners Track through the gate at the southern side. These tracks meet up about half way to the summit so it's only their early stages that differ. The Pyg Track is the most direct path to Snowdon and much rougher, gaining height all the way, while the Miners Track is a wide track which meanders past the mountain lake Llyn Llydaw, itself hiodden from Pen y Pass. I have pushed a child's buggy along the Miners Track as far as Llyn Llydaw so if you want easy access to spectacular views of Snowdon's rugged east face then this is a rewarding but easy walk. Beyond the lake though, it steepens to the mountain tarn of Glaslyn before climbing very rough slopes to rejoin the Pyg Track. The upper sections of both routes climb a series of stone steps to a col between snowdon and Crib y Ddysgl before joining the route from Llanberis up the last bit to the summit.

I'll mention the Crib Goch route here. This route branches off the Pyg Track near where it crosses a small ridge above Pen y Pass. The route ascends the steep slopes of Crib Goch - the prominent pointed peak directly above Pen y Pass - and crosses a narrow and exposed arete followed by steep scrambles up over Crib y Ddysgl to join the previous routes. This route is only for experienced walkers who have a head for heights! Either way it is dangerous in strong winds or icy conditions.

Now we'll head to the south side of the mountain and 3 much less busy routes; From Bethania just south of Llyn Gwynant on the A498 the Watkin Path climbs past waterfalls into Cwm Llan before making a steep and winding ascent of Snowdon. The path is steep in its upper reaches but is without undue difficulty.

On past Beddgelert on the A4085 and the Rhyd Ddu Path leads from an idyllic valley up through some wild looking country before ascending the ridge called Bwlch Main to the summit. If you follow the crest there's slight exposure here but it's nothing like Crib Goch and you can keep to the path just below it. The other route from this side is the Snowdon Ranger Path which leaves from just behind the Snowdon Ranger Youth Hostel just down the valley from Rhyd Ddu. This is again a quiet way to climb Snowdon, leading through open country before ascending a broad ridge to the summit.

My own favorite is to go up the Rhyd Ddu path and down the Snowdon Ranger. That way you will avoid the crowds almost all the way and see some of the best scenery in Wales.
