Outside the cat is snuggled up inside his box in the garage. He's able to go outside if he wants, through the pet door which I have opened up again. A family of raccoons decided to move in with him and until they found a new home, I had to board up the pet door.

I'm keeping warm tonight by making plans for my summer vacation. I'm going to a warm and sunny beach on northern Florida's Gulf Coast. Having visited the Apalachicola area before, I've decided that that's where I'm going again! Since the last time I was there, I've done more research on the area and discovered that I missed a lot of things simply because I didn't do my homework before I arrived. This time I've made a list of some of the things I want to do when I get there this spring.

The first thing on my calendar when I get to the bay is to go oystering. I'm going to book a four hour trip with one of the guides who make his living harvesting oysters. I didn't make the trip any longer than 4 hours because after reading about the oystermen, who are called 'tongers', I don't believe my aching body would last more than a few hours. At that I may be pushing the limits of my endurance!

Charters will take 2-4 people with them at a time. That's about all the 20-24 foot boat will safely hold. The boat will have a culling board so you can sort the oysters according to size when you haul them aboard. The guide from whom I booked the charter says culling is not as easy as it sounds, but by the end of the tour I'll probably be an expert.

From what I have seen by watching oystermen from the shore, tonging looks like hard work. This is the way many of their fathers and grandfathers harvested oysters many years ago. They use a tool called 'tongs' that look like a heavy steel rake with long wooden handles that operate a little like a post hole digger. Sometimes the oyster beds are in 5-10 feet of water so the tonger has to be able to reach that far down.
This certainly sounds like work to me, but I want to take a shot at it.

Another item on my 'to do' list when I reach the Apalachicola area is to go to the St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge. It's a barrier island, providing natural protection for the mainland from damaging winds and waves. You can only reach this northwestern Florida Gulf Coast island by boat. One of the great things about this place is that there are no human inhabitants. There are caretakers who live on the island sometimes and keep the place as natural as possible.

This island, with its marshes on the bay side of the island, is home for many specie of animals including Sambar deer, white tail-deer, alligators, loggerhead sea turtles, raccoons, ospreys, and bald eagles. Threatened or endangered bald eagles, sea turtles and the red wolf, enjoy life of the island. My wife is not as thrilled as I about going to an island that has neither souvineer shops nor restaurants, but to me this sounds like paradise. Spending the day fishing on the gulf side of the island and picking up shells that haven't been picked over by others is my idea of a relaxing vacation.

One of the brochures I've read boasts that as many as 2400 visitors boat to the island and walk the beach each year. Can you imagine? There are 2400 people on most Florida beaches each day! The island remains primitive and pristine because visitors to the island take care and clean up after themselves as they should on every beach.

These are my two must see trips I'll put on my calendar for this summer, but no vacation would be complete without dining out at local restaurants. The last time I was on St. George Island which is one of the four barrier islands protecting the mainland, there were two restaurants. All I can say is that one was wonderful, the way a seafood restaurant should be when you're on an island. The other one wasn't great. I would not recommend that one!

It doesn't take much to make me happy. Just give me a couple of brochures about fishing and eating and I'm happy. With each day getting a little longer than the one before, I know it's getting closer to vacation time!

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Fishing--Oysters--Alligators-and-Me-/780355
boating equipment

Following Hidden Trails

I am a follower of hidden trails. In fact, on at least half of the hiking trips I take lately, I'm off the trails altogether, bushwhacking into the unknown. What do you get for doing as Walt Whitman suggested, and taking the "road less traveled?" A bit of adventure. Here are some of the things myself and a friend or two have discovered off the beaten path in the last year.

Old Mines - We have run across at least fifteen abandoned and sometimes hidden mines, many of them far from any trail. One had a mystery involved, with a possible death (although the police seemed to have no interest) based on the clothes and unopened food left at a nearby campsite. Another went a thousand feet into a mountainside, and had a rotting photo of someone at the back, in a hole in the wall that appeared to be a shrine of some sort. Another ended at a vertical shaft which we could not see to the bottom of with our flashlights.

Old Houses and Towns - A couple months ago we lost the trail we were on and instead started to follow a dry wash. Twenty minutes from the car we came upon what looked like a ghost town. Upon closer inspection we discovered that it was an old ranch, with about six or seven buildings and three old cars from the fifties. After poking through the main house for a while (there was still a wood stove and a chair or two), we headed up the little creek that ran through the property.

Caves - Up the stream from that old ranch, I saw a spring coming out from under a large limestone rock. I knew this made caves in the nearby cliffs likely. Sure enough, five minutes later we were 100 feet into the hillside, looking through a narrow opening and wondering what we might find further inside the cave. I went back later and explored the system for over an hour.

Natural Oddities - In addition to the waterfalls and fantastic rock formations that we find whenever we follow hidden trails and canyon-bottoms, we are sometimes surprised. Ten miles south of the town of Fairplay (all of these examples are from Colorado), we stumbled upon a stream that came gushing straight out of a grassy hillside. We will likely return to see if there is any way to access the caves that the underground stream undoubtedly has carved uphill from there.

Rocks And Minerals - In addition to possible flecks of gold in the bottom of my gold pan (it's hard to tell for sure), I am always finding crystals, rocks and interesting minerals. In the spring of 2008 a friend and I became somewhat lost on the backside of a mountain, after climbing to the top to check out a cave or mine we saw. At some point we discovered boulders of quartz and followed them up the hillside. We came to an incredible fifteen-foot-high wall of white quartz, laced with veins of transparent/translucent mica. The wall had resulted from a miner blowing open the side of the mountain many years earlier. Since gold is often found with quartz, we may return.

Today (12/30/08), before writing this, I hiked a couple miles up a canyon near where we live. I try to take advantage of these occasional December days in the 60s. Trudging through the snow in my t-shirt, I eventually came to the end of my road-less-traveled, after it passed by an old mining building. From there I followed barely visible trails created by deer and elk through the scrub oak. At the top of a rocky (and dry) hill, I found an old camp site, with old tin cans from who-knows when. The day after tomorrow I may start the new year by hiking another hidden trail I've been meaning to explore.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Following-Hidden-Trails/778999
Tips for traveling

Experience the Great Outdoors by Camping on Sanibel

As part of an online Vacation Rental Owners discussion group, I frequently answer questions about Sanibel. Most of the time, I know the answers to the questions.

But last week one of the group participants asked me a question that I could not answer.

She inquired whether the campground on Sanibel Island still existed, an experience that she enjoyed many years ago.

Since camping is not in my nature, prefering the comfort of a condo or spaciousness of a home when on vacation, I had never noticed that Sanibel does have a campground.

In fact, The Periwinkle Trailer Park and Campground is a great place to camp out. Doing a little reading about it, I could see where someone who is inclined to camp would find great appeal in this campground.

This is apparently a well known campground which includes full hookups for recreation vehicles, sites for motorhomes, pop up campers and tent sites. There are facilities on site for hot showers, restrooms, laundry, picnic tables, ice, LP gas and a pavilion to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. If you travel with a recreational vehicle the campground offers complete electrical, water and sewer hookups. The tent sites are secluded and are available with shaded areas.

This Sanibel Island camping ground has long been considered a bird lover's paradise mainly for the reason that Periwinkle Trailer Park and Campground features a number of species of exotic and native birds such as toucans and macaws.

They also have brown and ringtail lemurs there for the looking but not touching.

For those who are seeking an encounter with nature, The Periwinkle Campground may be your spot in Paradise.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Experience-the-Great-Outdoors-by-Camping-on-Sanibel/778384
Vacation planning

Winter Hiking Done Safely With 5 Rules

For novice and avid summer hikers alike, the winter hiking season does not need to be feared or avoided. It should however be respected. The precautions a hiker should take when hiking in winter conditions are similar to those they should in the summer, with only some minor variations to account for the weather and potential changes in weather.

Below are the five keys to being a safe winter hiker.

Be Conscious of the Weather
If you are planning a hike, check the local weather forecast for your destination area throughout the week prior in order to better understand the current weather patterns and temperatures. Make very sure to check the forecast on the day of your hike and take note of the expected weather and temperatures for the day of the hike as well as a day or two past. Also, it is best to understand how those weather conditions change or are modified as your elevation changes in the area. Never plan a hike when the conditions are expected to be harsh and unnavigable.

Even the best laid plans can be thwarted by the weather. It is best to be prepared for the worst weather should it unexpectedly sneak up on you. The following tips will ensure you are prepared should such arise.

Layers. Layers. Layers
When you're hiking, increased blood circulation will keep your body warm but when you stop, the temperature will quickly catch up with your body. It is therefore important to wear multiple layers of clothes so that you can add and remove clothes without putting yourself at risk of hypothermia or overheating. Choose hiking clothes that made of breathable fabrics and that do not absorb water or moisture. Cotton is a particularly bad material for winter hiking clothes because it absorbs sweat, rapidly cooling the body and keeping it that way.

Essential Gear
There are a few equipment items you should never hike without. Stock a comfortable backpack or waist-pack with these essentials:
- Water: You simply cannot survive without it.
- A few energy rich snacks. Trail mix, protein bars, nuts and dried berries work well.
- A flashlight, headlamp, or lantern. A light will help you signal for help, find your way to a path or stream and just add some needed moral should you be stuck over night.
- Small first-aid kit with an emergency blanket and whistle
- Map and compass (see below)
- Cell Phone: Not all areas will be accessible by cell phone so do not rely on this solely but do carry it in case of emergencies
- Knife, pocket knife, or multi-tool. A knife, coupled with the many functions of a mutli-tool is invaluable for cutting branches for a fire and protecting yourself

Have A Plan
Never go hiking without a clear plan for where you plan to go and when you plan to return. Include in your plan where you need to be by a certain time in order to make it back or to your intended destination before nightfall. You should always tell someone your planned route and the estimated times of departure and return. Use your map of the area and compass throughout the day to make sure you are following your intended route, especially if the weather begins to worsen.

Have a Friend
It is never advisable to winter hike alone. Not only is hiking with others far more fun, it is also much safer. By hiking with another, you can share the responsibilities of carrying supplies and monitoring your hiking route. Should you fall or become ill, you will have someone with you who can call or get help.

Don't let the winter keep you caged in. If you love to hike or explore nature, consider planning a winter hike with your friends. By following these five steps, you will be well on your way to a safe and fun outdoor adventure.

~Richard McNeal, 2009

Richard McNeal lives in the Northwest and writes for Discount Lights and Knives.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Winter-Hiking-Done-Safely-With-5-Rules/777830
Outdoor Adventures

Emergency Tube Tent: A Must-Have for All Outdoor Enthusiasts

While there are more luxurious and spacious kinds of tents available in the market, emergency tube tents tend to be the favorite of campers and other outdoor enthusiasts because of their quick, no-hassle setup.

Advantages of Using an Emergency Tube Tent

Compact
Emergency tube tents are commonly used for outdoor trips and as such, they come in compact designs to take up as little space as possible in your camping gear. Unlike other types of tents, they don't require you to bring several poles with you for setup. All you need to do is find the ideal location, one where you can tie the nylon rope (included in your emergency tube tent kit) from one end to another, insert the rope through the tube attached to the tent and voila! You've got you're A-shaped tent up and ready to use.

Reusable
Not infinitely, but it will definitely last for several trips. As such, you need not worry about having to take with you several emergency tube tent kits for a three-night camping trip this summer. One would do very well already.

Lightweight
Emergency tube tents are not only compact but lightweight as well due to the materials used for making them. You can put it inside your backpack and it won't make a difference.

Safe
First and foremost, emergency tube tents are fireproof and fire-retardant. This is an excellent safety feature when you're battling the forces of nature and lightning's striking close by. Emergency tube tents are also weatherproof: neither water nor wind will be able to prevent you from having a good night's sleep.

Be aware, however, that emergency tube tents are designed to have their sides opened. If you want those ends covered, you'll have to use clothesline pins to keep them closed securely throughout the night.

Shopping Tips for Emergency Tube Tents

Size
Some emergency tube tents can only accommodate one person plus gear while others are large enough to accommodate two persons. It's best to take this up with your camping partners and base your purchase on your sleeping arrangements.

Thickness of Material
Some emergency tube tents are only 1.5 to 2 millimeters thick. That's more than enough to protect you from adverse weather, but it might not be enough to prevent accidental tears. For greater durability, try looking for emergency tube tents made of thicker materials.

Color
Lastly, choose a bright shade for your emergency tube tent so that you're easily seen at night. Having a highly visible shade for your tent will also make it advantageous to use as a signal if you're lost or you wish to make contact with other campers from a distance.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Emergency-Tube-Tent--A-Must-Have-for-All-Outdoor-Enthusiasts/777816
Vacation planning

Swinger Travel - A getaway for sexually explicit couples

The swinger lifestyle has caught the fantasy of several married and unmarried couples. It is a very popular way to explore your sexuality to the hilt. Generally, these lifestyle parties are arranged by swinger clubs and groups, who wish to spend a highly erotic evening or a day with their swinger friends. Some people also organize a home swinger party for a certain group of friends.

However, there's slight difference between a swinger party being organized by a club and one planned at the home. The club swinger parties are attended by club members only. These members have official passes or invitations to join the party. Moreover, the clubs can organize swinger activities inside the premises or outside the premises. The club provides you with a large number of options, since you can meet several swinger couples and choose the one that can understand your swinger desires.

However, a swinger home party has limited gathering. These parties are conducted by people who wish to indulge into private and confidential sexual pleasures. Moreover, the party will consist of people with similar interest and desires. You can also call your online swinger friends to your home party and enjoy various activities like homosexuality, polygamy, wife swapping, exhibitionism etc.

Moreover, you should be properly dressed at the swinger parties. Most of the swinger parties have a certain theme to add fun to the event. However, if there's no theme, then you can dress according to the occasion and mesmerize other swinger couples. You should wear something trendy so that you can catch attention of other swingers. If you are a woman then you can wear sexy attire, while men can go for a classy look.

Hence, if you are a swinging couple then plans an erotic evening at the swinger parties and get ready for lots of adult fun.

About The Author:- John Lewis is a renowned writer who has been writing articles on the lifestyle needs of people. Officials have announced that they expect the Gulf State Park Pier to be ready in May, just in time for summer visitors.

The pier's completion has been a long time coming, but that somehow seems suitable because the pier is long -- at 1,512 feet, it will be the longest in the Gulf of Mexico. It will be 20 feet wide and 20 feet high and will be outfitted for the comforts of outdoorsmen of all ages and ability levels.

The new pier is at 20800 E. Beach Blvd. in Gulf Shores. When it is completed, it will have two restroom facilities, a tackle shop and a concession stand with dining facilities inside and out. The entire structure is American with Disabilities Act-compliant, and it features special railings designed so anglers in wheelchairs can pull up and have a place to set their tackleboxes, bait and other items at lap-level or higher rather than having to reach down to the ground.

A 65-foot octagon over the coast's second sand bar will offer prime fishing for cobia, king mackerel and tarpon, information from the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau states. Artificial reefs will be added to bring in more fish and will be accessible by boat. Some plans call for the remnants of the old pier to be used in creating the artificial reefs, but permitting issues have yet to be decided.

Built in 1968, the original pier was a fixture of the Alabama Gulf Coast until it became a casualty of Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Local and state officials took the opportunity provided by Ivan to overhaul a significant portion of Gulf State Park, updating and modernizing where possible, tearing down and rebuilding elsewhere.

When officials realized a facelift to the aging pier would be as expensive as a new pier, they opted for a modern replacement. State-of-the-art engineering has enabled designers to create a structure expected to withstand a Category 3 hurricane. The design also is expected to dramatically reduce the time needed to made repairs after storm damage occurs because the damage should be mostly cosmetic and not structural.

Safety is important, but anglers and others who will be using the new pier want to be able to appreciate its amenities. These include its size, as it is several hundred feet longer than its predecessor and is more than twice as wide across the octagon. The additional length is especially important on days when the Gulf is rough, because anglers can cast into deeper, clearer water where fish still will be swimming -- and biting. Local fishermen expect the additional territory to yield excellent results for highly desirable species of fish. At least one local expert has said he expects the new pier's size alone to be responsible for double the number of good days of fishing. It also is higher above the water.

Picnic tables will be a welcome "site" for those who want to take advantage of the view and the warm breezes of the Gulf of Mexico, but the snack bar will have air-conditioned seating for those who come hungry, empty-handed and looking for a respite from the sun.

Alabama requires anglers to be licensed for fishing, and those licenses will be available at the pier alongside bait, tackle and other necessities.

Not everyone who uses the pier will be there for the fishing. Some will come to enjoy the sun or to watch for wildlife. Locals have reported seeing all types of marine life from the old pier, including whales and manatees.

State and local officials visited several popular piers in the region as plans for the new Gulf State Park Pier were crafted. Having new safety and comfort features plus the best options other locales have to offer makes Gulf State Park truly a "keeper."

If you're ready to fish AND cut bait, visit www.thebeachiscalling.org to book accommodations, schedule excursions and use the Travel Tools to make planning your visit to the Alabama Gulf Coast a breeze. Carol Weaver is looking forward to visiting the new and improved Gulf State Park Pier when it reopens. She has fond memories of fishing there on family vacations.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Gulf-State-Park-Pier-expected-to-open-by-summer/774444
Camping Tips

Skiing...enjoy it whilst it lasts

At first glance the evidence is irrefutable, global warming is starting to have an affect on ski resorts. Any ski resort that is at a lower altitude than its neighbours, particularly in the Alps will bear the brunt of this phenomenon.

The doomsday merchants would have us believe that skiing will be a thing of the past and will be an activity confined to the extreme ski/boarding thrill seekers. If this prediction was to manifest itself then winter sports holidays would become the preserve of the wealthy.

Research by the United Nations Environment Programme predicts that more than half of resorts in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria could face bankruptcy over the next 50 years as the snow line rises.

Admittedly a few years ago it seemed that the skiing apocalypse had been visited upon us and the peddlers of doom had been right. The pistes were a patchwork of mud, grass with a sprinkling of snow.

Yet all indications are that this ski season has seen the best dumps of snow in a generation over Europe, Canada and the US. The global financial crisis couldn't have come at a worse time for skiing and boarding devotees. To ski or not to ski? It appears that skiers are not being put off by the financial crisis. The hardcore ski/boarding fan wants to take advantage of the fantastic dumps and hang the financial consequences. This is perhaps their attempt to laugh in the faces of the climate experts.

The evidence is scientifically conclusive and with the proliferation of snow cannons in many of the Alpine resorts the snow line is clearly retreating. Many of the lower resorts will have to revaluate their winter sports options over the coming decade and start to diversify.

For the skier and snowboarder there have never been so many choices of winter sports holidays. For those that can book last minute there are plenty of bargains to be had. So don't let the climatologists spoil your fun, book a winter sports holiday and get on the piste.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Skiing---enjoy-it-whilst-it-lasts/774025
Travel Tips

Quick, Painless and Easy Camping Recipes

Camping now and then is good for you. The fresh air, the sky, the stars, and the trees are great breaks from the urban jungle that we live in. However, even though camping is a great activity it does pull you away with the technology that makes life a little convenient. The heater, the air-conditioning, the stove, etc. cannot be carried in a backpack. And as a result, you will have to contend with what you have with regards various activities like sleeping and cooking. However, camping does not mean you have to be tied with bland dishes. You can have a scrumptious meal with a few quick, painless camping recipes.

Some of the basic meals you can prepare during a camping trip include hard boiled eggs and bacon for breakfast. Fish or chicken partnered with some boiled potatoes for lunch or dinner would be a nice treat as well.

The key for camping recipes is simplification. You can get your favorite meal then get the core ingredients, think of how you can transport the ingredients in the smallest available storage space and you're ready to go. Camp meals are all about how much you can carry comfortably in your backpack.. You're not going to cook inside the convenience of your kitchen. But rather, you will be working outside, on the grass and using firewood or charcoal. With this in mind it would be best to keep your recipes simple. Make something that you will just have to place on a skillet or frying pan all the necessary ingredients and let it cook.

For example, you can add some flavor and zing to your bacon if you add some onions, salt and pepper and add milk and eggs. That may sound a bit weird but it tastes pretty good. Add potatoes or mushrooms (or both) for a fuller meal and you'll have a hearty breakfast that will keep you pumped up until lunch.

When you plan to cook fish over an open camp fire, you might want to remember packing aluminum foil with you. The foil will help protect the fish from being burned. Camp fires, when you're not used to it are not as easy to control as a burner stove where high, medium, and low heat can be set with a dial of a knob. Before you wrap your fish in foil, you can add some onions, pepper, and even garlic inside it to add flavor. If you have some lemon with you squeeze some on the fish. Remember to pack the aluminum foil and other non-biodegradable trash for that matter back with you if you don't see any trash cans at your camp site.

Grilling is a good way to cook over a camp fire and a good way to interact with your family as well. It is a social activity during a camping trip that both the kids and adults seem to enjoy. You can grill hotdogs or roast marshmallows over the camp fire. But what you can also do is pack some sausages with you and grill them for dinner. Pack some buns and ketchup and mustard as well. Go with pre-cooked sausages. You will spend less time cooking them on the grill, since you're basically just heating them.

A quick, painless camping recipe involves being prepared beforehand. When you bring your food with you during a camping trip, it is best, of course, to prepare them before hand for faster cooking. For example, if you are bringing vegetables make sure they have been cleaned and cut to the desired sizes.

This way you will have more time enjoying the food rather than preparing and cooking them.

About the author
Overwhelmed and confused about how to take off weight and lose the belly fat for greater stomach loss.Don't be,Click here for FREE Weight Loss Information

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Quick--Painless-and-Easy-Camping-Recipes/772615
Airport information

The Wood Gasifier and Camp Stove Gasifiers

Gasification in outdoor wood furnaces or what we also call wood gasifiers or camp stove gasifiers is being practiced and developed rapidly. It is a whole new way of burning wood. One developer rightly calls it the Green furnace.

These are starting to come on sale as great green and sustainable products that reduce use on fossil fuels while being environmentally friendly. Camp stove gasifiers or wood furnaces create less smoke, use less wood while creating more heat.

Gasification is a process for burning wood where the gases from the wood are burned at very high temperatures. Downdraft produces extreme heat up to 2000 degrees igniting all gases including smoke and creosote therefore giving almost 100% efficiency. It is almost too good to be true!

Combustion of wood gas generates no particulates and the gas thus renders very little carbon black (soot). Combustion of the gases starts in the combustion tube assembly where the temperature of the gas is increased to promote thermal cracking of tars and hydrocarbons that were liberated during gasification. Partial combustion of gas in the combustion tube assembly, automatic continuous ash discharge and precise control of the zoning of the gasification air produces a clean, low Btu content gas that can be burned in the combustion tube and chamber for drying applications or in the radiant section of the boiler or stove.

Camp Stove Gasifiers are also called Wood-gas cooking stoves and are perhaps the best answer so far. These are gasifiers that produce gas from wood and then burn the gas, leaving ash and charcoal. Wood gas are nturaly the cheaper to run by all means, but charcoal gasifiers are much easier to handle.

Wood or sometimes other biomass is fed into gasifier at regular intervals. The equipment is designed in such a way that it takes air in controlled quantities, resulting in partial oxidation of biomass into producer gas. As the biomass is fed to the gasifier, it is converted into gas and char (carbonaceous matter) sometimes aso being catalyzed (ge by clay) under the presence of what is effectively steam. As the char is accumulated on the surface of the clay catalyst, the catalyst is deactivated.

Eventually, all the biomass particles transform into syngas, and the wood is gasified. Eventually, the developers of simple gasifier stove technology hope to create the possibility of converting many forms of non-edible biomass other than wood, prunings, straw, grass) into this wonderfully useful and efficient Green Gas with an efficiency of 70%. Subsequently, the Green Gas can be cleaned and pressurized and added to the natural gas network and be used as natural gas for many applications, such as heating, transport, chemical industry and electricity production.

Fuel gases can also be cleaned and then burned in internal combustion engines for the generation of electricity and process heat.

Gasification in-situ with energy production or pyrolysis of the above mentioned residues, under a non-oxidizing atmosphere for alternative fuels production could be a solution to the environmental problems that land filling or conventional combustion could create.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/The-Wood-Gasifier-and-Camp-Stove-Gasifiers/765917
Cheap cruises

Oklahoma City Lakes

The Oklahoma City lakes prove Oklahoma City entertainment options aren't all brick and mortar. The three major reservoirs of the city, Lake Hefner, Lake Draper and Lake Overholser, offer opportunities for many outdoor activities and provide drinking water to the city.

Built in 1947, the 2,500 acre Lake Hefner in northwest Oklahoma City, with an average depth of 29 feet and maximum depth of approximately 94 feet, provides sailing, picnicking, recreation and fishing options. The lake is known for the sailboat races held on weekends. On the banks of the lake are the Lake Hefner Golf Course, playgrounds, jogging and biking trails, and the Stars and Stripes Park that hosts team sports, biking, recreational events and the annual Turkey Trot Classic. Kite flying is also a popular recreational activity here.

Lake Stanley Draper in southeast Oklahoma is a 2,900 acre lake with an average depth of 34 feet and maximum depth of 98 feet, and the largest of Oklahoma City's lakes. It features boat ramps, covered fishing piers, tending docks, fish attractors, handicap facilities, covered wet slips and dry storage areas. While swimming is prohibited, activities including picnicking, fishing, jet skiing, boating, sailing, and skiing (allowed only in open waters) can be enjoyed. On the west side of the lake is the Crosstimbers ORV Park.

Lake Overholser is the oldest and smallest of the reservoirs, connected to Hefner Lake through a canal. This 1,500 acre lake has an average depth of 6 feet with maximum depth of 13 feet. The lake was built in 1919 in order to support a treatment plant. The Overholser Dam at the southeast corner of the lake was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Picnicking, fishing, sailing, boating and jet skiing are the activities permitted here, while swimming is prohibited.

If an escape from the urban is what you seek, the Oklahoma City lakes are the place to head to, and OKC hotels would be glad to offer shuttle services to these locations.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Oklahoma-City-Lakes/768484
Tips for traveling

Keeping the Kids Entertained Whilst Camping in France

Come summer time, camping in France is one of the most popular holiday options for families in the UK. Thousands of families flock across the channel each year, taking advantage of the sunny weather, regional attractions and the many well provisioned campsites in France.

There's nothing better than a family holiday when it everything goes well but when the children squabble and become bored, the parents start to get stressed, and everyone returns home far less relaxed than when they started! If you want to enjoy a fun and (almost!) stress free French camping holiday, here are a few tips on how to plan your trip...

Choose Your Region

There are attractions to be found in every part of France, but it is best to choose one that ties in with your mutual interests as a family. If your children are fans of the great outdoors, a camping holiday in the French Alps or the Jura will place you in amongst some of the most spectacular woods and mountains in France. Beach lovers should head to the Cote d'Azur or to the Vendee, the two best stretches of coast in the country. While if fine food and high culture are what keep you entertained, Brittany and the Loire may be the best choices, or perhaps a campsite near Paris. Each region has its own individual character - make sure you choose the right one for you (and your kids!)

Pick Your Campsite Carefully

It pays to choose your campsite in France with care - different campsites offer very different facilities and holiday experiences. More lively campsites can be perfect if you've got older children and like a few late nights out, but can be too loud and crowded for smaller children. Equally, a quieter campsite may leave older kids bored stiff!

Having the right facilities can make or break a holiday, especially when it comes to kid's clubs - many of the larger campsites in France have dedicated children's clubs that can be great for keeping the kids entertained (and out of your hair for a few hours!) Read up on any prospective campsites carefully, and make sure it has everything you and your family needs.

Research the Local Attractions

Once you've selected a specific region and an individual campsite in France, research the attractions in the local area. Children's interests can change from day to day, and it is good to have a range of options researched and available - if the family is in the mood for some fun family entertainment, a theme park like Disneyland Paris can be ideal. If it is culture you are after, a visit to Mont St Michel or the Loire Chateaux may be in order. For a great family day trip you can suggest a visit to fun resort towns such as Nice and Les Sables d'Olonne.
Of course, it is essential that you read up on the finer details of opening times or prices - it is no fun driving for hours to reach an attraction only to discover that it is closed, booked out, or prohibitively expensive! But so long as you have a good range of days out and local attractions thoroughly researched before you go, you'll never want for something to do whilst camping in France.
All very basic advice, but the key to a really great French camping holiday amounts to little more than thorough research and careful preparation - follow these simple steps, and you'll be all set for a truly outstanding holiday experience!

Lorraine Waddell is the brand and advertising manager of Canvas Holidays. With over 40 years of experience, Canvas offer superb options for camping in France as well as trips to Italy, Spain and a total of 9 European countries.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Keeping-the-Kids-Entertained-Whilst-Camping-in-France/767595
Vacation planning

Dolphin Cruise: an Adventure Guide

Among the most magnificent creatures in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico are dolphins. Seemingly curious about humans, dolphins are seen as friendly and playful. Sailors and fishermen alike consider them harbingers of good luck.

Visitors to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are increasingly enamoured with dolphins, and local skippers and captains are happy to oblige by offering dolphin cruises.

Cruises vary in duration, cost, time of day, size of vessel -- there are almost as many different ways to plan a cruise as there are people to enjoy them.
The Gulf of Mexico is home to bottlenose dolphin, which usually live in groups of two to 20. Each one can grow to about 10 feet long and can weigh from 400 to 600 pounds. They often are seen swimming beside vessels being used for fishing, shrimping or harvesting other sea delicacies, and their acrobatic skills delight observers on land and sea.

Visitors who want to learn about nature, habitats and wildlife of all types might consider a tour that includes but does not necessarily focus on dolphins. Several of these are offered, and some include nature and beach walks as well as cruises.

For those of single-minded "porpoise," tours in glass-bottom dolphin cruise boats might be the way to go. Swimming with dolphins is not allowed in Alabama, so watching them swim and frolic is the next best thing.

Family-oriented cruises lasting from 90 minutes to three hours are offered most days. Many allow visitors to bring along coolers and picnic baskets, making them affordable options for those watching their budgets.

Those who want a little romance might consider dolphin cruises aboard vessels that offer moonlight trips and dinner. Some are set aboard vessels reminiscent of eras gone by, while others are on boats equipped with all the modern amenities. One such schooner features dining on fresh catch from nets the crew hauls in as hungry dolphin swim, jump and splash about, looking for a treat.

There is even a female captain ready to take visitors out to enjoy these marvelous creatures. Most tour operators offer narrated excursions to help their guests get the most from their adventure.

Operators depart from various parts of the Alabama Gulf Coast, including Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. They visit the Intracoastal Waterway, Wolf Bay, Longs Bayou.

Days and hours of operation are seasonal, and reservation policies range from a day or two up to about a week. Nearly all cruise providers offer the option of private excursions for all types of events, from children's birthday parties to weddings.

Those who might consider planning their trip around the dolphin-watching excursion should be on the lookout for special accommodations packages that include lodging and tour fare.

Contact information for dolphin cruise operators can be found under the "Things to Do" menu at www.thebeachiscalling.org. Look under Attractions and follow the link for "Dolphin and Dinner Cruises." What's good is that you need not scrimp on your budget, or let your financial woes put a damper on your hunger for more adventure. All you need is to do some research, find the best and exciting adventure destinations in your own backyard, and bring the essential outdoor equipment with you.

For those who are at a loss as to finding the best outdoor adventure travel destination or alternative, you could consider dropping by your local tourism bureau or travel shop. You'll probably be surprised at the many options available in your locale, so it would be great to check out the adventure travel options in your place first. In addition, don't forget to bring the necessary outdoor travel gear with you. Here are a few of the items that you must have before heading out into the wilderness, valley, or mountain top.

Tents: Today, there are different kinds of tents that are available for weekend campers, die-hard mountain climbing freaks, seasonal adventurers and others. In buying a tent, ensure that you buy one that is durable and long-lasting. It may offend the first-time outdoor adventure traveler, but it helps to condition yourself to expect the worst. This also applies to choosing tents, because it helps to get one that is designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you may face. For example, you will need a fairly standard-type tent that will do just well in areas where the weather patterns are unpredictable. For true-blue backpackers and mountaineers, it would be best to carry more specialized tents that hold off extreme cold and handle semi-gale force winds.

Sleeping Bags: Most sleeping bags sold today come in two basic shapes or formats which reflect their intended use. There are so-called mummy-shaped bags, which give the best warmth since these conform to the contours of the body. This type also helps to lessen the amount of heat that the body must generate to maintain a constant temperature. There are rectangular sleeping bags as well, which are considered to be less thermally efficient, but offer more room for tossing and turning. These rectangular sleeping bags are also quite heavier than the mummy bags, and usually are not equipped with down insulation.

Hiking Boots: Superb quality hiking boots are quite expensive stuff. However, buying these should be considered an investment; therefore proper care should be taken to ensure that these remain useful for longer periods. It's also good to know that lightweight hiking boots offer better traction and ease when going on small trips and light hikes. These boots are also flexible but offer less foot support. There are also hiking boots that can be individually-crafted to suit the shapes and contours of your foot. Although these may be a bit expensive, this should help to ensure the appropriate size for your feet. There are also waterproof hiking boots, which are suitable when hiking in wet or rainy conditions. Getting waterproof socks also helps in preventing blisters from forming in your feet.

There are other outdoor equipments that you will need to bring, depending on the type of adventure activity you're participating. Bringing the right type of equipment will help in making your trip a more enjoyable one, and allow you to savor the experience that the great outdoors offer. However, the most important thing to consider is your safety; therefore it helps to bring a first-aid kit with you. This vital life-saving kit will help you deal with different types of wounds, bruises, injuries or sudden illnesses, especially if you and your companions are miles away from the nearest medical facility. The kit should include items such as antiseptics, bandages, braces, medications, small scissors or knives, and other first-aid tools.

Jo is an author and publisher for 'Great Outdoors' (www.greatoutdoorsdirect.co.uk), a major dealer of the most excellent camping and outdoor gears in UK. You interact directly with the local people, take part in a cultural celebration, visit interesting religious sites and become a part of the community.

The experience will be very much different from domestic hiking trips.

Guided Hiking Tour

A guided hiking tour can range from a simple trip to a huge expedition. Some will provide porters that show the way and carry your camping gear.

The number of porters is depends on availability and the size of the group.

These organized treks can be arranged when you're at home or when you arrive.

Deciding to use the porters may cost a little bit extra but it will help a lot in supporting the local economy and encourage locals to preserve the surrounding natural beauty.

Unguided Hiking

The best thing about the guided tour is that if you have a porter you have to carry your own backpack. The most you'll carry will probably be no more than what your fanny pack can hold.

Still a lot of hikers prefer to hike independently in developing countries. You have to carry your own pack but the experience is so much better at least for most people, me included.

Many guidebooks are available for who prefer the unguided trek. It will include details on backpacking hostels, landmarks, places to visit, lodges, shops for camping supplies and some will include a little bit of history.

Hiking with Pack Animals

Donkeys, mules, horses, goats and dogs can be used to carry supplies. Hiking with pack animals require more planning and scheduling than normal group hiking but you can carry more camping equipment and food.

You might also want to hire a guide and animal handlers just to be safe.

Safety and Security

Camping gear is expensive. In some countries the cost of your hiking gear alone can feed a family for a year.

This huge difference in wealth makes hikers targets for thieves. Be safe and never show any expensive electronic equipment or large sums of cash.

You can take further precautions with hiking accessories such as cable-reinforced money belts, padlocks, secret compartments and steel nets to encase your backpack.

Remember that these are just secondary precautions, when it comes to keeping yourself safe it involves a little bit of common sense.

Take special care when traveling in a politically unstable area. A guide is a must if you want to avoid trouble spots.

Local Customs

An uniformed visitor may frequently give offense for not respecting the array of cultural and religious taboos.

Many of these customs may be difficult to understand. That's why investing in a good guidebook can make for a pleasant stay.

Food

When hiking in a developing country, you get the chance to try authentic local food much better than restaurants for tourists.

One should be careful than one man's food may also be another's poison. People with food allergies or restricted diets may find that their choices are limited.

It's always a good idea to pack along your camping food.

Sanitation

Poor standards of sanitation doesn't stop hikers from staying in lodgings rather than hotels.

However, there are many places where the water supply is not clean and the food not safe to eat.

If you are concerned about hygiene and sanitation, travel with a tour company that will help you find the best available local amenities.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Hiking-and-Camping-in-Developing-Countries/760066
Outdoor adventure

Top 5 Places In The World To Camp In Luxury

Gone are the days when camping meant roughing it. Maybe it is the sight of the water flowing over the edge or maybe it is the raw power that the water represents. The ancient Amerindians believed that with so much power the waterfalls were gods. Or maybe it is just that we are drawn to waterfalls because of the refreshing coolness that fills the air around the waterfall. Whatever it is, there is an attraction to waterfalls and the Caribbean has its fair share of waterfalls, from the awe inspiring power of Kaieteur Falls in Guyana to small cascades where you simply slip under the flow and feel the water pummel your shoulders and back.

Grenada´s mountainous nature and pristine environment gives rise to several waterfalls. Wherever you stay in Grenada, there is a waterfall close by. Concorde Falls is a waterfall that is reasonably close to Grenada´s capital, St Georges, being approximately 45 minutes driving time. The road to that part of the island is good and goes through areas with luxuriant green foliage clothing the hills. The Falls are easy to find as there is a large sign on the main road pointing to the waterfall. From the Main Road to the waterfall is approximately 3 kilometers and takes about 5 minutes to drive. This waterfall is in the mountains and as you stand on the road above looking down at the falls, there are mountain peaks towering above you. Around the waterfall tropical growth springs from the soil in abundance, with towering stands of bamboo, nutmeg trees climb the hills and in between mangoes, pomerac, grapefruit, avocado and banana dot the hillsides. For the truly adventurous there is a larger waterfall that is approximately 45 minutes hiking beyond the first waterfall. Known as Au Coin, this waterfall is bigger and taller with a pool for swimming. A third waterfall in the Concorde valley is Fontainbleu which cascades down a 65 foot cliff into a crystal clear pool and is approximately 2 hours hiking up the mountain.

Dominica is a true Caribbean nature island with an unspoilt natural landscape and a variety of waterfalls. One of popular waterfalls in Dominica is called the Three Rivers Waterfall and it is reached after a half-hour walk from 3 Rivers. The trail is both beautiful and extremely easy, and involves a well made track and a little river walking. You can bathe under this 100-foot high cold shower and hear the sound of your screams echoing all around. The water drops close to a massive tree which forms a junction between three rivers. Advanced hikers will enjoy the seven (7) hour hike to Boli Falls. The trail begins in the beautiful village of Casgory, near La Plaine and passes through unspoilt rainforest to arrive at 3 stunning waterfalls and some gorgeous natural pools. There is even a local legend that a mermaid exists in the pools.

St Lucia seems to have waterfalls everywhere you go. Not only does St Lucia have waterfalls but it has variety in its waterfalls from cold water to warm water to even hot water waterfalls. The most visited waterfall in St Lucia is Diamond Waterfall in the town of Soufriere. Here in the midst of a lush well maintained tropical garden bursting with brilliant flowers, the water falls from a height of 45 feet laden with minerals from underground sulphur springs. While bathing under the falls is not allowed, adjacent to the falls are mineral baths where it is said that bathing removes the aches and pains of age and makes you young again. For those who want to combine their waterfall viewing with more rugged hiking then EnBas Saut Waterfall will fill your passion. Getting to these waterfalls requires a two hour hike along a 4 kilometer trail through Rainforest and Cloud Forest. At the base of the falls you are greeted by the sight of two cascading falls and pools.

Trinidad is another Caribbean island that has numerous waterfalls. One of the waterfalls that people often enquire about is Maracas Waterfall. Part of the curiosity about these falls is the mistaken belief that the waterfall is at Maracas Beach. The Maracas Waterfall, which is a little over 91.5m. in height, is situated in cool, beautiful surroundings in the Maracas St Joseph valley. From the car park on Waterfall Road it is 2.4km. to the waterfall. The hike to the waterfall is an uphill walk along a very wide track lined on both sides by Balata trees. After approximately 15 minutes, there is a fork in the track and the track on the right leads to a cascade consisting of three tiers of mini waterfalls with two large pools that are suitable for swimming. A further 20 minutes of walking leads to the main waterfall. There is no pool for bathing at the base of this waterfall. A very popular waterfall in Trinidad for weekend hikers is known as Rio Seco. This trail winds through pathways lined by stately Mora trees along the North Eastern coast of the island to a waterfall and deep, emerald green pool. In fact, this is one of the number one questions parents ask the camp director when signing up for camp.

The answer depends on several things, including the type of camp you are sending your child to, any special needs or requirements your child may have, and any rules or regulations the camp goes by or recommends.

In general, if your child is attending day camp (where he or she will attend camp during the day but return home each afternoon), your "packing list" will be much less involved than if your child is attending resident (overnight or sleepaway) camp where they may be living for several weeks at a time.

If your child is going to day camp, then in general, your son or daughter may need a backpack filled with basic supplies such as a swimsuit, towel, lunch and a change of clothes.

But for a resident camp experience, your camper's packing list will be much more involved. They may require suitcases or duffel bags, pillows, toiletries and other living supplies.

What if your child has special medical requirements? For example, many kids take medicine while they're at camp. So if this pertains to your child, be sure to alert the camp director beforehand and send any medications to camp with your child in the original prescription container with a written note describing how and when the medication should be administered along with any other important instructions.

When your child goes to camp, there is a lot to think about and remember. Knowing what to send with your child is an important part of the camp experience. Any camp you choose should provide you with a written checklist of what to wear and bring so you don't forget anything.

Keep the above information in mind and you'll be fine!

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/What-to-Wear-and-Bring-to-Camp/755394
Vacation tips

What Is A Possibles Pouch?

In the early 1800's this Possibles Pouch was just a flat rectangular bag with a flap which had to be carried under the arm or packed into the saddle bag. As things progressed Mountain Men or Fur Trappers fitted a strap so the bag could be carried over the shoulder. These bags would contain pipe tobacco, medicine and other essential items that these men may need to use on their outings into the wilds.

Various Possibles Pouches were created by the Native Indian Women for carrying a variety of items. These Possibles Pouches would come in several sizes and would be decorated in beads with a strap.

The Possibles Pouch has evolved into something which is quite different from the early days because now they come fitted with belt loops and are carried on the belt. Primarily these have been adopted by the Bushcraft Fraternity because of the need and requirement to carry extra items to aid their survival in the wilds.

Some of the items carried in the Possibles Pouch are First Aid Kit, Fire Making Kit, Cutting Tools and Cordage.

This list is endless and each person have their own specific items that they would carry in these Possibles Pouches. Normally these bags are constructed in leather either by Wet Forming or using the the Box Wall Construction method and are stitched together with Linen Thread for the more authentic look.

The use of Linen Thread does have it's drawbacks as the stitching will rot in time especially if the Possibles Pouch constantly gets wet. Modern threads such as Tiger Thread are more widely used because this is a man made fibre and will not rot over time. Another material to use is Artificial Sinew which is made up of several strands and these are split down to be used to stitch the Possibles Pouch together and again this does not rot.

Closures for the Possibles Pouch again vary from toggles made from Antler or Buffalo Horn to Brass Sam Brown Studs through to Buckles or a simple leather Thong which passes through holes to keep the flap closed and the item inside dry.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/What-Is-A-Possibles-Pouch-/754530
Air Travel Online

Benefits of Aloha Vacations

Hawaii is one of the most beautiful states of the United States America in the central Pacific Ocean comprising the Hawaiian Islands. The Hawaiian Islands historically known as the Sandwich Islands were included in the U.S. territory in 1900.Tourists to this place can stay at any of the innumerable hotels there but those with budget restrictions can opt for Hawaii apartment rentals.

These apartment rentals have several advantages over hotel rooms. Short-term apartment rentals are meant especially to cater to travelers. These apartments are fully furnished and will give you a certain amount of independence, especially in cooking your favorite meals, which is not possible in hotel rooms.

Renting an apartment in Hawaii allows you the comfort of a private residence. There is no checking in with the front desk, no one telling you that you can't have guests in your apartment, and no hawkers standing outside our apartment trying to sell souvenirs like they do in front of hotels. If you cook, you have a full kitchen and are able to buy your own food at a local market instead of paying high hotel prices for meals.

Hawaii is considered one of the best vacation destinations in the world. Tourists coming here must be not willing to settle for anything less than the best when it comes to accommodation. The best art of Hawaiian vacation rentals is that they are everywhere you will want to be during your Hawaiian vacation. These are:

1) Privacy is the biggest benefit that you get at Hawaii vacation rentals. You will defiantly enjoy the complete privacy.

2) During your stay in these vacation rentals you will sure get homely comforts. These are ideal places to stay if you are planning a vacation with your family. Every member of family will get enough room to move around. This is sharp contrast to hotel rooms where you feel cramped for space.

Finally, there are many other advantages also of staying at Hawaii vacation rentals during your holiday trip. Cruises offer all the amenities of home, and many more. The all inclusive nature of a cruise vacation makes it easy to relax and put the thought of cold weather and work behind you.

Choosing a destination to escape those cold weather blues can be a fun challenge. There are many options for warm weather cruising. Some may choose the more exotic routes such as the Panama Canal, Australia and New Zealand, or even the Nile River. Others may choose the allure of the Mediterranean and the French Riviera. Still some prefer the South Pacific or the Mexican Riviera.

All of those destinations have a lot to offer, but the five destinations below are the top five for the warm weather seeker.

Multi-Destination Caribbean Cruise

This is by far one of the most popular cruise choices. The Islands of the Caribbean have so much to offer. They are as diverse as they are similar. The sandy beaches, blue waters, and lush jungles entice many visitors to jump ship at each port and explore the many offerings.

These cruises range from a 3 day excursion to 10 day island-hopping expeditions. Some cruises focus on only a couple of islands, while others make a swing around the entire area. On board the ship you can enjoy the entertainment and meals, while resting up for the day trips to the islands. Scuba, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, or simply exploring villages and mountain trails, are all examples of some of the adventures that await you on the islands.

While it is impossible to experience all the Caribbean has to offer in one multi-destination cruise, it does allow the traveler the opportunity to sample a little of each culture. This smorgasbord of experiences opens new opportunities for future vacation planning.

Barbados

While we are still in the Caribbean, Barbados is a superb destination. With nearly constant 80 degree temperatures, soft sand beaches, cool blue waters, and lush vegetation, this is a vacationer's paradise; a relaxing cruise to the island makes it even more enjoyable.

Barbados offers a rich cultural history coupled with many modern amenities. Friendly, laid back people also make this a choice destination. Throw in some great water recreation, posh resorts, and a hopping nightlife and Barbados becomes an even better choice.

Hawaii

Although not well known as a cruise destination, Hawaii has always been a warm weather destination for travelers. The problem for most vacationers was choosing which island to spend their vacation on. A cruise through the islands eliminates that choice. You get to experience them all.

You could choose a cruise that started in Honolulu and then hop to each island for a great cultural and entertaining vacation. The time aboard ship could be used to rest up between visits to the islands. This is a great way to experience all the islands have to offer in a short amount of time.

For those who enjoy the on-ship part of the cruise the best, there are cruises that depart Mexico or British Columbia and float across the pacific for a very relaxing trip. These are much longer excursions. The onboard time can be spent enjoying all the amenities the ship has to offer before embarking on the many island adventures.

Aruba

Another Caribbean destination, Aruba, is well known for its nightlife. Aruba has often been called the Caribbean's answer to Las Vegas, with its many lavish casinos and upscale resorts. This island relies on tourism to keep it going, with over fifty percent of its gross national product coming from tourism. That explains why the people are so open and friendly.

The trade winds help keep the temperatures down from the extremes, but the arid, dry climate promises plenty of beach weather. Days spent on the beach and in the warm waters, coupled with nights spent enjoying the resorts and casinos equals fun and relaxation. A low crime rate just adds to the air of relaxation.

U.S. Virgin Islands

This popular string of islands is a hotspot for cruise ship tourism. St. Thomas is the port of choice for shoppers. There are many other attractions and beautiful beaches, as well. Many cruise ships focus their trip on St. Thomas alone, and the passengers are not disappointed. However, the other islands cannot be ignored.

St. John is not a common cruise ship destination, but it is an easy ferry trip from St. Thomas. St. John offers a great look at the nature and history of the islands. And, if it is history you are looking for St. Croix is the destination of choice. It is rich in history with many historical attractions. And Water Island, although not on the cruise ship docket, is a short ferry ride from St. Thomas and offers a relaxing taste of paradise. With less than 200 residents it is an unspoiled gem in the chain of islands.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Top-Five-Cruise-Destinations-to-Escape-the-Cold-Winter-Weather/738528
Air Travel

The English Lake District - A Walkers Guide to Helvellyn

One of the more popular goals for the walker in the English Lake District is the windblown summit of Helvellyn, England's third highest peak. Situated in the eastern side of Lakeland between Thirlmere and Ullswater, the mountain has easy access with several wide paths leading to the summit. Here I shall outline the main routes of ascent and their relative merits.

From the A 591 about three quarters of a mile north of Grasmere an easy but steep path climbs grassy slopes to Grisedale Hause the pass leading over to Patterdale and Ullswater. Just beyond the summit of the pass, the track skirts around the right side of Grisedale Tarn before another path branches off to the left. The main path continues to Patterdale - a pleasant walk in itself but the left branch climbs a steep and loose slope in a series of zig zags to the summit of Dollywaggon Pike - yes the Lake District is full of curious names. Beyond Dollywaggon Pike the route heads northwards along a wide ridge which appears more like a plateau with an escarpment of cliffs falling down to the east. This is wonderful walking country as the way progresses over Nethermost Pike before the final easy rise to Helvellyn with its stone shelter at 3118 feet or 950 metres.

If we go about 3 miles further along the A 591 towards Keswick, another popular route leaves from Wythburn Church by Thirlmere - there is a car park on the right (as you head north). The Wythburn route is shorter and more direct but it is steep throughout most of its early stages. The path is good and joins the Grasmere route just before the summit. At under 5 miles return, the wythburn route is the shortest way to the summit of Helvellyn.

From the eastern side of the mountain the approaches are more interesting with views of the crags and rocky ridges that make up this aspect. From the beautiful village of Glenridding by the shores of Ullswater, a single track road leads up a valley to the Youth Hostel and site of an old mine - the road is for access only and you should park in the village. From the mine buildings the track climbs up out of the trees to a wide valley which it follows for perhaps just over a mile where a path heads up the slopes to the right. This path climbs steadily to the ridge between the summits of Raise and White Side.

The ridge is now followed in a more or less southerly direction over the broad grassy top of White Side and steeply up to the minor summit of Helvellyn Lower Man - itself a great viewpoint for the valley below. From here it is a short walk to Helvellyn's main summit. This route is an easy and very pleasant outing with some spectacular views and is a good choice if you would rather avoid the crowds that you can encounter on some of the more popular routes.

I have left the best until last here and the popularity of this next route is the only thing that is wrong with it. Striding Edge is a name that most walkers visiting the Lake District will be familiar with. Those who plan to it will think of the name with apprehension and those that have done it - with fondness.

From Patterdale just under a mile south of Glenridding another single track road leads off to the start of the path over Grisedale Hause mentioned in the first route. There is parking about half a mile along this road where a path leaves the route to Grasmere and climbs the steep slopes of Birkhouse Moor to the north of Grisedale. There are views up the fabulous Grisedale valley to the crags of Nethermost Pike at its head and the precipitous St Sunday Crag opposite while you ascend the path to the start of Striding Edge itself.

Striding Edge is the ridge to the south of Red Tarn which is visible after the initial ascent but the path is clear and there will usually be people to follow! Crossing the Edge is an exhilarating walk along a rock ridge with Grisedale below on the left and Red Tarn on the right. While there are a few exposed sections it is not difficult and you are able to walk rather than scramble your way along most of it. At the end where the route leaves the ridge and climbs up to Helvellyn there is a short scramble up about 20 feet of easy rock and then you're up.

The ridge to the north side of Red Tarn linking Helvellyn with the shapely peak of Catstycam is called Swirral Edge and makes a good route of descent taking you back to the Start of Striding Edge. The slightly easier Swirral Edge also makes a good route of ascent but it is easier to go up via Striding Edge rather than to descend it if you're doing a circular. This route should be avoided if it is icy or very windy but is safe in the mist - there's no problem route finding and you can't see the drops if it's foggy!

So there's a choice of a few ways up Helvellyn - generally the paths from the Ullswater side offer pleasanter hikes but whichever route you use, have a good day in the hills.

Please Rate this Article

Source: http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/The-English-Lake-District---A-Walkers-Guide-to-Helvellyn/746020
Travel Destinations
